TEACHING WARM- UP IN ENGLISH
A - PROBLEM
Although it needs a lot of time to lead- in new lessons,it is very important
because this is a starting time to the teacher to carry out when coming to the
classroom starting for a lesson.These activities have training purposes such as:
-Stable layer students have time to make the aquaintance of the new lesson


(example :when having changes about time,spaces,place,or class situations to a
new lesson or a new teacher ,when students have a short break ,students go to
class late or chatting with their friends so they have not got ready to concentrate
on their lesson)
-Preparation about psychology ,knowledge for a new lesson.
- To enlarge available students’knowledge .
- Help students to use old knowledge with the new one.
- Bring about happy for the new lesson.
Besides,with nature of the foreign language lesson ,warm-up activities have
importance like as a part of the lesson .It is very difficult or not carry out to the
next steps if the teacher doesn’t teach warm –up .Concretely,these activities
play a role to make situations for presentation of the lesson or make a chance
or a purpose to teaching activity,necessary parts to high communication.
With significance above ,when the teacher intends to do what he or she always
makes a question for what? for what purpose? and whether do that can gain the
purpose or the result or not?
So,warm-up activities are not only for delighted,for colourful but also for
integral part of the lesson.The way to lead-in with a good method decides the
result of all lessons.
From the real situations above I deccide to write my experience:”teaching
warm-up in English”.

I-Reality of study problem
1- Real situation
- Leading-in by the work such as checking old lesson,correcting homework,
mark and check about hard-working students we really realize it makes the
atmosphere boring and not bring advantage environment for studying. It is
also the way to stable layer terribly and from an ineffective warm-up affects

the result of the students lead-in inexactly purpose,requirement of the
lesson’s content.It wastes a lot of time or not bring effect.
- It is very important and significant for students to make situation questions
or pictures and prepare psychology ,knowledge to a new lesson . According
to purpose and content of the lesson ,the teacher can choose suitable
activities and techniques .The teacher can use way to check old lesson
indirectly based on activities and exercises with purpose two but he or she
can point if he or she wants (with students’ answer)
- Checking about hard-working students we can carry out any time ,the best
time is at the end of the lesson .

With the result above I find that the content of my topic is suitable and
necessary for students and the new methods with” students play a central role”
nowadays.
B. Solving problem
I- Solutions
1-To make the advantage environment
- Making active and sure situation for students by activities such as presenting
by herself or himself, greeting students,chatting, telling stores...
- Concentrating on paying attention,stable layer,cheering students up by a study
activity like:
- Listening a short lesson.
- Observing the pictures,asking and answering about the pictures.
- Explaining a quiz.
- Playing a foreign language.
- Doing a vocabulary exercise.
- Changing teaching warm-up.
2-Preparing psychology and knowledge for the new lesson.
- Exploiting general knowledge by asking eliciting or brainstorming.
- Relating with the old lesson problems to the new lesson by different ways
such as:
- Asking a question.
- Assigning exercises about the content of the old lesson related.

- Using one in excited activities and stable layer,old knowledge and content of
the lesson.
- Making circumstance,situation with communication for the next activities of
the lesson.We can use:
- Visual aids (pictures,photos....)

- Real story or man made.
- Short readings.
- Exercies or questions.
- In reality activities and techniques are used to the opening can satisfy different
purposes. The activities are written for purepose two ,for purpose one and on
the contrary.
Therefore,the best way to lead-in we can do with series of teaching we can
carry out at the same time with a lot of different duties which are given for the
opening.
Example:After coming to class the teacher can start by giving the problem or
questions for students to answer and exploit all the students’knowledge
(brainstorming) related to the old and the new lesson .From that the teacher
makes students pay attention,bring about excited for the lesson,stable
layer,check , revise old lessons and help students to prepare their psychology
and necessary knowledge to the new lesson at the same time.
3- Some examples about teaching warm-up
Example 1:
UNIT 4: Special education
A. Reading: Lớp 10 chương trình chuẩn
Warmer: Giáo viên cho học sinh xem một đoạn phim hoặc một vài bức tranh về
trường giáo dục đặc biệt ( giành cho trẻ khuyết tật )

Học sinh xem tranh và trả lời các câu hỏi:
(1) who are they ?
(2) where are they ?
(3) what are they doing ?

