What You Already Know
A season is a time of year. The four seasons
are spring, summer, fall, and winter.
The weather changes in each season. The
weather for each season is different in different
places. You can predict the weather for each
season.

Spring comes after winter. In spring the
temperatures get warmer. Summer is the next
season. It is also the warmest season. The trees
are usually full of green leaves.
Fall, or autumn, is cooler than summer.
Some days in fall are rainy. Winter is the
coldest season. It can also be the wettest
season.
In this book you will learn about the
changes in each season. Keep reading to learn
more!

Summer
Summer is the warmest season. The trees
are full of leaves. Insects are everywhere.

4

Around June 22nd, the Sun is at its highest
point in the sky. This day has the longest
daytime and the shortest nighttime of the year.

5

Fall
In fall the weather starts to get cooler. The
leaves on many trees turn yellow, red, and
orange. After the leaves change color, they fall
to the ground.

6

Around September 22nd, there is a day with
the same amount of daytime and nighttime.
This is the start of fall. After that, there is less
daylight each day.
Some animals start to migrate. They move
to areas with warmer weather. There are fewer
insects and plants.

7

Winter
Winter is the coldest season. In some places
you will see snow covering the ground. Icicles

form on tree branches.
Around December 22nd, winter begins. It is
the shortest day and the longest night of
the year.

8

During winter some plants and insects are
dormant. They are inactive. Some are lying
under the ground.
Some animals hibernate in winter. They
are resting to save energy. Some birds migrate
south where it is warmer.

9

Spring
In spring it gets warm again. You will see
flowers starting to grow. There are small leaves
on trees.

10

Around March 22nd, there is a day with the
same amount of daytime and nighttime. Now
the days start to get longer.
Animals that migrated to warmer places go
back home. Other animals stop hibernating.
Plants begin to grow. Insects hatch from eggs.

The seasons help things grow and change.
