Lesson 1: READING
I. Objectives
1. Educational Aims: music makes humans different from the other animals and
makes our life more beautiful and diverse
2. Knowledge:
a. General Knowledge: helps Ss recognize the importance of music in our life and the
kinds of music
b. Language: vocabulary about music field: to express: feeling, anger, to convey,
occasion, to set, sense, emotion, joyfulness, atmosphere, to imagine
3. Skills:
- Vocabulary comprehension: gap-fill
- Passage comprehension

III. Teaching Aids: extra boards, pictures, handouts, textbooks

1. Warm up
- T passes out handouts, whose content is the
lyric of a song, with some dropping words to
each of the student
- T asks Ss to work individually to choose from a


word box a suitable word to fill in each blank
- T has Ss listen to the song and check out the
answers
- T asks Ss to share the answers to each other
- T checks the answers. The student who get all
the right answers will get a ‘+’ mark
2. Pre-reading
Instruction: Who can tell me what topic we are going
to learn in Unit 12? That is “music”.
- T asks Ss to give the equivalents of the types of
music.
Instruction: Look at the pictures in the book. What
kinds of music are they playing?
- T asks Ss to work in pairs to match each type of
music in column A with its description in
column B
- T asks some Ss to give the answers
- T checks the answers and write down on the
board
Instruction: Can you tell me some more kinds of
- Use the given words to fill in the
blanks
- Listen to the song and check out their
answers
- Share the answers
- Give the equivalents of the types of

3. While reading
Instruction: You are going to read a passage about
music. While you are reading, do the tasks in the book.
Task 1.
- T asks Ss to read the sentences in task 1 and tell

what the part of speech of each blank is. T
writes the answers on the board
Instruction: Now class, work in pairs, read the
passage in the book quickly, then complete the
sentences in task 1 with the words or phrases in the
box. You should stop at the lines that contain these
words to guess their meanings.
- T goes around for help if necessary.
- T calls on some Ss to answer. Asks them why
they choose the word.
Task 2:
Instruction: You are to quickly read the passage
again and answer the questions in the book.
- some strategies to do the task:
• read through the question quickly
• underline the key words
• find the position of the key words in the
passage
• read carefully to find the answer
- T asks Ss to work in pairs to do the task
- T calls on some Ss to write their answer on the
board
- T checks the answers, and ask them how they
find the answer
- Take notes
- Read sentences
- Identify the part of speech of each
blank
- Work in pairs and read the passage

- T asks Ss to draw a nine-square box and use the
vocabulary on the board to fill in the squares
- Explain the game: I will read the words one by
one. Who get three words in a row is the
winner
