Both/ both of, neither/neither of,
either/either of
1. Dùng both, neither & either khi ta nói về hai sự việc. Có thể dùng các từ này với Danh
từ.
- Both restaurants are very good. ( Cả hai khách sạn đó đều tốt).
- Neither restaurant is expensive. ( Chẳng cái nhà hàng nào trong 2 cái đắt tiền cả)
- We can go either restaurant. I don't mind. (= Chúng ta có thể đến cái nào trong hai
cái cũng đợc) (either= cái này hay cái kia cũng đợc, không thành vấn đề).
2. Có thể dùng both/neither/either với of. Khi dùng với of nhất thiết phải dùng the/ these/
those/ my/ your/ his/ her...
- Both of these restaurants are very good.
- Neither of the restaurants we went to was/were expensive.
- We can go to either of those restaurants. I don't mind.
* Với both ta có thể bỏ of. Vì vậy thay vì nói: Both of my parents are kind ta có thể
nói: Both my parents are kind.
3. Sau both of/ neither of/ either of ta có thể dùng us/ you/ them:
- Can either of them/you speak English? (Có ai trong số họ/ các bạn có thể nói.....)
- I wanted Tom and Ann to come but neither of them wanted to.
* Bạn bắt buộc phải để "both of" trớc us/you/them:
- Both of us were very tired. ( không nói both us).
4. Sau neither of... ta có thể dùng Verb số ít hoặc số nhiều.
- Neither of the children wants/ want to go to bed.
- Neither of us is/are married.
5. Ta có thể nói both...and..., neither...nor...,either....or:
- Both Jim and Marry were late.
- They were both tired and hungry.
- He said he could contact me but he neither wrote nor phoned.( ...chẳng viết cũng
chẳng gọi điện)
- Either you apologise or I'll never speak to you again. ( hoặc anh phải xin lỗi hoặc tôi
sẽ không bao giờ nói chuyện với anh nữa.)


6. Ta cũng có thể dùng both/ neither/ either một mình:
- Is he British or American?- Neither. He is Australian.
- I couldn't decide which one to choose. I like both.
7. Neither với nghĩa 'cũng vậy':
- Dùng trong trong trờng hợp khi trớc nó là một câu mang nghĩa phủ định.
- My father never read newspapers. 'Neither do I'.
- My mother can't remember his name. ' Neither can I'
- She didn't do the test well. 'Neither did I'

*Note: - trợ động từ (do/does/did) đợc đảo lên trớc S .
- Special verbs: to be, have; Modal verbs: Can, could, may, might,will shall,
would, should đảo lên trớc chủ ngữ.
- Neither = not ......either. (She liked neither of them=She didn't like either of them)
8. So với nghĩa 'cũng vậy':
- Dùng trong trong trờng hợp khi trớc nó là một câu mang nghĩa khẳng định.
- I am feeling tired. 'So am I'
- I passed the exam and so did Tom.

- Special verbs: to be, have; Modal verbs: Can, could, may, might,will shall,
would, should đảo lên trớc chủ ngữ.

Complete these sentences with both/neither/either sometimes you need 'of':
1. There are two windows in my room. It was very warm so I had ..............them open.
2. Do you want tea or coffee?..................... I don't mind.
3. It wasn't very good football match. .........................team played well.
4. A: Which of the two films did you prefer? The first one or or the second one?
B: Actually I didn't like........................them.
5. .......................these pullovers are very nice. I don'r know which one to buy.
6. ...................... my parents is English. My father is Polish and my mother is Italian.
7. Is today is 17th or 18th? ................................. It's the 20th.

8. Jim and I hadn't eaten for a long time, so ............................us were very hungry.

10. There are two ways to the city center. You can go along the footpart by river or you can
go along the main road. You can go.........................way.
11. A: Did you go to Scotland or Ireland for your holiday.
B: We went to .......................... A wwek in Scotland and a wwek in Ireland.
12. After the accident........cars stopped............drivers got out and started shouting at each
other. ....................................them were very aggresive.
