the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
A rather surprising geographical feature of Antarctica is that a huge freshwater lake, one
of the world’s largest and deepest, lies hidden there under four kilometres of ice. Now known as
Lake Vostok, this huge body of water is located under the ice block that comprises Antarctica.
The lake is able to exist in its unfrozen state beneath this block of ice because its waters are
warmed by geothermal heat from the earth’s core. The thick glacier above Lake Vostok actually
insulates it from the frigid temperatures on the surface.
The lake was first discovered in the 1970s while a research team was conducting an aerial

survey of the area. Radio waves from the survey equipment penetrated the ice and revealed a
Trang 4/7 – Mã đề 001

body of water of indeterminate size. It was not until much more recently that data collected by
satellite made scientists aware of the tremendous size of the lake; the satellite-borne radar
detected an extremely flat region where ice remains level because it is floating on the water of
the lake.
The discovery of such a huge freshwater lake trapped under Antarctica is of interest to the
scientific community because of the potential that the lake contains ancient microbes that have
survived for thousands upon thousands of years, unaffected by factors such as nuclear fallout and
elevated ultraviolet light that have affected organism in more exposed areas. The downside of
the discovery, however, lies in the difficulty of conducting research on the lake in such a harsh
climate and in the problems associated with obtaining uncontaminated samples from the lake
without actually exposing the lake to contamination. Scientists are looking for possible way to
accomplish this.
Question 36: What is true of Lake Vostok?
A. It is heated by the sun.
B. It is a saltwater lake.

C. was controlled by a satellite
D. made use of radio waves
Question 38: It can be inferred from the passage that the ice would not be flat if _____.
A. Antarctica were not so cold
B. there were no lake underneath

C. radio waves were not used
D. the lake were not so big
Question 39: Lake Vostok is potentially important to scientists because it _____.
A. may have elevated levels of ultraviolet light

Choosing a career may be one of the hardest jobs you ever have, and it must be done
with care. View a career as an opportunity to do something you love, not simply as a way

to earn a living. Investing the time and effort to thoroughly explore your options can mean the
difference between finding a stimulating and rewarding career and moving from job to job in
an attempt to find the right one. Work influences virtually every aspect of your life, from your
choice of friends to where you live. Here are just a few of the factors to consider.
Deciding what matters most to you is essential in making the right decision. You may
want to begin by assessing your likes, dislikes, strengths, and weaknesses. Think about the
classes, hobbies, and surroundings that you find most appealing. Ask yourself questions, such
as “Would you like to travel? Do you want to work with children? Are you more suited to
solitary or cooperative work?” There are no right or wrong answers; only you know what is
important to you. Determine which job features you require, which ones you would prefer,
and which ones you cannot accept. Then rank them in order of importance to you.
The setting of the job is another factor to take into account. You may not want to sit at a
desk all day. If not, there are a diversity of occupations – building inspector, supervisor, real
estate agent – that involve a great deal of time away from the office. Geographical location
may be a concern, and employment in some fields is concentrated in certain regions.
Advertising job can generally be found only in large cities. On the other hand, many
industries such as hospitality, law education, and retail sales are found in all regions of the
country. If a high salary is important to you, do not judge a career by its starting wages.
Many jobs, such as insurance sales, offers relatively low starting salaries; however, pay
substantially increases along with your experience, additional training, promotions and
commission.
Don’t rule out any occupation without learning more about it first. Some industries
evoke positive or negative associations. The travelling life of a flight attendant appears

Trang 6/7 – Mã đề 001

glamorous, while that of a plumber does not. Remember that many jobs are not what they
appear to be at first, and may have merits or demerits that are less obvious. Flight attendants
must work long, gruelling hours without sleeps, whereas plumbers can be as highly paid as

some doctors. Another point to consider is that as you get mature, you will likely to develop
new interests and skills that may point the way to new opportunities. The choice you make today
need not be your final one.

A. jobs in insurance sales are generally not well-paid
B. people should constantly work toward the next promotion
