Presenter Welcome to Fox FM local news! This morning we have in the studio
Bob Partridge from the Kingsbridge Summer Festival. He’s here to tell us about
events next weekend. Hello, Bob. So, what is the next event in the Kingsbridge
summer calendar?
Bob Well, you need your trainers for our next event – the Kingsbridge ten
kilometre race and the family fun run! There are races for everybody. Run fast,
run slow, run for fun, run for a medal, run for charity. Just come down and run!
Presenter Sounds good. When are these races, Bob?
Bob There are three races, and they start in the town centre on Saturday 16th July.
Presenter What time do the races start?
Bob The first race starts at 9 a.m. It’s the Kingsbridge ten kilometre run. This is
the race for athletes and for anyone who is a regular runner.
Presenter When does the next run start?
Bob The family fun run begins at 9.15. It’s three kilometres long and it’s for
everybody: parents, grandparents, older children, friends. You all run together
and there is a medal for everyone at the finish!
Presenter It does sound fun! What’s the third race?
Bob This is the young children’s race and it’s at 9.30. It’s 500 metres long and it’s
for children aged ten and under. All the children get a prize at the end of the race.
Presenter That sounds great for children. Is there any other information on the
races, Bob?
Bob Well, at around 9.40, the winners of the ten kilometre race arrive at the
finish line! The first three men and the first three women win prizes. Everyone
else gets a medal for finishing the race.

Presenter OK everybody – go and join Bob and friends on Saturday 16th
from nine o’clock in the morning. Go and run! Or go and cheer your family and
friends! See you there!

Hi, I’m Cindy. I’m from California but I’m a student here at Stratton Mountain
School. I live at the school, too. I share a bedroom with Celine. She’s from
France. I only live and study here in winter. The rest of the year I live with my
family in California. From March to November I go to the school near my home.
I come to Stratton School because I love skiing. I want to be a champion skier
and I think this is the best place to train in America. The school day is a bit
different here. We have breakfast at seven o’clock, then we go out to train all
morning. After lunch we have lessons for four hours. Then we train again for
two hours until dinnertime. It’s busy, but I love it!

The Day of the Dead is an important festival in Mexico, and in some other
countries too. For example, in Brazil, they call the festival ‘finados’ and celebrate
it on 2nd November. But what about other parts of the world? Well, in Japan,
people celebrate the Bon Festival in August. During this festival, Japanese
people think about the spirits of family members who are dead. In China,
there’s a festival on 5th April called the Ching Ming Festival. People visit family
graves and clean them. And there’s a festival in Nepal called Gai Jatra. People
wear costumes and decorate pictures of their dead family members. The
festival often includes a cow because people believe that a cow can lead the
spirits of their family members into the next world.

1 Maria I’m eighteen on Saturday and I’m having a party. I’m really looking
forward to it. It’s in a restaurant, and all my family and friends are coming.
We’re having dinner first, then there’s a band, so we can all dance! I’ve got a
fantastic new dress. It’s long and red. I feel very grown up when I wear it.
2 James I’m going to a concert next month. It’s my very first concert. I’ve got
two tickets to see my favourite band of all time – Biffy Clyro. It’s in London.
I’m taking my best friend Alex. My dad’s driving us there. Then we’re staying
in a hotel that night. I’m so excited. I can’t wait.
3 Saffy My brother’s getting married and I’m his bridesmaid. I have to wear a
long dress. I really don’t like dresses; I prefer jeans. But I’m happy about the
wedding. It’s in a big hotel in the city. It’s quite a big wedding party; eighty
people are coming. My brother’s a bit nervous, but I’m looking forward to it,
apart from the dress!
4 Marcus I’ve got an important tennis tournament to play this weekend. And I
want to win it. It’s my last chance to win the under-eighteens championship.
I compete every year but I never win it. I’m always second! But this year my
tennis is really good and I think that I can win it. I’m nervous, but excited,
too.
5 Clare My sister Paula is having a baby next month. Paula is very big now.
She’s feeling fine, but she can’t walk very fast! We don’t know if it’s a boy or
girl. Paula says she doesn’t mind, she just wants it to be healthy. But I want it
to be a boy, because we haven’t got a brother.

