Read the following passage on transport, and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to rach of the question from 31 to 43.
Most journeys in Britain and the US are made by road. Some of these are made on public transport but most
are by private car.
In Britain many peaple rely on their cars for daily local activities, e.g. getting to work, doing the
shopping, and visting friends. People living in urban areas may use buses, trains or, in London, the
Underground, to get to city centres, mainly because traffic is often heavy and it is difficult to find anywhere
to park a car. Some places in the country may have a bus only two or three times a week so people living
there have no choice but to rely on their cars.
In the US large cities have good public transportation systems. The El railroad in Chicago and the
underground systems of New York, Boston, San Francisco and Washington, DC are heavily used. Elsewhere,
most Americans prefer to use their cars. Families often have two cars and, outside major cities, have to drive
fairly long distances to schools, offices, banks, ect. Many college and even high-school students have their
own cars.
Long-distance travel in Britain is also mainly by road, though railways link most towns and cities.
Most places are linked by motorways or other fast roads and many people prefer to drive at their own
convenience rather than use a train, even though they may get stuck in a traffic jam. Long – distance coach/
bus services are usually a cheaper alternative to trains, but they take longer and may be less comfortable.
Some long-distance travel, especially that undertaken for businees reasons, may be by air. There are regular
flights between regional airports, as well as to and from London. A lot of freight is also distributed by road,
though heavier items and raw materials often go by rail.
In the US much long-distance travel is by air. America has two main long-distance bus companies,
Greyhound and Trailways. Amtrak, the national network, provides rail services for passengers. Private

railway companies such as Union Pacific now carry only freight, though in fact over 70% of freight goes by
road.

The main problems associated with road transport in both Britain and the US are traffic congestion
and pollution. It is predicted that the number of cars on British roads will increase by a third within a few
years, making both these problems worse. The British govetnment would like more people to use public
transport, but so far they have had little success in persuading people to give up their cars or to share rides
with neighbours. Most people say that public transport is simply not good enough. Americans too have
resisted government requests to share cars because it is less convenient and restricts their freedom. Pestrol/
gasoline is relatively cheap in the US and outside the major cities pulblic transport is bad, so they see no
reason to ues their car less.

Write a paragraph about the Mid-Autumn festival in your country (about 150 words): 40 điểm
In Vietnam, the Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most popular family holidays. It is held on the 15th day
of the 8th lunar month. Vietnamese families plan their activities around their children on this special day. In
a Vietnamese folklore, parents were working so hard to prepare for the harvest that they left the children
playing by themselves. To make up for lost time, parents would use the Mid-Autumn festival as an
opportunity to show their love and appreciation for their children. Appropriately, the Mid-Autumn Festival is
also called the Children’s Festival. Parents buy lanterns for their children so that they can participate in a
candlelit lantern procession at dawn. Children also perform traditional Vietnamese dances for adults.
Vietnamese parents tell their children fairy tales and serve mooncakes and other special treats under the
silvery moon. Parents use this story to encourage their children to work hard so that they can become
whatever they want to be.

haven’t received any offers yet.

at school, but I’d love the book since I was 11. My grandmother used to say, I was just like Poly Finnegan

but sent my photograph to the director and persuaded him to meet me. I flew back and got the part.
The outdoor filming started a week into term, so I got permission from university to be away foe three
weeks. Once I was back at my university, I got up at 6.00 am to write the essays I’d missed. I didn’t tell my
university friends, but they found out and thought it was great.
It was an amazing experience- I am so lucky. After university, I definitely want to make acting my career.
I’m not from an acting family, though my grandfather was an opera singer. I’ve tried another TV parts but I
haven’t received any offers yet.
I don’t know how I managed it at all, because I had a full social life too. When filming finished , I hardly
knew what to do. I’ve since appeared in two college plays. Unfortunately, I haven’t been home much and
now my first year university is over, I’m off to Greece for summer with friends.’

In this modern era, many jobs are becoming very stressful for workers. Along
with that, their working hours also expands. In my opinion, high unemployment
rate and the urge to make more money are the two reasons for this trend.
Firstly, it is undeniable that the number of jobless people is increased. Therefore,
it would be much easier for a company to hire someone else instead of one who
cannot fulfill his tasks at work. This is why many employees have to stay at the
office and work overtime so as to meet the targets and not be made redundant.
Secondly, the prices of most every product and services are increasing day by
day. Hence, in order to make ends meet for himself, or even support his family
financially, one is under stress to work harder and perform better, which will
possibly result in promotion or higher salaries and bonuses.
In conclusion, many employees have to face stressful jobs and long working
hours due to a high level of unemployment and their financial needs.

Today, the Internet is one of the most powerful tools throughout the world. The Internet is a collection of
various services and resources. Almost all households contain the Internet; however, before people connect
to the Internet, they need to be aware of its dangers.
Many fear the Internet because of its dangers. They claim to not use the Internet because they are afraid of
the possible consequences or are simply not interested. Children using the Internet have become a big
concern. Most parents do not realize the dangers involved when their children log onto the Internet. When
children are online, they can easily be lured into something dangerous. When children talk to others online,
they do not realize they could actually be talking to a harmful person. As a result, there have been many

cases where children have been convinced to meet people they have talked with online. Some critics say that
parents are responsible for their own children on the Internet because there are available services to protect
children.
To keep children safe, parents and teachers must be aware of the dangers. They must actively guide and
guard their children online. Parents should talk to their children about what is online and what might happen
online.

The western alphabet, which is used in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Australia and New Zealand as well as
in other countries, originated in the middle east. The people who gave the world this alphabet were the
Phoneacians, a people who established colonies all over the Mediterranean, including Carthage in Africa and
Gades in Spain. In their alphabet, the letters were represented by little pictures which represented
sounds. The Phoneacian A was aelph, which means "bull". and it was made from a little picture of a bull's
head. The letter B was beth which meant "house", and showed the round-roofed buildings which you can
still see today in Syria.
The Phoneacians had contact with another nation of sailors, the Greeks, with whom they fought and traded.

The Greeks also started to use the Phoneacian alphabet. They changed the names so aelph and beth became
alpha and beta. The shapes of the letters are the same but they have been turned sideways. If you know any
Greek, you can try turning the letters around again, and see how they look. You will see that the curve on the
right of the Greek A becomes the horns of a little bull.
Of course, the first two letters of the alphabet give it its name. Over the years there have been changes. Latin
developed an alphabet with some different letters to the Greeks, and other letters have been added since. But
really westerners are using the same system of writing which has served them so well for thousands of years.

In this modern era, many jobs are becoming very stressful for workers. Along with that, their working hours
also expands. In my opinion, high unemployment rate and the urge to make more money are the two reasons
for this trend.
Firstly, it is undeniable that the number of jobless people is increased. Therefore, it would be much easier for
a company to hire someone else instead of one who cannot fulfill his tasks at work. This is why many
employees have to stay at the office and work overtime so as to meet the targets and not be made redundant.
Secondly, the prices of most every product and services are increasing day by day. Hence, in order to make
ends meet for himself, or even support his family financially, one is under stress to work harder and perform
better, which will possibly result in promotion or higher salaries and bonuses.
In conclusion, many employees have to face stressful jobs and long working hours due to a high level of

unemployment and their financial needs.

Parents should talk to their children about what is online and what might happen
online.
