Basketball was invented by James Naismith in 1891. Naismith wanted to make a game that could
be played indoors. He remembered a game he used to play in his childhood. He developed that game to
make basketball.
Basketball is played on a basketball court. There is a backboard with an iron basket at each end of
the court. The basket is 10 feet high. The only other equipment is a basketball.
Naismith made 13 rules to guide the game. There are 5 people on each team .Basketball players
must dribble the ball. The goal of this game is to put the ball into the other team’s basket and to earn
points. The team with the most points wins the game.


Basketball is now very popular all over the world. America has very good teams in the National
Basketball Association (NBA).