1 I eat meat, but I don’t eat fish. I don’t really like it. And I hate seafood. I eat
eggs and cheese, and other dairy products. I like fruit but I don’t eat green
vegetables – I know they’re healthy but I don’t like them!
2 I eat meat and fish – I love fish – but I don’t eat processed food. That means I
don’t eat bread or pasta either. I eat a lot of fruit. Nuts and seeds too – I love
them. But I can’t eat dairy products because they come from farms. That’s
against the rules of my diet!
3 I don’t eat any animal products – eggs, dairy products – nothing like that.
And of course, I don’t eat meat or fish either. But my diet isn’t boring – I eat
lots of different fruit and vegetables, nuts and seeds, and … other things.
Mushrooms – I love mushrooms.
4 I eat cheese and eggs, but I don’t eat meat or fish. Or seafood. I eat a lot of
pasta – usually with vegetables. And I love fruit. Bananas are my favourite –
they’re really sweet and tasty. Mmmm.

Alice What shall we do in Dublin? We’ve got two days. Let’s look on this
tourist website.
Jake OK.
Alice I want to go shopping. I want to buy some new clothes.
Jake Look. There’s a good shopping centre near the city centre.

Alice It’s probably quite expensive. Is there a market?
Jake Yes, there is.
Alice But is it open?
Jake Yes, it’s open this Sunday. You can get cheap clothes there. And there’s
live music.
Alice Sounds great. We can go there on Sunday afternoon. What shall we do
on Sunday morning? Go to the zoo, maybe?
Jake Mmm, I’m not very keen on zoos. They’re a bit boring. Let’s go and see
some paintings. Is there a good art gallery?
Alice Let’s see … yes, the National Gallery. They’ve got over 2,500 paintings.
Jake OK. So that’s the art gallery on Sunday morning and the market in the
afternoon. Now, what about Saturday?
Alice Let’s go to a park and have a picnic on Saturday afternoon.
Jake OK, there are lots of parks … Phoenix Park looks nice. There’s a photo here.
Alice Oh, yes. Very nice.
Jake In the morning let’s go for a swim at Sandycove. It looks great.
Alice No, I don’t want to go swimming! The water is really cold!
Jake Well, let’s climb the Sugar Loaf. It’s a mountain near Dublin. There are
fantastic views of the city from the top.
Alice Fine. So, climb a mountain in the morning and go for a picnic in the
afternoon. That’s a good plan.

Presenter Welcome to Movie News! Today we have in the studio Kitty Williams,
a young British actress who is making her first film in America. We want to ask
her about her new Hollywood lifestyle. Hello, Kitty and welcome.
Kitty Thank you.
Presenter Kitty, you are living in Hollywood at the moment. Is the lifestyle
different to London?
Kitty Yes, it’s very different. For example, my friends in London never go to
a gym! But you have to be healthy in Hollywood. Film producers want you to
look good.
Presenter Well, you certainly look good! What do you do differently there?
Kitty First of all, I eat differently. That isn’t difficult, because it’s always very hot!
So I eat a lot of salads and drink a lot of water. But I’m vegetarian, so I usually eat
a lot of vegetables, anyway. But now I don’t eat chips or pasta so often!
Presenter Is it easy to find healthy food in Hollywood?
Kitty Yes, it is. In restaurants you can order your meal with no butter, no
mayonnaise, no sugar, and no salt! People can be very fussy eaters. But I’m not!
Presenter What else do you do to be healthy in Hollywood? Do you exercise?
Kitty Yes, I usually go running. I run in London and Hollywood. It’s easy to do
wherever you are. I get up in the morning, put on my trainers and go outside.
Then I run in one direction for twenty minutes. Then I run back again. Easy!
Everybody runs here, so you say hello to lots of people every morning!
Presenter Is there any exercise that you only do in Hollywood?
Kitty Yes. I go to yoga classes now. Everybody does yoga there. It helps you to
relax when you are making a film.
Presenter So, how do you feel with your new lifestyle?

