The Ministry of Transport and authorities in Hanoi have agreed not adopting a plan
to rebuild a historic Long Bien Bridge, which has caused controversy among the public
in recent days. The bridge would only be upgraded to increase their traffic capacity.
The ministry had earlier proposed three plans. First option was to build a new bridge
exactly when the old one stands, keeping the central part with the railway track intact,
and removing other part of the bridge for preservation. The second was to build a new,
modern bridge with a similar design than the old one, and the third was to modern the
bridge while retaining parts of the central section and trusses. The 2,290-meter Long
Bien Bridge was built between 1899 and 1902 by the French, and opened to traffic in

1903. As the only bridge by the Red River that connected Hanoi to the highway leading
to the northern port city of Hai Phong, the bridge played a crucial role for many
important events in the country’s history.

VIII. Read the passage below and choose the correct answer by circling A, B, C or D. (5 pts)
As the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in
the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning to night, it is hard to slow down. But
relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.
Stress is natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad

thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give
purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill
health.
The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people
are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities.
Others lose heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties. When, exposed to stress, in whatever form, we
react both chemically and physically. In fact, we make a choice between “flight and fight” and in more
primitive days the choices made the difference between life and death. The crises we meet today are
unlikely to be so extreme. But however little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a
reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious
conditions as high blood pressure and heart diseases have established links with stress. Since we cannot
remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find ways to
deal with it.
1. People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselves because ______.
A. they do not know how to enjoy themselves
B. they do not believe that relaxation is important for health
C. they are traveling fast all the time
D. they are becoming busier with their work
2. According to the author, the most important character for a good manager is his ______.
A. not fearing stress
B. knowing the art of relaxation
C. high sense of responsibility
D. having control over performance
3. Which of the following statements is true?
A. We can find some ways to avoid stress.
B. Stress is always detrimental to people.
C. It is easy to change the habit of keeping oneself busy with work.
D. Different people can withstand different amount of stress.
4. The phrase “such a reaction” in the passage refers to ______.
A. making a choice between “flight and fight”

B. reaction to crises both chemically and physically
C. responding to crises quickly
D. losing heart at the signs of difficulties
5. In the last sentence of the passage, the phrase “do so” mostly means ______.
A. expose ourselves to stress
B. find ways to deal with stress
C. remove stress from our lives
D. establish links between diseases and stress.

Complete the text by deciding which part of the text (A-F) fits each gap (1-5). There is one extra
letter you do not need. (5 pts)
SEE YOU, SEAFOOD!
Fourteen researchers from Canada, Panama, Sweden, Britain and the US have spent four years
analyzing ocean ecosystem, fish population and fishing records. Their findings, which have just been
published, make frightening reading. They predict that by the year 2048 the world’s seafood will have
disappeared. (1) ______.
According to the study, the number of marine species has been declining much faster in recent
decades and if it continues to do so, there will soon be nothing for us to do to restore the diversity of
these ecosystems. We have already lost nearly 30% of all the known species. As we continue to
consume more and more from the ocean, many more species will become extinct. (2) ______ And
scientists believe that they will all be gone by 2048 unless something is done about it.

It is important that we find the causes before it’s too late. (3) ______ Because of them, the
number of ecologically important species is constantly decreasing and so is the ocean’s ability to
produce seafood and stay healthy. Some plans for reversing this trend are already being made.
In the future, we need to rely less on fishing in the wild and more on the so-called aquaculture.
Just like agriculture, which farms things on the land, aquaculture farms things in the water for the
purpose of mass consumption. And so fish, shrimps, oysters and other underwater species will simply
be grown in controlled waters. (4) ______
Why should we care? For many reasons. First of all, if the balance of an ecosystem is
threatened, then so is its working. For instance, the water is not cleaned and filtered by the creature. (5)
______ Moreover, thousands of people around the world rely on seafood as their basic food. And
finally, the world’s economy will be in trouble if everyone who works in the fishing industry loses their
jobs.
A. Also, in certain territories, fishing will have to be banned in order to let the populations of sea
creatures rebuild themselves.
B. We are currently fishing for almost 8,000 different species in order to put them on our tables.
C. For example, many of the Pacific Ocean countries have seafood and sea plants as their basic diet.
D. Scientists say overfishing (catching too much fish), pollution and other environmental factors are
responsible.
E. Their findings indicate that shrimps in sweet and sour sauce on the menu of your favorite takeaway
will become just a memory.
F. Furthermore, if some species are wiped out, the food chains they belonged to may be broken.
