About 20,000 years ago, the last Ice Age was at its height. Outside the tropics, temperatures
were as much as 150C lower than today, and vast ice-sheets covered almost one-quarter of the earth’s
present land surface. In the northern hemisphere, they reached as far south as Chicago and London.
These severe conditions persisted for several thousand years, but at length the ice-sheets
began to retreat as average temperatures slowly rose. As the ice-sheets and glaciers melted, the sea

the species domesticated by the early farmers have remained the mainstay of agricultural economies to
this day - such as wheat and barley, rice and millet, corn, beans, and the potato.
