UNIT 1: A VISIT FROM A PEN PAL
1. GETTING STARTED ( PHẦN MỞ ĐẦU)
Hãy thực hành với một bạn khác cùng lớp. Một người bạn qua thư người nước ngoài sẽ đến ở
nhà bạn trong một tuần. Trong thời gian bạn ấy đến thăm, bạn sẽ có những hoạt động gì?

2. LISTEN AND READ (NGHE VÀ ĐỌC)
Lan's Malaysian pen pal, Razali Maryam, was staying with Lan last week. Maryam is from Kuala
Lumpur. Maryam and Lan have been pen pals for over two years and they correspond at least
once every two weeks, but this was their first meeting.
On Maryam's first day in Ha Noi, Lan took her to Hoan Kiem Lake. Like Kuala Lumpur, Ha Noi is a
busy modern city. Maryam was really impressed by the beauty of the city and by the
friendliness of its people.
Over the next few days, the girls visited Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, the History Museum and
the Temple of Literature, as well as many beautiful parks and lakes in Ha Noi. On Friday,
Maryam wanted to visit the mosque on Hang Luoc Street. Lan used to walk past the mosque on
her way to primary school. However, this was Lan's first visit. She enjoyed the peaceful
atmosphere while Maryam was praying.
"I wish you had a longer vacation," Lan said to Maryam at the end of the week.
"Yes, I wish I had more time to get to know your beautiful country better. Lan, would you like to
come and visit me next summer?" Maryam asked.
"That would be great! However, it seems very difficult for me to have a trip abroad. It all
depends on my parents. Anyway, we'll keep in touch."

Yoko: I think it's very interesting. It has old temples and ancient historical remains.

Malaysia is one of the countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). It is
divided into two regions, known as West Malaysia and East Malaysia. They are separated by
about 640 km of the sea and together comprise an area of 329,758 sq km. Malaysia enjoys
tropical climate. The Malaysian unit of currency is the ringgit, consisting of 100 sen.
The capital of Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur and it is also the largest city in the country. The
population in 2001 was over 22 million.Islam is the country's official religion. In addition, there
are other religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism. The nation language is Bahasa Malaysia
(also known simply as Malay). English, Chinese, and Tamil are also widely spoken. The language
of instruction for primary school children is Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese, or Tamil. Bahasa
Malaysia is the primary language of instruction in all secondary schools, although some
students may continue learning in Chinese or Tamil. And English is a compulsory second
language.

I arrived in Da Lat late in the morning, about at twelve o'clock. When I came, the weather was

fine and the day was beautiful. I enjoyed the cool and fresh mild air although it was nearly
midday.
Uncle Huy met me at the bus station and took me home on his motorcycle. I visited many
beautiful places in Da Lat such as the Flower Garden, the Chinese Pagoda and the Love Valley.
Yesterday Uncle Huy took me to the Prenn and Dambri Falls. The falls are very beautiful and
impressive. I've never seen such beautiful and fascinating sights.
This morning, we went to visit the village of the tribe Lat. They live in small cottages. They were
very friendly and they invited us to drink their traditional drink, "cần" alcohol.
For meals, we eat a lot of local nice vegetables and the tasty fruit of Da Lat, fresh strawberries.
The atmosphere here is very lovely and peaceful. I feel relaxed myself with the nature. I'm
enjoying myself very much. I bought some fruits and some souvenirs. I also had some photos of
places I visited to show you about my trip.
I'm planning to go home next Thursday. Uncle and Aunt Huy asked me to give you their regards.

Con đến Đà Lạt vào cuối buổi sáng, về lúc 12:00. Khi con đến, thời tiết tốt và ngày thật đẹp. con
rất thích không khí nhẹ mát mẻ và tươi mặc dù nó đã gần trưa. Bác Huy gặp con ở bến xe và
đưa con về nhà trên chiếc xe máy của mình. Con đã đến thăm nhiều địa điểm đẹp ở Đà Lạt như
Vườn Hoa, chùa Trung Quốc và Thung lũng Tình yêu. Hôm qua Bác Huy đưa con đến thác Prenn
và thác Đambri. Thác rất đẹp và ấn tượng. Tôi chưa bao giờ nhìn thấy cảnh đẹp và hấp dẫn như
vậy. Sáng nay, con và bác đến thăm ngôi làng của bộ tộc Lạt. Họ sống trong những ngôi nhà
nhỏ. Họ rất thân thiện và họ mời chúng tôi uống thức uống truyền thống của họ, "cần" rượu.
