The 3rd conditionalIf I had won the lottery last week, I
would have bought a lovely new sports
car!


The 3rd conditional
• If I had won the lottery last week, I would have



bought a lovely new sports car!
Am I talking about the past, present or future
here?
I am talking about an event in the past that did
not happen. We use the 3rd conditional to talk
about what we would have done if something
had happened in the past.

• Other examples• If I had worked harder at school I would

have passed the exams.
• If I had finished my homework on time I
would have been able to go out.


The 3rd conditional
• So how do we form the 3rd conditional?
• If he had left on time, he would have arrived



before the film started.
• We have to use the verb in the past perfect.
• If I had worked harder at school I would have
passed the exams.


Activity
• You are going to watch a short video.
• Before you watch the video, predict why the




following will happen using the 3rd conditional.
If he_______________, he would not have got
his head stuck in the turkey!
Example- If he had not put a spoon inside it, he
would not have got his head stuck in the turkey!

What a bad idea!
• If he had not lost his watch, he would not have



got his head stuck up the turkey!
Look at the following pictures and write a
sentence using the 3rd conditional.

The first one has been done for you.


• If they had built the snowman better, his
head would not have fallen off!






Speaking activity
• Pick one of the cards and turn it in to a 3rd

conditional sentence.
• Example- won the lottery
• If I had won the lottery last week, I would
have booked a flight to Florida!
