‘The author has successfully
accomplished the task he set
himself for this text: to provide
a comprehensive yet accessible
introduction to the economics of
innovation. It actually exceeds this remit since it engages
the reader in a much broader appreciation of the process
and contextual structures of innovation. . . this book is a
welcome and valuable addition to the field for students
and teachers alike who are fascinated by this increasingly
important field of research.’

The Economics of
Innovation

‘What do Google, Facebook, mobile phones and creative
commons have in common? The answer is: economics!
Stefano Comino and Fabio Manenti have written a crisp
and thorough treatment of the economics of information
and communications technologies. This valuable book fills
a real gap in the market.’

– Tommaso Valletti, Imperial College Business School, UK
This text rigorously blends theory with real-world applications
to study the industrial organisation of the ICT sector. Each
of the self-contained chapters, which can be studied in
isolation, contains theoretical models that are presented in
a clear and accessible way. Throughout, a series of useful
boxes complements and elucidates the theories with
additional empirical/anecdotal evidence. This text will be of
great interest to advanced undergraduate students with a
background in microeconomics and game theory, particularly
those taking courses in industrial organisation, innovation
economics and the economics of networks.

How Capitalism
Destroyed Itself

Edited by Timothy Clark,

Mike Wright, Imperial

London, UK and University
of Ghent, Belgium and
David J. Ketchen, Jr., Auburn University, US

William Kingston, Trinity
College, Dublin, Ireland

Technology Displaced by

‘For many, the process of publishing in the best
management journals is an enigma wrapped in a mystery.
Even when they are successful, they are never sure why.
And too often rejections hurt, but don’t provide insight
about how to increase the likelihood of success. This book
begins to unwrap this enigma by describing the process
and providing practical guidance that scholars at all levels
can use to navigate this intellectual minefield. I wish I had
this book earlier in my career.’
– Jay B. Barney, University of Utah, US
‘Scholars seek to have their work published in the top
journals, both because these elite outlets provide the most
visible platforms for research products and because they
confer stature on the authors and their institutions. Of
course, getting published in the top journals is known to be
devilishly difficult. This book, How to Get Published in the
Best Management Journals, consisting of chapters written
by premier, highly accomplished scholars from around
the world, provides invaluable insights – ranging from the
philosophical and motivational to the tactical and nittygritty. I wish this book had existed when I was starting out,
and I will be encouraging my students and colleagues to
dig into it.’
– Donald C. Hambrick, Pennsylvania State University, US
An increasing number of universities around the globe
are rewarding faculty who place their work in top
management journals. Drawing on the insights from
top journal editors and leading scholars in the field, this
book is a treasure trove of tips for publishing in the best
management journals.
The topics covered include the mysteries of the review

process, getting your methodology right, publishing across
disciplinary boundaries, the rise of open access journals,
publishing ethics, making use of peer review, targeting
special issues, sustaining a publications career, and making
sense of journal rankings.
Drawing on the considerable experience of its authors,
and offering candid insights that are often held as secrets
among senior faculty, this book takes the reader behind
the scenes of the journal review process, making it a mustread for those seeking to advance their career.

‘This sweeping account of the rise
and projected fall of capitalism
is as original as it is gripping.
Kingston locates the hinge that
moves capitalism as the institutions governing intellectual
property rights, and argues persuasively that the system
is now undermining itself as innovation shifts from the
technological to the financial domain.’
– John A. Mathews, Macquarie Graduate School of
Management, Sydney
‘It is a serious piece of scholarship. Integrating economic
history, economic thought, patent-hoarding, venture

capital and the changing global economy, Kingston asks
if modern capitalism might be an internally inconsistent
system. Like Schumpeter, he is concerned that creative
innovation might be stagnating into institutional
ossification. It is an interesting argument, well presented,
cross-disciplinary and thought-provoking.’

