1.Conjuntions:
Both… and ;not only ... but also
Neither … nor ...; Either ... .or ....
Example:

Viet is a handsome boy.

Duc also is a handsome boy.

=>Both Viet and Duc are handsome boys.

=>Not only Viet but also Duc is a handsome boy.
Not only + noun + but also + noun

Exercise 1: Combine the sentences, using
“both…and” and “not only…but also”
1. Diana is intelligent. Her sister is intelligent, too.
2. My brother can sing. He can play the piano.
3. My mother bought me a dictionary last week. She
bought me a red bike, too.
4. I hate beer. I hate coffee.
5. My uncle gave me some money. He gave my
brother some money, too.


1.Diana is intelligent. Her sister is intelligent,
too.
 Both Diana and her sister are intelligent.
 Not only Diana but also her sister is
intelligent.
2. My brother can sing. He can play the piano.
 My brother can both sing and play the piano.
 My brother can not only sing but also play
the piano.



3. My mother bought me a dictionary last week.
She bought me a red bike, too.
 My mother bought me both a dictionary and
a red bike last week.
 My mother bought me not only a dictionary
but also a red bike last week.

4. I hate beer. I hate coffee.
 I hate both beer and coffee.
 I hate not only beer but also coffee.


5. My uncle gave me some money.
He gave my brother some money, too.
 My uncle gave both me and my brother
some money.
 My uncle gave not only me but also
my brother some money.


Another example:

We travel to Hue by plane.

We travel to Hue by train.

We travel to Hue by either train or plane.
Either train or plane is used to travel to Hue.
⇒ Either … or ...

(hoặc … hoặc …)


Exercise 2: Combine the sentences, using
“either…or…”
1. John or you wrote this on the table.
2. I’m going to give Mary a book or a pen for
her birthday.
3. We’re going to Miami or New Orleans for
our vacation.
4. You or I have to go to the principal’s office.
5. You will have to cook lunch or go to the
market.


1- John or you wrote this on the table.
Either John or you wrote this on the table.
2- I’m going to give Mary a book or a pen
for her birthday.
 I’m going to give Mary either a book or
a pen for her birthday.


3. We’re going to Miami or New Orleans
for our vacation.
 We’re going to either Miami or New

lựa chọn (hoặc…hoặc…)


Another example:
Smoking is not allowed in this restaurant.
Drinking is not allowed in this restaurant.
1. Mr. John can neither smoke nor
drink in this restaurant.
2. Neither smoking nor drinking is allowed
in this restaurant.
⇒Neither … nor ...
(không …mà cũng không…)


* Exercise 3: Combine the sentences into
one, using “neither…nor…”
1. He doesn’t speak English. His children
don’t speak English.
2. She doesn’t enjoy hunting. She doesn’t
enjoy fishing.
3. Her roommates don’t know where she is.
Her brother doesn’t know where she is.
4. We didn’t go to the cinema. We didn’t play
football yesterday.
5. Lee isn’t going to study French. I’m not

going to study French.

 Neither he nor his children speak English.

 She enjoys neither hunting nor fishing.

 We neither went to the cinema nor play
football yesterday.
5- Lee isn’t going to study French. I’m not

 Neither Lee nor I am going to study French.

II. Cleft sentences in passive.
The students gave the teacher lots of flowers.
1.It was the teacher that was given lots of flowers by the students.

2.It was lots of flowers that were given to the teacher by the students.

It + is/was + subject focus + that + be + P2

Exercise 4:Change the sentences into cleft sentences
in the passive.
1. People talked a lot about his house.
It was his house that was talked a lot about.
2. His father bought him a bicycle for his birthday.
It’s a bicycle that was bought for him for his birthday by his father.
3. She frightened the children.
It was the children who/ that were frightened.
4. He described his hometown in his novel.
It was his hometown that was described in his novel.
5. The pedestrian asked the policeman for direction to the post
office.
It was the policeman that was asked for direction to the
post office by the pedestrian.