Kitty I feel great – fit and healthy! But actually, I miss London. It’s much more fun!
Presenter And we miss you! Good luck with your new film!
Kitty Thank you!

1 Lily My hero is the pop singer, Adele. She was born in 1988 in London. She
began to sing when she was four. Her favourite group was the Spice Girls.
While she was at college she wrote and recorded three songs and a friend of
hers put them on the Internet. Someone in a record company heard them
and asked her to make an album. That’s how she started. I think she’s got a
fantastic voice and she writes beautiful songs.
2 Dan My hero is Lionel Messi. He’s a footballer. He’s from Argentina but he
plays for Barcelona in Spain. He was born in 1987. He moved to Barcelona
when he was thirteen in 2000 and he played for the team for the first time

when he was just sixteen years old. He’s a fantastic player. In fact I think he’s
the best player in the world.
3 Emma My hero isn’t someone famous. It’s my grandmother. She died last
year at the age of ninety-one. I loved talking to her and listening to stories
about her life. She was a very brave person. In the Second World War she
drove an ambulance in London. It was very dangerous work. After the war
she got married and had a family. They were very poor so she had to work
very hard. I really admire her!

Mount Fuji is a volcano. It’s 3,776 metres high and it’s about 100 kilometres
south of Tokyo. It’s a very beautiful volcano with snow at the top, and you can
see it in a lot of traditional Japanese pictures. There are five lakes near Mount
Fuji and visitors to these lakes have a great view of the volcano. There is also
a forest at the base of the volcano. There are lots of stories about ghosts and
other supernatural creatures in the forest – but the forest is still a popular place
for walking. Mount Fuji is very popular with climbers – about 300,000 people
climb the volcano every year. They usually do it in July or August. It’s better to
climb at night because then you get to the top when the sun is coming up.
It’s a very beautiful view. From October to May, the climb is more dangerous
because the weather is much worse.

I visited Tokyo with my husband last August and we went on a day trip to Mount
Fuji. We left the hotel in the morning after breakfast and travelled to Fuji by bus.
We didn’t climb the volcano, but the bus took us part of the way up. We had
lunch on Mount Fuji – a traditional Japanese meal. Then in the afternoon, we
went to one of the lakes near Mount Fuji – Lake Ashi – and went on a boat trip
on the lake. From the lake, you get a beautiful view of Fuji. In the evening, we
went back to Tokyo by train – it’s one of the fastest trains in the world, so it didn’t
take very long. It was a fantastic day – the best day of the holiday, in my opinion.
When did she visit? Last August
Who with? Her husband
How did they travel to Fuji? By bus
Where did they have lunch? On Mount Fuji
What did they do in the afternoon? Went to a lake

Jenny Welcome to this week’s British Breaks. Today we are looking at outdoor
holidays in the southwest of England. First, we go to Tom reporting from
Exmoor National Park in North Devon. Over to you, Tom.
Tom Thank you, Jenny. Here I am in Exmoor National Park. I’m standing in a
beautiful valley, beside a river. There are green hills all around. I’m all alone. I
can’t see anyone. I can only hear the water. It is very calm and quiet. This is very
unusual in southern England! Exmoor is an amazing place. And there are so
many ways to enjoy it. I’m staying here for a few days to explore the park, and
here are my suggestions so far.
First of all – walking. Exmoor is the perfect place to go walking. There are over
1,000 kilometres of walks through woods and valleys, beside lakes, and along

beaches. The best thing is that it’s free – you just need to bring strong walking
shoes and lots of water to drink. The Exmoor National Park website has a
fantastic list of guided walks.
Exmoor is also great for cycling. There are lots of cycling maps for easy and
more difficult routes. There are also many organised cycling groups that you
can join. Just remember to ride slowly because of walkers and horses!
And finally, climbing. I went climbing for the first time yesterday and it was a
great experience. There are a number of outdoor centres in the national park.
Their climbing instructors can help you to climb if you are a beginner like me,
or to improve your climbing skills. You have to follow all the safety advice and
learn to use the equipment, but it’s exciting! Exmoor is perfect for climbers. It
has some of the highest sea cliffs for climbing in the UK.
So, there is something for everyone. It’s really beautiful here and I can
recommend it for all the family! Back to you in the studio, Jenny.

