Asteroid Impacts
Have you ever wondered what would happen if an asteroid struck the Earth? There would be many negative
environmental effects. This actually happened around 65 million years ago. The resulting heat pulse destroyed
almost every dinosaur on the planet in just a few hours. The only ones left were those that were in burrows or
underwater.
This asteroid was 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) wide and hit Chicxulub in the Yucatan with the force of 100
million megatons of TNT. A new paper published by several university researchers in the United States shows
how ejected material would have heated the atmosphere like a global oven set on broil.
[1] ‗'The impact of an asteroid or comet several kilometers across heaps environmental insult after insult
on the world,‖ said Dr. Daniel Durda. [2] He is a senior research scientist at the Southwest Research Institute.
[3] One major cause of damage created by large asteroid impacts is global wildfires. These wildfires could be

Jacob Lawrence

Jacob Lawrence was a powerful observer and storyteller with a lifelong focus on the struggle for freedom
and justice. His parents were part of the Great Migration of African-Americans from the South to the North of
the United States in the earliest years of the twentieth century. He was born in the Northeast in 1917, and at
the age of six moved with his family to Harlem in New York City. [1] When he told an interviewer later in
life, ―I am the black community," he was seriously assessing his representation of the common African-

4

American man. He felt none of the alienation from Harlem that was felt by other black artists of the 1930s,
but rather adopted it as his own.
[2] Lawrence trained as a painter at the Harlem Art Workshop of the New York Public Library‘s 135
Street Branch. The art workshops and schools of Harlem, where blacks taught blacks, were critical to
budding black artists, since the academies of the day were generally not open to them. He was part of a
second wave of Harlem artists, much younger than those who took part in the Harlem Renaissance of the
1920s. His art was also different from theirs, as he was not interested in the idealized, fake-primitive images
of blacks that had flooded America since the Reconstruction. [3]
Lawrence called his style ―dynamic cubism.‖ He took Harlem as his primary inspiration and developed a
new type of modernism. His art was expressed most often in a series of large panels that could be viewed
separately but together told the story of the black American struggle. He used flame – like forms and
pushed oppositions of structure; generally the paintings tended towards an Egyptian stillness. He debts to
Cubism and to Matisse are patent: the flat, sharp overlaps of form and a reliance on silhouette. Also, the
colors he used came more from his experience in Harlem than from other art. [4]

Part 2:
It is very true when people say that high school is the best the four years of your life for some reasons. First of
all, you will have a chance to widen your knowledge, and be mature day by day. Secondly, you meet so many
new people, from all walks of life, and from all over the world during high school. You will love some of
them, but others not so much. Besides, you will fall in and out of love, lose and gain friends, and make too
many memories to count. After that, you are excited that you will be graduating, but you will be leaving a
family that welcomed you with open arms for four years. This is an opportunity for you to get a good job with
a good degree. It is believed that high school is truly the best time of your life.
