The Global Food Crisis
 The

sad reality today is that although
enough food is produced to feed
everyone on the planet with a healthy
diet – each and every day almost
25,000 people (mostly children) die

of starvation or malnutrition-related
illnesses which are preventable.

 THAT

IS 10 TIMES THE NUMBER
OF PEOPLE KILLED DURING THE
9/11 ATTACKS IN THE US…

 EVERY

DAY.

Developing Country Market

Developed Country Market

Note!

Have vs. Have Not

DID YOU KNOW…
In

the United States, an

estimated 65 percent of adults
are overweight or obese,
leading to an annual loss of
300,000 lives and to at least
$117 billion in health care
costs in 1999.

DID YOU KNOW?

At many fast-food restaurants,
one single meal gives a
disproportionate share
(sometimes more than 100%) of
the recommended daily intake of
fat, cholesterol, salt, and sugar.

DID YOU KNOW…
A

recent study showed that
children who drink sodas and
other sugar-sweetened drinks
are more often obese and that
this risk increases another
60% with each additional
beverage consumed.

DID YOU KNOW…
 McDonald's,

which operates 30,000
restaurants in 119 countries and
serves 46 million customers each day,
earned $15.4 billion in revenues in
2002. On opening day in Kuwait City,
the line for the McDonald's drive-thru
was more than 10 kilometers long.

DID YOU KNOW…
 India's

fast-food industry is
growing by 40 percent a year and
is expected to generate over a
billion dollars in sales by 2005.
Meanwhile, a quarter of India's
population remains undernourished—a number virtually
unchanged over the past decade.

DID YOU KNOW…
China

is now home to 800
KFCs and 100 Pizza Huts.

Only in Canada?
The Canadian government has earmarked
$1.5 billion for biofuel producers in an
effort to increase biofuel consumption to
5% of total fuel used by 2010!
 Oh, by the way, Canada’s annual
international food aid is a mere $230
million, about 15% of what they’re giving
the big oil companies!

Yes, in Canada…
 HungerCount

(2006) reports that
food bank use is at a record high,
with 753, 458 Canadians relying
on food banks in a one month
period. Of these food bank
users, 41% are children.

The Choice is Clear!

Do we continue to over consume?

Or help to feed the hungry…?
