LEVELS OF VOCABULARY
Most languages have several levels of vocabulary that may be used by the same speakers. In English, at least three have
been identified and described.

Standard usage includes those words and expressions understood, used, and accepted by a majority of the speakers of a
language in any situation regardless of the level of formality. As such, these words and expressions are well defined and listed
in standard dictionaries. Colloquialisms, on the other hand, are familiar words and idioms that are understood by almost all
speakers of a language and used in informal speech or writing, but not considered acceptable for more formal situations.
Almost all idiomatic expressions are colloquial language. Slang, however, refers to words and expressions understood by a
large number of speakers but not accepted as appropriate formal usage by the majority. Colloquial expressions and even
slang may be found in standard dictionaries but will be so identified. Both colloquial usage and slang are more common in
speech than in writing.
Colloquial speech often passes into standard speech. Some slang also passes into standard speech, but other slang
expressions enjoy momentary popularity followed by obscurity. In some cases, the majority never accepts certain slang
phrases but nevertheless retains them in their collective memories. Every generation seems to require its own set of words to
describe familiar objects and events.
It has been pointed out by a number of linguists that three cultural conditions are necessary for the creation of a large body
of slang expressions. First, the introduction and acceptance of new objects and situations in the society; second, a diverse
population with a large number of subgroups; third, association among the subgroups and the majority population. Finally, it
is worth noting that the terms "standard," "colloquial", and "slang" exist only as abstract labels for scholars who study
language. Only a tiny number of the speakers of any language will be aware that they are using colloquial or slang
expressions. Most speakers of English will, during appropriate situations, select and use all three types of expressions.

Many people like to eat pizza, but not everyone knows how to make it. Making the perfect pizza can be complicated, but
there are lots of ways for you to make a more basic version at home. When you make pizza, you must begin with the crust.

The crust can be hard to make. If you want to make the crust yourself, you will have to make dough using flour, water, and
yeast. You will have to knead the dough with your hands. If you do not have enough time to do this, you can use a prepared
crust that you buy from the store.
After you have chosen your crust, you must then add the sauce. Making your own sauce from scratch can take a long time.
You have to buy tomatoes, peel them, and then cook them with spices. If this sounds like too much work, you can also
purchase jarred sauce from the store. Many jarred sauces taste almost as good as the kind you make a home.
Now that you have your crust and your sauce, you need to add the cheese. Cheese comes from milk, which comes from
cows. Do you have a cow in your backyard? Do you know how to milk the cow? Do you know how to turn that milk into
cheese? If not, you might want to buy cheese from the grocery store instead of making it yourself.
When you have the crust, sauce, and cheese ready, you can add other toppings. Some people like to put meat on their pizza,
while other people like to add vegetables. Some people even like to add pineapple! The best part of making a pizza at home is
that you can customize it by adding your own favorite ingredients.

LEVELS OF VOCABULARY
Most languages have several levels of vocabulary that may be used by the same speakers. In English, at least three have
been identified and described.
Standard usage includes those words and expressions understood, used, and accepted by a majority of the speakers of a

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions.

(Adapted from />Question 36: The author's main purpose in writing this passage is to......

Question 38: Which of the following conclusions would work best at the end of this passage?
A. As you can see, cooking a pizza can be fun, but it can also be very expensive. But, as you can see, the best things are
worth paying for.
B. Although the crust, sauce, and toppings are all important ingredients in pizza, it is clear that the cheese is most
important. Therefore, be sure your cheese is homemade.

C. Once you have prepared the crust, sauce, cheese, and toppings, you are ready to bake your pizza. I think you will see
that making pizza at home can be a good alternative to purchasing it from the store.
D. It can be understood that making your pizza from scratch should be avoided at all costs. Use store bought ingredients
and save yourself a heap of trouble.

(Adapted from "Barron's Practice Exercises for the TOEFL, 6th edition")
Question 43: How is slang defined by the author?
A. Words and phrases accepted by the majority for formal usage

C. Words and phrases understood by a large number of speakers but not accepted as formal usage

Standard usage includes those words and expressions understood, used, and accepted by a majority of the speakers of a
language in any situation regardless of the level of formality.