1 It’s a very interesting job because every day is different. I love animals and
helping animals is my job – so I’m really happy about that. I see a lot of cats
and dogs, but sometimes snakes and spiders too …
2 I work at a large school in London. There are about 900 students. My subject
is history. We’re studying ancient Rome at the moment …
3 I studied English at university, then I got a job with a magazine. It was a
magazine about cars. Boring! Then I saw a job advert for a newspaper in
London, so I applied – and I got the job! It’s much better – I love it.
4 I work in a hospital in Manchester. It’s hard work – I work very long hours –
but it’s interesting. There are sixty of us at the hospital – that includes all the
nurses. The best thing is helping the patients.
5 I studied chemistry at university. Now I work for a very large food company.
It’s great because at school, chemistry was my favourite subject, and now
I’m forty-five years old and I’m still doing chemistry every day!

Olivia Are you going to go by plane?
Toby No, we’re going to drive there in our car. What about you? Are you going

Olivia Yes, I am. First class, in fact. Well, it’s a nice way to start the holiday.
Toby Yes, I’m sure.
Olivia And I’m going to stay in a five-star hotel by the sea.
Toby Very nice. We aren’t going to stay in a hotel. We’re going to camp.
Olivia Oh … well, it’s cheap, I suppose.
Toby We like camping.
Olivia Is the campsite near the sea?
Toby No, it’s in the mountains. We’re going to go climbing every day.
Olivia Really? I’m not into climbing. I’m going to spend every day on the
beach – and every night, I’m going to visit a different nightclub!
Toby There aren’t any nightclubs in the mountains.
Olivia Oh. So what are you going to do at night?

Boy I’m going to look for a part-time job after the holidays.
Girl Really? Why?
Boy I want to start work in September. Just a few hours a week.
Girl Hmm. But it’s more important to study at this age. You can think about
work when you’re older.

Boy I don’t agree with you. I think it’s good to have some experience of work
at our age. I mean, we’re sixteen! And I want to earn some money.
Girl That’s a good point. I really want a new phone but I can’t ask my
parents for it. But teenagers never earn much money. Companies don’t pay
teenagers much.
Boy I don’t think that’s true. Companies have to pay teenagers the same
as adults.
Girl Really? Hmm. I’m not sure about that.
Boy And a job is a good way to meet new people.
Girl That’s true. And you’re probably bored with all your old friends.
Boy I’m not saying that …
Girl Anyway, your exams are the most important thing. You need good
qualifications to get a good job.
Boy I agree with you. That’s why I’m only going to work a few hours a week.

My name’s Shelley and I’m Australian. I’m married and I’ve got a son. I decided
to find out about our family history. I’m very interested in the early history of
Australia – I think it’s fascinating. And I wanted to find out if we’re descendants

of British prisoners!
I found out that my family came to Australia from Britain in 1860. But Britain
stopped sending prisoners to Australia in 1840. So my family weren’t prisoners. I
was a bit disappointed … Then I looked at my husband’s family.
I found that my husband’s great-great-great-great grandparents met in Sydney
and got married there in 1826. It was their home for the next forty years. His
name was John Bullen and she was Mary Evans. He was a thief and she was the
daughter of a thief! I was very interested!
I found out more about John Bullen. John was a poor boy from London. He
lived on the streets and stole food to eat. The police caught him and they sent
him here to Australia for fourteen years. But John met Mary and they stayed
here and started a family. And here is my son now – his descendant – 200 years
later!
She finds out more about her husband’s ancestors.
