Giant Panda
The giant panda is the rarest member of the bear family and among the world’s most
threatened animals. It is universally loved, and has a special significance for WWF as it has been the
organization's logo since 1961, the year WWF (World Wildlife Fund) was founded.
Today, the giant panda's future remains uncertain. As China's economy continues rapidly
developing, this bamboo-eating member of the bear family faces a number of threats. Its forest habitat, in
the mountainous areas of southwest China, is increasingly fragmented by roads and railroads. Habitat loss
continues to occur outside of protected areas, while poaching remains an ever-present threat.
Great strides have been made in recent years to conserve the giant pandas. By 2005, the
Chinese government had established over 50 panda reserves, protecting more than 2.5 million acres over 45 percent of remaining giant panda habitat – protecting more than 60 percent of the population.
In 1984, the giant panda was transferred from Appendix III to Appendix I of the Convention
on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) . Trade in the species
or its products are subject to strict regulation by the ratifying parties, and trade for primarily
commercial purposes is banned.
Recently, WWF has been helping the government of China to undertake its National
Conservation Program for the giant panda and its habitat. This program has made significant progress.
Reserves for the pandas cover more than 3.8 million acres of forest in and around their habitat.

I. READING: Read the passage and answer the questions below
Hội An or rarely Faifo, is located in Quang Nam province and is home to approximately
120,000 inhabitants. Hoi An Ancient Town is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East
Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century. Its buildings and its street plan reflect the
influences, both indigenous and foreign, that have combined to produce this unique heritage site.
In 1535 Portuguese explorer and sea captain Antúnio de Faria, coming from Đà Nẵng, tried to
establish a major trading center at the port village of Faifo. Hội An was founded as a trading port by
the Nguyễn Lord sometime around 1595.
In the 18th century, Hội An was considered by Chinese and Japanese merchants to be the best
destination for trading in all of Southeast Asia, even Asia. Japanese believed the heart of all of Asia
(the dragon) lay beneath the earth of Hội An.
In 1999, the old town was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as a well-preserved
example of a Southeast Asian trading port of the 15th to 19th centuries, with buildings that display a
unique blend of local and foreign influences. According to the UNESCO Impact Report 2008 on Hội
An, tourism has bought changes to the area which are not sustainable without mitigation.
Today, the town is a tourist attraction because of its history, traditional architecture and crafts
such as textiles and ceramics. Many bars, hotels, and resorts have been constructed both in Hội An
and the surrounding area. The port mouth and boats are still used for both fishing and tourism.