Critical Studies

The Elgar Companion to Innovation
and Knowledge Creation

Alternative Approaches
to the
Pro-Innovation Bias

A Multi-disciplinary Approach
Edited by Harald Bathelt, University of Toronto,
Patrick Cohendet, HEC Montreal, Canada,
Sebastian Henn, Leibniz Institute for Regional

Geography, Germany and Laurent Simon, HEC
Montreal, Canada

Edited by Benoît Godin,
Institut National de la
Recherche Scientifique,
Canada and
Dominique Vinck, Université
de Lausanne, Switzerland
Different theories, models and narratives of innovation
compete for both legitimacy and authority. However,
despite the variations, they all offer a consistent proinnovation bias, relegating imitators to a non-innovative
role, dismissing resistance as irrational, and overlooking
the value of non-users and collateral impacts. This book
looks at innovation from a different perspective and asks,
what has been left out? It offers a reflexive view and invites
researchers to consider new avenues of research, through
a critique of current representations of innovation.

This Companion provides a comprehensive state-ofthe-art overview and critical evaluation of existing
conceptualizations and new developments in innovation
research. Arguing that innovation research requires interand transdisciplinary explanations and methodological
pluralism at various levels, it draws on multiple
perspectives of innovation, knowledge and creativity
from economics, geography, history, management,
political science and sociology. The Companion provides
the definitive guide to the field and introduces new
approaches, perspectives and developments.

Handbook of Innovation
and Standards

Responsible Innovation
Governance at Stake
Edited by Philippe Larédo, Université Paris-Est, France
and Sally Randles, University of Manchester, UK
This book is born from increasing attention in social and
political sciences, and from policy actors, to the topic of
responsible innovation. Most have focused on the creation
of new governance frameworks which entreat research and
innovation actors to be more ‘responsible’ in the sense of
being more responsive to societal problems and needs. The
authors have chosen a different starting point and take a
step back from this prescriptive lens to develop the concept
of de-facto responsible innovation. They argue, and
illustrate through a series of short case studies, that certain
actors are already adept and skilled at identifying and
addressing perceived wrongs in the world, and that these
actors collectively create organisational structures and
governance mechanisms which are aimed at steering and
transforming practice. As a process of mutual adaptation
and societal transformation, this approach to responsible

innovation foregrounds the role and capabilities of valuesmotivated entrepreneurial actors in institutional change
processes.

Edited by Richard Hawkins, University of
Calgary, Canada, Knut Blind, Berlin University of
Technology, Germany and Erasmus University,
the Netherlands and Robert Page, University of
Calgary, Canada
Innovation and standardization might seem to represent
polar opposites, but over many years, various scholars
have noted close connections between the two. This
Handbook assembles a broad range of thinking on
this subject, from several disciplinary perspectives, as
contributed by over 30 leading scholars and experienced
practitioners. Collectively, they summarize and synthesize
the existing body of knowledge (theory and evidence)
pertaining to standards and innovation, and provide many
insights into how this knowledge can be useful to scholars,
industrial strategists, policy-makers and standards
practitioners.
Drawn from leading experts in several social science
disciplines, this Handbook provides new insights into
innovation processes and systems using theoretical,
empirical and applied approaches.

Advanced Introduction to
National Systems of Innovation
Bengt-Åke Lundvall, Aalborg University, Denmark
and Sciences-Po, Paris, France, Cristina Chaminade,
Lund University, Sweden and Shagufta Haneef,
Aalborg University, Denmark
Since its emergence in the 1980s the national innovation
system (NIS) concept has become widely used by scholars
and policymakers alike. In the course of its rapid diffusion
it has provoked controversy on fundamental issues.

Where did NIS emerge? What is the theoretical core of the
concept? Is it actually a scientific concept or simply a buzzword? How useful is it in terms of low income countries?
Is it meaningful to study national systems in a globalizing
economy? What are the legitimate policy implications? This
book provides an in depth analysis of all these questions as
well as recommending future avenues of research.

