Presidential Elections

1

This year Americans elect on a new president on November 6th. It's an important event that happens once

every four years. Currently, the president is always elected from one of the two main parties in the United
States: the Republicans and the Democrats. There are other presidential candidates. However, it is unlikely
that any of these "third party" candidates will win. It certainly hasn't happened in the last one hundred
years.
In order to become the presidential nominee of a party, the candidate must win the primary election.
Primary elections are held throughout each state in the United States in the first half of any election year.
Then, the delegates attend their party convention in order to nominate their chosen candidate. Usually, as in
this election, it's clear who will be the nominee. However, in the past parties have been divided and
choosing a nominee has been a difficult process.
Once the nominees have been selected, they campaign throughout the country. A number of debates are
usually held in order to better understand the candidates' points of view. These points of view often reflect
their party's platform. A party platform is best described as the general beliefs and policies a party holds.
Candidates cross the country by plane, bus, train or by car giving speeches. These speeches are often called
'stump speeches'. In the 19th century candidates would stand on tree stumps to deliver their speeches. These
stump speeches repeat the candidates’ basic views and aspirations for the country. They are repeated many
hundreds of times by each candidate.
Many people believe that campaigns in the United States have become too negative. Each night you can see
many attack ads on the television. These short ads contain sound bites which often distort the truth, or
something the other candidate has said or done. Another recent problem has been voter turnout. There is
often less than 60% turnout for national elections. Some people don't register to vote, and some registered
voters don't show up at the voting booths. This angers many citizens who feel that voting is the most
important responsibility of any citizen. Others point out that not voting is expressing an opinion that the
system is broken.
The United States maintains an extremely old, and some say inefficient, voting system. This system is
called the Electoral College. Each state is assigned electoral votes based on the number of senators and
representatives that state has in Congress. Each state has two Senators. The number of representatives is
determined by the state’s population but is never less than 1. The electoral votes are decided by the popular
vote in each state. One candidate wins all of the electoral votes in a state. In other words, Oregon has 8
electoral votes. If 1 million people vote for the Republican candidate and one million and ten people vote
for the Democratic candidate ALL 8 electoral votes go to the democratic candidate. Many people feel that

this system should be abandoned.

The Battle of Chancellorsville
The Battle of Chancellorsville, one of the most famous battles of the Civil War, took place in Virginia in the
spring of 1863. For months, the two armies had been staked out on opposite banks of a narrow river. The
Confederate troops were led by perhaps the most revered military tactician in American history, General
Robert E. Lee. The Union soldiers were led by "Fighting" Joe Hooker.
In appearance, personality, and lifestyle, these men were nearly perfect opposites. Lee, an older man in
poor health with a gray beard, had a somber, measured demeanor. Hooker was a blond, strapping young
man whose vanity over his appearance was but one aspect of his egotism. Whereas Lee was devout and
principled, Hooker was known for his rollicking enjoyment of both women and whiskey.
Despite the fact that the Confederacy had won the last four major battles and the Union soldiers were
famished, exhausted, and demoralized, Hooker proclaimed, "My plans are perfect. And when I start to
carry them out, may God have mercy on Bobby Lee, for I shall have none." Why, aside from
a propensity for narcissism, was Hooker so confident?
Hooker had used spies, analysts, and even hot air balloons to compile a vast amount of intelligence about
Lee’s army. He had discerned, for example, that Lee had only 61,000 men to Hooker’s own
134,000. Buoyed by his superior numbers, Hooker covertly moved 70,000 of his men fifteen miles up and
across the river, and then ordered them to sneak back down to position themselves behind Lee’s army. In
effect, Hooker had cut off the Confederate soldiers in front and behind. They were trapped. Satisfied with
his advantage, Hooker became convinced that Lee’s only option was to retreat to Richmond, thus assuring a

4

Union victory.
Yet Lee, despite his disadvantages of both numbers and position, did not retreat. Instead, he moved his
troops into position to attack. Union soldiers who tried to warn Hooker that Lee was on the offensive were
dismissed as cowards. Having become convinced that Lee had no choice but to retreat, Hooker began to
ignore reality. When Lee’s army attacked the Union soldiers at 5:00 p.m., they were eating supper,
completely unprepared for battle. They abandoned their rifles and fled as Lee’s troops came shrieking out
of the brush, bayonets drawn. Against all odds, Lee won the Battle of Chancellorsville, and Hooker’s forces

withdrew in defeat.

PART 2: TOPIC: Write a paragraph about the formal school education system in Vietnam.
The current formal school education system in Vietnam, as we all know, consists of three levels; preschool, primary and secondary educations. Secondary education is divided into lower and upper stage.
Now, in some provinces especially in cities, there are two parallel school systems in pre-school, primary or
even secondary education; state and private schools. Tuition fees are different very much from state to
private schools. In both systems, the academic year, from early September to late May, is divided into two
semesters consisting of four to five months each. Children usually start their pre-school at the age of three,
when they go to the nurseries but this stage is not compulsory. When children reach the age of six, they
must go to primary schools. The primary education lasts five years with 5 grades; from grade 1 to grade 5.

7

After having finished primary education, children can go to lower secondary schools from grade 6 to grade
9. Children who complete lower secondary may be accepted to upper secondary schools which last three

years with 3 grades; ten to twelve. It depends on the locality that children have to take the entrance
examination to be upper secondary students. Children finish the school education when they finish grade
12. Often, at the end of upper secondary education, student have to take the General Certificate of
Secondary Education (GCSE), the requirement to go to university or college, The GCSE used to take place
in early June, but this year in early July.
