Everyday Situations 2
in each situation you have two things to do

Example:
A friend of yours has a headache. Say you’re sorry (1) and give
him/her some advice (2).
Possible answer: Oh you poor thing! (1) Why don’t you take an
aspirin and lie down. (2)


Situation:
You plan to meet a good friend at a hotel in London.
When you arrive at the hotel, explain the situation at
reception and ask if your friend has checked in yet.

Possible answer:
Excuse me, I’m supposed to be meeting a friend here, could
you tell me if he/she has checked in yet. His/Her name is
…………..


Situation:
At a party you think you know one of the other guests, but
you are not sure.
Introduce yourself to the guest and explain the situation.

Possible answer:
Hello, my name’s ……………., haven’t we met somewhere
before?



Situation:
You are at a party when a friend offers to take you home.
Politely refuse his/her offer and tell him/her how you are
getting home.

Possible answer:
Thank you, that’s very kind of you, but I’ve already ordered a
taxi/my car is just outside,


Situation:
Just as you are leaving a restaurant, someone tells you that
you’ve taken the wrong coat.
Apologise and explain your mistake.

Possible answer:
Oh, I’m terribly sorry, I didn’t realize, it’s the same colour as
mine.


Situation:
You are staying with some English friends and they ask you
what you would like for breakfast.
Say what you would like and tell them what you usually have
at home.

Possible answer:
Could I have a real English breakfast, I’ve heard so much
about it?/Just toast and coffee please. At home I usually have
………



Situation:
A friend asks you to look after his/her cat while he/she is on
holiday.
Say you can’t and tell him/her why.

Possible answer:
Oh, I’m terribly sorry, I can’t because I’m allergic to cats/I’m
going away at the same time.


Situation:
You’re swimming in the sea with an English friend who wants
and ewx
to swim out farther.
Say you don’t want to and explain why.

Possible answer:
I’d rather not because I’m not such a good swimmer as
you/I’m tired.


Situation:
An English friend uses a word you don’t understand.
Tell him and ask him to explain.

Possible answer:
Sorry, what did you say? What does that mean?



Situation:
You have missed the last bus home and haven’t got enough
money on you for a taxi.
Explain the situation to the friend with you and ask for help.

Possible answer:
Oh dear! I’ve missed my last bus home, could you lend me
some money for a taxi. I’ll pay you back tomorrow.


Situation:
You’ve taken a taxi to the station and the taxi-driver asks you
for 30€, but you know it should only be about 20€.
Complain and threaten not to pay.

Possible answer:
What! 30€ that’s impossible! I took the taxi last week for
about the same distance and it was only 20€. I think you’d
better check because I’m not paying that!


Situation:
You have an unexpected guest at your home but you have
very little food in the house.
Suggest going out to eat and explain why.

Possible answer:
I can’t even offer you a meal, I’ve got nothing in, why don’t
we go out to eat/what about going out to eat/shall we go out

to eat?


Situation:
After having dinner in a restaurant you discover that your
coat is missing.
Explain the situation to the manager of the restaurant and
describe your coat.

Possible answer:
Excuse me, I can’t find my coat anywhere, someone must
have taken it. Could you let me know if anyone hands it in?
It’s a black leather jacket with a fur collar.


Situation:
Some friends of yours are moving to another town next
week.
Wish them well and promise to visit them soon.

Possible answer:
I hope the move goes well and that you will be happy in your
new home. I’ll come and visit you as soon as you are settled.


Situation:
In a hotel the heating in your room is not working properly,
so you decide to ring reception.
Explain the situation and say what you want.


Possible answer:
Excuse me, my heating isn’t working. Could you send
someone up to see to it, please?


Situation:
A friend asks you to lend him a book, but you know that he
often forgets to return things.
Refuse in a friendly way and give a reason.

Possible answer:
I’m terribly sorry I can’t, because I’ve already promised to
lend it to my sister.


Situation:
You are in a restaurant. Someone is leaving and taking a
coat. You think it’s your coat, but you’re not sure.
What do you say?

Possible answer:
Excuse me, but I think that’s my coat you’re taking. Could
you just check?


Situation:
You are trying to speak on the phone but the people in the
room are speaking so loudly that you can’t undestand.
What do you say to the people in the room?


Possible answer:
Excuse me, I can’t hear, would you mind speaking more
quietly/could you not speak so loudly?


Situation:
You’re at a party. It’s late, so you decide to go home. The
person who is giving the party wants you to stay.
What do you say?

Possible answer:
I’m sorry I can’t. I have to be up early tomorrow morning, but
it’s been lovely and thanks for inviting me.


Situation:
You’re having dinner with English friends at their home. You
like the food very much, but can’t eat any more. Your friends
offer you some more food.
What do you say?

Possible answer:
No thank you. It was delicious but I’m full up!


Situation:
You get on a train and want to be sure it’s the right one for
London.
Ask another passenger.


Possible answer:
Excuse me, is this the right train for London?/does this train
go to London?


Situation:
You’re looking after some children.
Ask them to make the room tidy before their mother gets
back.

Possible answer:
Come on children, put all your things away and tidy up before
mum gets home.


Situation:
A friend asks you why you want to see a certain film.
Say why?

Possible answer:
Well, I’ve heard it’s good/it’s had good write-ups and anyway I
love/I’m a great fan of ………. (the name of an actor or
actress)


Situation:
A friend of yours is ill.
Say you’re sorry and offer to help.

Possible answer:

Oh, you poor thing! Is there anything I can do for you?


Situation:
You are at a party and someone offers you an alcoholic drink.
Refuse politely and say why.

Possible answer:
No, thank you. I’m driving so I’ll stick to fruit juice this
evening/I never drink alcohol.
