B. longer

C. slower

D. faster

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 41 to 45.
A good deal of fascinating research has been done about the reading patterns of young
people, and it is surprising to discover at what an early age children start expressing
preferences for particular kind of books. A recent report, which examined in detail the
reading habits of primary-school children showed that even seven-year-old boys and girls
have clear views about what they want to read. Girls, in general, read more, and far more
girls than boys preferred reading stories. Boys were showing a taste for the more instant
appeal of picture stories, or else books about their hobbies.
These tastes continue unchanged until the children are teenagers. Apparently girls read
more in general, but more fiction in particular .You could say that there are more
opportunities for girls to read fiction: magazines encourage the fiction habit in girls in their
early teens, and by their late teens they have probably moved on to the adult women’s
magazines. Teenage boys tend to buy magazines about their hobbies: motorcycles, heavy
transport and to on.
Adult reading tastes are also the subject of research. Again the number of women who
read for pleasure is considerably higher than the number of men. It seems that the majority
of women still want love stories. There has also been some analysis of what men actually
read. Apparently only 38 percent of men read anything, but 50 percent of what they read is
fiction in the form of action-packed stories of space or gunmen.
Question 41: The recent research into children’s reading has shown that they _______.
A. begin to read very fast at an early age.
B. examine in detail what they read at school.
C. can read clearly in primary school.
D. form their reading tastes by the time they are seven.
Question 42: If we have a close look at the reading habits of boys and girls we’ll find that

______.
A. schools give more encouragement to girls than to boys.
B. girls are more interested in fiction than boys.
C. picture stories appeal more to girls than boys.
D. magazines appeal more to boys than girls.
Question 43: According to the passage, _______.
A. children generally don’t care what they should read.
B. far more boys than girls are interested in love stories.
C. teenage boys show a taste for magazines about their hobbies.
D. there are more opportunities for girls to buy magazines than for men.
Question 44: It can be inferred from the passage that_________.
A. people have no definite reading tastes.
B. boys change their reading tastes more often than girls.
C. boys and girls form their reading habits by reading magazines.
D. people usually do not change their reading tastes when they grow up.
Question 45: The word “fascinating” in line 1 means most nearly the same as _______.
A. having great attraction

Until recently, humankind seemed to view the ocean as a source of infinite resources. Its
vast size and depth and unexplored frontiers made the ocean appear invulnerable to
overexploitation. The truth is that the populations of many species are decreasing at an
unsustainable rate, and the number of species listed as endangered from marine life families
such as whales, dolphins, manatees and dugongs, salmon, seabirds, sea turtles, and sharks to
name a few, are on the rise. The threats to marine species are difficult to perceive because
marine animals are not as visible as animals on land. But unfortunately, marine creatures are
equally, if not more, vulnerable to problems such as habitat destruction and
overexploitation. Shallow water animals that breathe air, like turtles, manatees, dugongs, and
whales are often hit by boats and caught in fishing gear. Species such as turtles that lay their
eggs on land often lose their nurseries due to coastal development. Animals that have taken
millions of years to evolve, that are invaluable to all ecosystems, have and continue to vanish
from places where they once flourished.
Question 46: What is human’s perception of the ocean so far?
A. The ocean resources will never be exhausted.
B. The ocean is capable of resisting overexploitation.
C. Both A & B are correct.
D. Neither of A & B is correct.
Question 47: All of the following are true EXCEPT ______.
A. Turtles are a kind of shallow water animal.
B. The evolution of animals could take up to millions of years.
C. Powerful animals like sharks run less risk of endangerment.
D. Coastal development affects the reproduction process of some sea animals.
Question 48: Which of the followings is closest in meaning to “vulnerable”?
A. Weak
B. Resistant
C. Energetic

D. Adaptive
Question 49: What is the reason for the difficulty in understanding threats to marine life?
A. That technology is underdeveloped.
B. That humans can hardly see marine creatures.
C. That the rate of population decrease is unsustainable.
D. That there are too many types of marine creatures in the ocean.
Question 50: What does “flourished” in the passage mean?
A. Failed miserably
B. Spread all over
C. Grew in a successful way
D. Changed into something unusual

indicate the correct answers to each of the question.
Reading to oneself is a modern activity which was almost unknown to the scholars of the
classical and medieval worlds, while during the fifteenth century the term “reading”
undoubtedly meant reading aloud. Only during the nineteenth century did silent reading
become commonplace.
One should very wary, however, of amusing that silent reading came about simply because
reading aloud was a distraction to others. Examinations of factors related to the historical
development of silent reading have revealed that it became the unusual mode of reading for
most adults mainly because the tasks themselves changed in character.
The last century saw a steady gradual increase in literacy and thus in the number of readers.
As the number of readers increased, the number of potential listeners declined and thus
there was some reduction in the need of to read aloud. As reading for the benefit of listeners
grew less common, so came the flourishing of reading as a private activity in such public
places as libraries, railway carriages and offices, where reading aloud would cause
distraction to other readers. Towards the end of the century, there was still considerable
arguments over whether books should be used for information or treated respectfully and
over whether the reading of materials such as newspapers was in some way mentally
weakening.
Indeed, this argument remains with us still in education. However, whatever its virtues, the
old shared literacy culture had gone and was replaced by the printed mass media on the one
hand and by books and periodicals for specialized readership on the other. By the end of the
twentieth century, students were being recommended to adopt attitudes to books and to use
reading skills which were inappropriate, if not possible, for the oral reader. The social,
cultural and technological changes in the century had greatly altered what the term “reading”
implied.
33. Reading aloud was more common in the medieval world because….
A. Few people could read to themselves.
B. There were few places available for private reading.

C. Silent reading had not been discovered.
D. People relied on reading for entertainment.
34. The word “commonplace’ in the first paragraph mostly means.
A. Attracting attention
C. most referable
B. For everybody’s use
D. wildly used
35. The development of silent reading during the last century indicated
A. An increase in the number of books
C. a change in the status of literate

Marian Anderson's brilliant singing career began at age six when she sang spirituals at
the Union Baptist Church in her hometown of Philadelphia. She toured Europe in the 1920s,
drawing vast acclaim. However, when she returned to the United States she was still barred
from performing on the American operatic stage. After she was prevented from singing in
Washington’s segregated Constitution Hall in 1939, Eleanor Roosevelt intervened and
arranged for Miss Anderson to perform at the Lincoln Memorial. A crowd of 75,000 people
came to watch her sing before the Memorial. Marian Anderson's beautiful contralto voice
broke down racial barriers, showing white Americans that blacks had a profound
contribution to make to America's cultural life.
Eventually, in 1955, she became the first African-American singer to perform at New
York’s Metropolitan Opera. In her many years of touring, she had to endure a racism that
forced her to enter concert halls and hotels through service entrances. Her grace under this
stress showed a moral perseverance that paralleled that of the famous Martin Luther King, Jr.

King, Jr?