Innovation and Liberalization in the European Defence Sector
A Small Country Perspective
Fulvio Castellacci, University of Oslo and NUPI and Arne Fevolden, University of Oslo and
Nordic Institute for Studies in Innovation, Research and Education, Norway

‘The defence sector is a critical industry that is currently undergoing a phase of momentous
transformation. Over the last twenty years, market liberalization, the growing instability of geopolitical scenarios and rapid technological change have completely reshaped the structural features
of this industry. Taking as a starting point the Norwegian case, Fulvio Castellacci and Arne Fevolden
provide a very acute analysis of the main trends of evolution of the European defence industry. Their
study makes good use of the latest insights emerging from the economics of innovation, international
trade and industrial dynamics literature. One of the most innovative features of Castellacci and
Fevolden’s approach is the construction of an industry-tailored agent based simulation model that permits the systematic
exploration of different policy scenarios. Because of its broad scope and its original approach, this book is going to represent
fundamental reading for all economists and political scientists interested in the defence industry for a long time to come.’

Handbook on Responsible Innovation
A Global Resource

Edited by René von Schomberg, European
Commission and Jonathan Hankins, The Bassetti
Foundation, Italy
The Handbook constitutes a global resource for the fast
growing interdisciplinary research and policy communities
addressing the challenge of driving innovation towards
socially desirable outcomes. This book brings together
well-known authors from the US, Europe and Asia who
develop conceptual and regional perspectives on responsible
innovation as well as exploring the prospects for further
implementation of responsible innovation in emerging
technological practices ranging from agriculture and
medicine, to nanotechnology and robotics. The emphasis
is on the socio-economic and normative dimensions of
innovation including issues of social risk and sustainability.

Welfare State
Mårten Blix, Research Institute

The Swedish welfare state finds
itself in the middle of two major
upheavals: The impact of technology
and immigration. Having taken
in more refugees per capita than most other countries,

the pillars of the welfare state are being shaken. Digital
technologies are set to strengthen already existing trends
towards job and wage polarization. This book explores how
these trends are more pronounced due to the rigidity of the
labor market and the comprehensiveness of tax-financed
welfare services.

constitutes a decisive further
step in strengthening and legitimizing these advances. It
contributes to fill an important gap regarding research
methodologies for service innovation. It presents a dozen

this contribution, the book constitutes a valuable tool for
service scholars and service practitioners alike.’

Edited by Anders Örtenblad, Nord University, Norway
‘This knowledge management Handbook is an excellent
addition to the knowledge management literature. As the
Handbook is very international in its approach, it will be an
excellent resource for international policy analysts wanting
to know more about knowledge management and scholars
and practitioners wanting to update and further extend
their understanding of knowledge management in the
international context.’

The New Consumer Online
A Sociology of Taste, Audience, and Publics
Edward F. McQuarrie, Santa Clara University, US
‘McQuarrie explores online consumer behavior from the
perspective of a sociologist. His book is a theoretical,
philosophical, and at times whimsical collection of essays.
McQuarrie’s work includes approaches to marketing
research as well as marketing rhetoric and semiotics. He
offers this multifaceted, thoroughly academic look at a
phenomenon of still-growing importance that has had little
investigation from a sociological perspective. Summing Up:
Recommended.’

‘An innovative and most valuable tour de force about
geography/technology intersections in economic, social
and political contexts. The thirty one chapters discuss the
histories of specific technologies, 20th century advances
and most recent innovations, the leading producers and

The technologies addressed by author teams (mostly
geographers) include railroads, air transport, automobiles,
ports, radio, television, satellites, pipelines, geothermal

sites, dams and more recent advances: the internet,
drones, fiber optics, mobile phones, fracking, solar energy,
nanotechnology, biometrics, location based services,
code-spaces, virtual realities, LEED buildings, gender/
technology interfaces, just-in-time technologies and
health care advances. An excellent source of disciplinary,
interdisciplinary and international literatures. Many
chapters include maps and graphics. Useful for disciplinary

Technical University of Berlin, Germany
While the US has traditionally been successful in
commercialising new technologies, Europe is confronted with
an increasing dependency for fast developing technologies
like biotechnology or ICT, despite having some of the best
universities in the world. This book will explore the key
attributes of commercialising academic knowledge, focusing
on spin-offs. Bringing together the visions and best practices
used by leading academics and professionals across Europe,
the editors provide new and practical insights on the topic in an

attempt to resolve the European paradox.

