Main stress

I. TÂ rơi vào gốc từ, không rơi vào các tiền tố và hậu tố sau:
1. Tiền tố: UN-, IM-, IN-, IR-, DIS-, NON-(stop, smoker, violent), EN-(enlarge),
RE-, PRE OVER, A-(alive, alike), AB-(abnormal), SUR-(surmount), -impatient,
2. Hậu tố: - FUL, -LESS, -ABLE -IBLE, -AL, -OUS, -LY, -ER, -OR, (careful),
understandable, -AGE (manage), - LIKE (childlike), -ISH (blackish), -ING,
-IZE/ISE (economize), EN (sharpen), -MENT (movement), -NESS (happiness),
-SHIP (friendship), -HOOD (motherhood) tình mẹ
II - TÂ rơi vào các hậu tố sau:
1. -ADE: lemonade, blockade, brigade, persuade ... *decade
2. -EE: agree, refugee(ng tị nạn), absentee, trainee, , exaninee, referee (trọng tài)
addressee, employee (người làm)....
*committee (ủy ban), coffee
3. -EER: engineer, pioneer, mountaineer, volunteer, career...
4. -ESE: Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese ...
5. -OO: Shampoo, Kangaroo, bamboo, taboo (adj, n: cấm kỵ, kiêng kỵ)
6. -OON: afternoon, cartoon, balloon, typhoon, saloon, tycoon (trùm tư bản)
7. -AIN: (chỉ dùng cho V) contain, remain (còn lại), explain, retain (giữ, duy trì)
8. -SELF: myself, himself, yourself

10. -ETTE: cigarette, kichenette (bếp nhỏ), novelette (tiểu phẩm), etiquette (nghi lễ)
11. -IQUE: unique, technique, antique (cổ xưa), physique (cơ thể, vóc người)
12. -ESQUE: picturesque, grotesque (Kỳ quái), arabesque /ærə'besk/ (A -rập)
III - TÂ rơi vào ÂT (âm tiết) ngay trước các trường hợp sau:

1. PÂ+I+NÂ: politician, impatient, industrious (cần cù, siêng năng), industrial,
direction, experience, efficiency (hiệu quả) *television

IV - Các từ có các hậu tố sau nếu có 2 ÂT thì TÂ rơi vào hậu tố đó, nếu có >3 ÂT trở

lên thi TÂ rơi vào ÂT thứ 3 tính từ hậu tố: lo ‘cate , ‘e du cate

1. Từ có 2 ÂT, TÂ rơi vào:
a. ÂT sau nếu là V: begin, permit, consent, advise, frequent, present *content, instant
*study, carry, marry, envy, hurry

trường hợp: OW follow, narrow, borrow

ER offer, suffer, order, enter, answer * prefer, infer (suy ra),

b. ÂT đầu nếu là adj hoặc N: careful, accent (TÂ), absent, record, contant, distant
* machine, success, police, event, alone, awake, afloat, afraid, alive, mistake
2. Từ có 3 ÂM TIẾT trở lên, TÂ thường rơi vào ÂT thứ 3 tính từ cuối từ:

dificult, discipline (kỷ luật), telegraph, photograph, family, benefit, anniversary,
philosophy (triết học), compulsory (bắt buộc) * necessary, ceremony, adversary
3. Với từ ghép:
a. N ghép (Danh từ ghép): TÂ thường rơi vào thành tố đầu:
raincoat, airport, sunrise, teacup, dishwasher
b. ADJ ghép (Tính từ ghép)
1. adj + -ed: TÂ sau: bad-tempered, short-sighted
2. adv

3. N+adj: TÂ trước: homesick, airsick, praiseworthy (đáng khen ngợi)
* Một số từ có 2 ÂT vừa là N (rơi ÂT đầu) vừa là V thì (rơi TÂ sau)
