Read the following passage and the mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 50 to 59.

Although speech is the most advanced form of communication, there were many ways of
communicating without using speech. Signals, signs, symbols, and gesture may be found in every known
culture. The basic function of a signal is to impinge upon the environment in such a way that it attracts
attention, as for example, the dots and dashes of telegraph circuit. Coded to refer to speech, the potential
for communication is very great. Less adaptable to the codification of words, signs also contain meaning in
and of themselves. A stop sign or a barber pole conveys meaning quickly. Symbols are more difficult to
describe than either signals or signs because of their intricate relationship with the receiver’s cultural
perceptions. In some cultures, applauding in a theatre provides performers with an auditory symbol of
approval. Gestures such as waving and hand shaking also communicate certain cultural messages.
Although signals, signs, symbols, and gestures are very useful, they do have a major disadvantage. They
usually do not allow ideas to be shared without the sender being directly adjacent to the receiver. As a
result, means of communication intended to be used for long distances and extended periods are based on
speech. Radio, television, and the telephone are only a few.

Read the following passage and the mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 60 to 64.
Dinosaurs were reptiles that lived during a period of earth’s history called Mesozoic Era, which is
known as the Age of Reptiles. The first dinosaurs appeared more than 200 million years ago. For many
millions of years, they dominated the land with their huge size and strength. Then about 65 million years
ago, they died out rather suddenly, never to reemerge.
The word “dinosaur” comes from two Greek words meaning “terrible lizard”. Dinosaurs were not
lizards, but their appearance could be truly terrifying. The biggest ones weighed more than ten times as
much as a mature elephant and nearly equaled the size of most modern-day whales. The famous kinds of
dinosaurs, including the brontosaur and tyrannosaurus rex, reached 80 to 90 feet in length. Not all
dinosaurs were giants, however, some were actually no larger than a chicken.
Scientists still do not know what caused dinosaurs to disappear. One theory involves a change of the
earth’s climate. It is believed that temperatures dropped significantly towards the end of the Cretaceous
Period. Too large to hibernate and not having fur or feathers for protection, it is possible that the climate

I love reading novels. My hobby of reading novels started two years ago when my sister gave me a
novel as a birthday present - The Davinci code. At first, I had no interest in reading such a long
book at all. However, due to that novel's fame, i tried to finish it, which finally became my favorite
novel. In another word, i was given a passion for novels, especially detective novels. Since then, i
often dedicate myself to reading novels. When reading, i feel absorbed in thrilling situations,
complex logic and unusual plots. Novels are now what i do not mind about the cost and the time to
spend on.