expected to garner increasing attention and play a key role
in future development. This book examines the biomaterials

Economic Development

Edited by Linda Wedlin, Uppsala University, Sweden
and Maria Nedeva, University of Manchester, UK

Aldo Geuna, University of Torino
and Collegio Carlo Alberto, Italy
and Federica Rossi, Birkbeck,
University of London, UK
‘. . . Geuna and Rossi’s The University

universities’ teaching, research, and technology transfer
activities may contribute to economic growth, while
cautioning decision-makers not to rely overmuch on popular
statistical indicators of that performance.’
– Science & Public Policy

‘Introduction of a common European currency has been,
and is, a process bristling with difficulties. Will establishing
European science be any easier? The contributors to the
volume have treated this question with the seriousness it
deserves. The results steer away from an easy optimism, but
emphasize the importance of such enterprise. This insightful
text should be of interest to policy makers and scientists
alike, not the least because it shows how the two groups
influence each other.’

New Leading Firms from
Emerging Countries

Economics of Research and Development is a collection of
the major readings in the development of this topic, from
its origins in the work of Kenneth Arrow, Robert Solow, and
Zvi Griliches to present day concerns with the financing
of R&D and measurement of its returns. Topics covered
include historical perspectives, market structure and the
various ways R&D is conducted, the role of venture capital
and government incentives, the measurement of R&D

returns including spillovers to other firms or countries and
the contribution of R&D to economic growth.
The volume serves as an invaluable reference for those

In recent years many new international market leaders from
the BRICS countries have emerged in several manufacturing
and service industries. This important study answers a
number of crucial questions including, how did these
companies rise up to become important players in their
respective industries? What is the contribution of systemic
and country specific factors? What is the role of internal
firm factors in enabling these companies to become market
leaders? The book presents evidence from companies in
the automotive, pharmaceutical and ICT industries from

National Innovation

The Latin American
Experience
Edited by Gabriela Dutrénit,
Universidad Autónoma
Metropolitana-Xochimilco,
Mexico and Judith Sutz,
Universidad de la República, Uruguay
‘This book presents Latin America’s innovation systems
in a new theoretical and political light. The focus is upon
how innovation processes can become inclusive; a major
challenge for the non-egalitarian Latin American countries.
The analytical framework combines Amartya Sen’s capacity
approach with a knowledge economics perspective. One
major conclusion is that there is a need for ambitious public
policy initiatives aiming explicitly at inclusiveness. The
book offers a new perspective on innovation systems and
innovation policy and it is of interest for innovation scholars
as well as for policy makers responsible for the design of
development strategies in emerging economies.’

Towards Better Models
Edited by Stefan Kuhlmann,

University of Twente and
Gonzalo Ordóñez-Matamoros,
University of Twente, the
Netherlands and Universidad
Externado de Colombia
‘This Research Handbook addresses head-on one of the
main challenges of the 21st century: how to realize the new
Sustainable Development Goals in emerging economies and
developing countries. The contributors not only offer firstrate and original research, but also daringly take normative
stances on how to better use knowledge, science, technology
and innovation for development. The volume critically
reviews existing innovation policies and convincingly offers
a comprehensive set of alternative models. The turn from a
traditional growth-based innovation policy to a more socially
inclusive policy transcends the divide between development
studies and science, technology and innovation studies. This
book therefore is also highly relevant for the emerging field
of RRI (Responsible Research and Innovation).’

Keun Lee, Seoul National

‘The Korean experience has
fascinated scholars around the world as one of the most
remarkable stories of “catch-up” from very low to high
levels of development. This book, by one of the leading
Korean experts on industrial policy, argues that catch-up
is not about following the paths of frontrunners but rather
about finding new path to technologically “leapfrog”. The
application of this fundamental insight into the Korean
story will be recognized as a landmark in this debate.’

