Statistics…what is it?
Statistics is the study of the collection, organization, analysis,
interpretation, and presentation of data. It deals with all
aspects of this, including the planning of data collection in
terms of the design of surveys and experiments
Three uses for statistics
Describe (Descriptive Statistics)
Summarize data
Graphically
Through formulas and tables
Infer (Inferential Statistics)
Use data from a small number of observations
to draw conclusions about the larger group
Improvement (Process Studies)
Use data from past experience to help predict
expected outcomes at a different time or place
or to direct action to influence future outcomes

good.
– Be sure our data is valid and reliable
– Be sure we have the right type of data
– Be sure statistical tests are applied
appropriately
– Be sure the results are interpreted correctly
