The Human Brain

To control your body and
house your mind.


The Voice Box

To create sounds and prevent
food from entering your
airways.


Lungs
To deliver oxygen to and
remove carbon dioxide
from your blood.


Heart
The heart is a muscular organ,


responsible for pumping blood
through the blood vessels by
repeated, rhythmic contractions.


Liver
To get rid of toxins, to
regulate your blood sugar
levels and to produce bile.


Spleen
Cleaning your blood, destroying old red blood cells and fighting
infection.


Stomach
Storing food, breaking
food down and mixing it
with juices secreted by
your stomach lining.


Kidneys

To make urine from waste
products and excess water
found in your blood.



Gallbladder
To store and concentrate bile produced in
your liver.
Bile is a greenish-yellow, slightly acidic fluid
that is made in your liver. You produce about
one litre of it a day.


Pancreas
Secreting digestive enzymes and hormones that
control blood sugar levels. When you eat, your
pancreas releases digestive juices . This fluid is
rich in enzymes that break down fats, proteins
and carbohydrates.


Large Intestine

To convert food waste
products into faeces.


Small Intestine
A five metre long narrow tube
that hangs in sausage-like coils.

Chemical digestion of food and
absorption of nutrients into
your blood.



Skin
Flat, pliable and tough,
between 0.5 and 4mm thick.
To protect your body from
damage, infection and
drying out.


Appendix
A narrow, muscular, wormlike pouch, usually around
nine centimetres long.
Its function is unknown.


Bladder
Urine, made in your kidneys, is
transported to your bladder via two
narrow tubes. As your bladder fills up
with urine it stretches. It can hold
about 1 pint of fluid.