‘This is a timely and insightful book that looks into
the relationships between knowledge production and
development in four developing countries in Asia, Africa and

Ecosystem

Robert D. Hisrich, Kent State
University, US

Edited by David B.
Audretsch, Indiana
University, Bloomington and
Albert N. Link, University
of North Carolina at
Greensboro, US
This book brings together leading
research and scholarship on one of the newest and most
compelling forces of economic growth, dynamism and
innovation – entrepreneurial ecosystems. Particular
emphasis is given to the role of innovation, startups, SMEs
and technology transfer in shaping the entrepreneurial
ecosystem, as well as its impact on firm performance and
regional economic performance.
From the perspectives of theory, empirical analysis
and public policy, this book shows why entrepreneurial
ecosystems have become the new economic superstars
in the global economy. It provides explicit analysis of
policies promoting entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial
ecosystems, and examines the link between
entrepreneurial ecosystems and universities.

Hisrich pinpoints the essential
principles of forging a new

venture in an existing corporate
context. In this environment, starting and operating a
new business includes considerable risk and requires
effort to overcome inertia to create something new of
value to both the organization as well as the market and
individuals. The book outlines the factors involved in
this process and details the unique aspects of corporate
entrepreneurship and corporate venturing.

Institutional Conditions
for Innovation
Edited by Francesca Visintin
and Daniel Pittino, University

of Udine, Italy

The Mason Years
Zoltán J. Ács, London School
of Economics and Political
Science, UK and George
Mason University, US
‘This book brings together much-admired pieces of
literature to help us to understand the dynamics of global
entrepreneurship, situating them within the formal
institutions and systems of incentives in the countries and
regions where they begin and shows how they are later
expanded to larger markets. This book will also help the
emerging economies to strategize their public policies for
entrepreneurship development. This book is recommended
to scholars and practitioners engaged in entrepreneurship
research, or studying the entrepreneurial behaviors of
global enterprises.’
– Science & Public Policy

Europe needs more innovative
companies that grow quickly and
end up big. This book examines SME growth, innovation
and success, to suggest that fast growing firms could
offer a major contribution to the recovery of a European
economy. The contributors examine 11 case studies
from Italian firms, breaking the book up into three parts:
context, actors and strategy. The topics discussed include
entrepreneurship and technological clusters, innovative
start-ups and growth factors, and family firms as the

incubators of new ventures.

‘This excellent book fills an important gap in
the literature on clusters and cluster policy. In
my view, it is the most comprehensive overview
on evolutionary cluster thinking to date and
therefore a must read for scholars in the field.
But thanks to its relevant ideas, policy lessons
and case studies I also consider it a good read
for forward-looking policy makers involved in
cluster development.’
– Gert-Jan Hospers, University of Twente,
the Netherlands
One-size-fits-all cluster policies have been
rightly criticized in the literature. One
promising approach is to focus cluster policies
on the specific needs of firms depending on
the stage of development (emergence, growth,
sustainment or decline) their cluster is in. In
this highly insightful book, these stage-specific

cluster policies are analyzed and evaluated.
Moreover, several chapters also focus on
smart specialization policies to promote
regional development by taking into account
the emergence and adaptation of clusters and
industries. In so doing, the book contributes to
a newly emerging literature on how the cluster
life cycle concept can inform policies and how
these policies differ from static approaches
that ignore the dynamism of clusters. The
underlying idea is to foster the ability of
clusters to renew themselves and to generate
new developmental paths, thus preventing
stagnation and decline.

Geographies of Growth

Handbook of Regions
and Competitiveness

Innovations, Networks and Collaborations
Edited by Charlie Karlsson, Jönköping International
Business School and Blekinge Institute of
Technology, Martin Andersson, Blekinge Institute of
Technology, CIRCLE, Lund University and Research
Institute of Industrial Economics (IFN) and
Lina Bjerke, Jönköping University, Sweden
Today we can observe an increasing spatial divide as some
large urban regions and many more medium-sized and
small regions face growing problems such as decreasing
labour demand, increasing unemployment and an ageing
population. In view of these trends, this book offers a better
understanding of the general characteristics and specific
drivers of the geographies of growth. It shows how these
may vary in different spatial contexts, how hurdles and

barriers to growth in different types of regions can be dealt
with, how and to what extent resources in different areas
can develop, and how the potential of these resources to
stimulate growth can be realised.
This book presents a collection of chapters, divided into
four main perspectives, that together deal with these
issues.