-Example 2:

UNIT 7: THE MASS MEDIA
C. LISTENING: Lớp 10 chương

trình chuẩn
Warmer:

- Giáo viên yêu cầu học sinh đóng

sách.

- Giáo viên giới thiệu cho học sinh xem một bức hình vẽ Radio và yêu
cầu học sinh trả lời câu hỏi:
(1) what is it ? - It's a radio
(2) what is it used for ? - to listen to news, music

(3) How often do you listen to radio ?
(4) How many hours per week do you listen to it ?
(5) what topics do you like listening to and why ?


Giáo viên dẫn vào bài:

- Example 3: UNIT 8: VILLAGE
A. Reading: Lớp 10 chương trình chuẩn
Warmer:

- Giáo viên yêu cầu học sinh đóng sách.
- Giáo viên giới thiệu một ô chữ còn bỏ trống yêu cầu học sinh tim ra

từ đó


Giáo viên dẫn vào bài: VILLAGE

Example 4: UNIT 10: CONSERVATION
A. Reading: Lớp 10 chương trình chuẩn
Warmer:

- Giáo viên yêu cầu học sinh đóng sách.
- Giáo viên giới thiệu cách làm.

 Brain storming: put the suitable words into the empty boxes

- Giáo viên cho đáp án (Đề nghị: pollution, floods).


Giáo viên hỏi:

(1) what are some global problems ?
(The extinction of plants and animals, pollution, floods, forest fire)
(2) what need we do to solve these ploblems ?
(planting trees, preventing globle warming, conservation)
- Giáo viên giới thiệu về từ CONSERVATION bằng cách nêu câu hỏi:
a) what is conservation ?


Conservation is the protection of natural things, such as plants and animals

b) Do we need to protect plants and animals ?
why ? or why not ?



Giáo viên giới thiệu bài mới: CONSERVATION
Example 5:

UNIT 4:VOLUNTEER WORK

A .READING : Lớp 11 chương trình chuẩn
Warmer :
- Học sinh đóng sách.
- Giáo viên nêu yêu cầu.

- Watch the video clip or pictures and answer the questions.
- Giáo viên cho học sinh xem một đoạn phim ngắn hay vài hình ảnh(có chứa
những nội dung trong phần trả lời dưới đây) và nêu câu hỏi:
1-who are they?
2-Where are they?
3-What are they doing?
- Học sinh trao đổi nhanh trong nhóm và trả lời.
Answers:
1- They are college students/ high school students/office workers.
2- They are at a remote village.
3- They are giving classes to children/repairing roads/ houses/ giving medical
services.
T: Do they get paid for their work?
T: No, they are doing something without having any kinds of payment.

so we can say that they are doing VOLUNTEER WORK.

WARM-UP: Giáo viên giới thiệu bài mới bằng cách sử dụng tranh
Giáo viên yêu cầu học sinh nhìn tranh và trả lời câu hỏi:

1. What animals can you see in these pictrures?
2. Where do these animals often live?
3. What would happen if their habitats were destroyed ?
.........> Giáo viên dẫn vào bài mới :NATURE IN DANGER

A: READING :Lớp 10- Chương trình chuẩn
WARM-UP: Giáo viên sử dụng tranh ảnh và tên của các nhà khoa học nổi tiếng,yêu
cầu học sinh dán tên phù hợp với tranh.......> Học sinh đoán chủ đề của bài...> Giáo
viên dẫn vào bài mới: PEOPLE’S BACKGROUND..

C- Conclusion and suggestion
I- Conclusion
- I have taught English in Ngoc lac high school for many years and I have
summarized my experiences above I briefly conclude:
1- Teaching warm-up is very necessary for the changing methods
nowadays.specially in teaching English.

2- teaching warm-up is an effective step to attract all students to take part in the
positive studying activities,studentsare active to receive knowledge and make
students increase their abilities and independent activities,specially ,using
question techniques eliciting usually causes students more excited.
II- Suggestion
Experts, educational specialists should study, issue visual AIDS,documents for
subjects specially English to do research and use them in their teaching,using
teaching warm-up more colourful and many sides.
I ’m looking forward to the Master of ngoc lac High School and Educational
Council agree with my experiences and it can become a good method to use.