Regionalism

‘This book helps us better understand the geography of
economic competitiveness. With contributions from an
international cast of leading scholars, it shows what works
and what doesn’t and what it means for efforts to improve
the competitiveness of regions and nations.’
– Richard Florida, University of Toronto, Canada
The field of regional development is subject to an
ever-increasing multiplicity of concepts and theories
seeking to explain uneven competitiveness. In particular,
economic geographers and spatial economists have rapidly
developed the theoretical tools by which to approach
such analyses. The aim of this Handbook is to take stock
of regional competitiveness and complementary concepts
as a means of presenting a state-of-the-art discussion
of the advanced theories, perspectives and empirical

explanations that help make sense of the determinants of
uneven development across regions.

‘Hans-Peter Brunner has produced
here a very thoughtful piece of
scholarship. This important book is genuinely innovative
and very well executed. It addresses a very significant
problem – how the integration and inter-linkage of national
markets through regional cooperation and integration
adds to productivity growth. The book goes on to define
a meaningful theoretical framework, describes relevant
regional experiences, and then presents a road map
for cluster development. As such, it will be of value to
academics, practitioners and policymakers alike.’

Innovation is changing and this exciting book explores how
the shift to more collaborative ways of working with users,
on-line communities and the crowd opens up novel business
possibilities. The Innovation Opportunity Space approach
enables managers, policymakers and academics to better
understand emerging new business opportunities. Drawing
on the findings of international research, the book provides
a systematic and clear understanding of the radical business
models new forms of innovation are making possible. These
are explored across a wide range of examples and case studies,
with the final chapter including a series a tools for those who

‘This ambitious book is at the vanguard of the debate

on regional development and innovation. It revisits the
classical concept of Innovative Milieus to interrogate more
capacious forms and modes of innovation and articulate
new ways of thinking about regional development.
Drawing on highly inspiring case-stories, it offers a
thought-provoking and timely contribution that goes well
beyond the classic innovation-for-regional-competitiveness
paradigm. A recommended read for scholars interested in

Victor Galaz, Stockholm University, Sweden
‘It is clear that as a species we haven’t yet figured out how
to work together to solve the great global environmental
challenges we face today. In this book Victor Galaz
usefully and simply introduces the current debates around
planetary boundaries before diving into the challenges
of finding solutions to governance problems in a complex
globalised world which is experiencing rapid technological
developments (from trading robots to synthetic biology).
He takes inspiration from people like Nobel Laureate Elinor
Ostrom whose work on protecting the commons is second

Whether within or beyond the confines of the state, digitalisation continues to transform politics, society and democracy.
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have already considerably affected political systems and structures, and no
doubt they will continue to do so in the future. Adopting an international and comparative perspective, Digital Democracy in a
Globalized World examines the impact of digitialisation on democratic political life. It offers theoretical analyses as well as case
studies to help readers appreciate the changing nature of democracy in the digital age.

Privacy in Public Space
Edited by Tjerk Timan, Bryce C. Newell and
Bert-Jaap Koops, Tilburg University,
the Netherlands
This book examines privacy in public space from both legal
and regulatory perspectives. With on-going technological
innovations such as mobile cameras, WiFi tracking,
drones and augmented reality, aspects of citizens’ lives
are increasingly vulnerable to intrusion. The contributions
describe contemporary challenges to achieving privacy and
anonymity in physical public space, at a time when legal
protection remains limited compared to ‘private’ space.
To address this problem, the book clearly shows why

privacy in public space needs defending. Different ways of
conceptualizing and shaping such protection are explored,
for example through ‘privacy bubbles’, obfuscation
and surveillance transparency, as well as revising the

‘The book Managing Virtual Teams proposes a complete
approach based on a solid analysis to understand the
virtual team environment. It gives practical tips also, which
is very helpful and can be adapted to various situations
in business and/or education. Virtual team managers,
virtual team members and anyone involved in virtual
collaborative connections are clearly guided and will find
answers to the main questions raised by virtual teaming.’
