CONTENT
1. Objectives and research object
1.1. Objectives
The thesis is analyzing and clarifying real situation, factors and
orientation of changes in traditional culture of Thai people in Mai Chau
District, Hoa Binh Province during tourism development. The result will be
considered as a basis for proposing recommendations and help policy makers
to propose solutions for sustainable development.
2.2. Research object
The research object of the thesis is the traditional cultural change of Thai
people in Mai Chau, Hoa Binh in tourism development.
2. Methodology
In the thesis, culturological method and interdisciplinary approach are
applied to review the change in traditional culture of Thai people in Mai
Chau. Quantitative and Qualitative method combine and support for each
other during study period, including: analysis -synthesis, sociological
investigation, in-depth interview and ethnological fieldwork.
3. Key findings and conclusions
3.1. Key findings
- The thesis clarified real situation and method of traditional culture
change of Thai people in Mai Chau District, Hoa Binh Province in the context
of tourism development.



- The thesis pointed out factors and causes of culture change of Thai
people in Mai Chau, Hoa Binh in the context of tourism development.
- The thesis determined change orientations and concerned issues
related to traditional culture change of Thai people in Mai Chau, Hoa Binh in
the context of tourism development
3.2. Conclusions
Results from analysis has contributed a part in testing theoretical points
in the thesis, research hypothesis and answering research question posed in
the introduction of this thesis.
- As statements of researchers, from Karl Marx to Daniel Bell, socioeconomic development and superior of economic - politic factors may cause
culture change. The thesis focused on changes in traditional culture of Thai
people in the context of tourism development.
- Which is a culture change due to impacts of local tourism and
economic development.
- During the tourism development in Mai Chau, Hoa Binh, it is
communication and exchange between tourists and Thai people in Mai Chau
that leads to a significant change in traditional culture. This also demonstrated
that arguments including culture exchange and acculturation which are
considered as basis in this thesis is correct.
- The tourism development in Mai Chau indicated that traditional culture
values of Thai people have been lost in oblivion due to excessive exploitation. A
tourism development without planning and strategies may lose traditional culture
of Thai people. This has demonstrated that sustainable tourism development
applying in the thesis when carrying out a study on interaction between local
tourism development and traditional culture preservation of Thai people in Mai
Chau, Hoa Binh is correct and reflects the reality.
- During existence and development, Thai people in Mai Chau has
created a rich culture with specific characteristics of Thai people and Mai



Chau. The rice farming culture carried out in valley and harmonious with the
nature has been long-standing. The culture brings specific characteristics of
salvage, adaptation with natural conditions and communitarianism of Thai
people in Mai Chau. That culture is considered as not only a nutrient
sustaining life of Thai people and ensuring their existence and development
but also an important power for development of Thai people and Mai Chau.
- Tourism is an extremely important economic activity in Mai Chau,
Hoa Binh. Research result, however, showed that traditional culture of Thai
people has changed during tourism development in Mai Chau. Thai culture
has acquired specific features from other cultures to supplement and diversify
its tradition. On the other hand, changes in Thai culture appeared the
manifestation of traditional culture loss.
- In the context of tourism development, traditional culture of Thai
people in Mai Chau has changed in form of materials and spirit. Among them,
cultural factors in material form has more significant change. This change is
caused by tourism development, as well as cultural exchange and
acculturation of tourists. That change occurred in two forms: Thai people has
initiatively acquired new factors from cultures of tourists to create a change in
their traditional culture; besides, they are compulsory to change some
characteristics of their traditional culture to satisfy tourism.
- Factors impacting to the change in traditional culture of Thai people
in Mai Chau in the context of tourism development include: policy, exchange
and communication with tourism; psychology, role of Thai people in Mai
Chau in development of local tourism. Change in traditional culture of Thai
people in Mai Chau has been affected by many causes, including both
subjective and objective reasons.
- Change in traditional culture of Thai people in the context of local
tourism development has taken place in three orientations: Renovation of
cultural values to serve tourism activities; oblivion orientation; restore,



preservation and conservation of traditional values to develop tourism
activities. These orientations consist of both positive and negative factors.
- In the context of tourism development, many issues related to change
in traditional culture of Thai people in Mai Chau have been proposed. They
are: values Imbalance in exploitation of cultural values to develop tourism
and preserve cultural of Thai people; Role of Thai people in preservation of
preserve cultural; Role of environmental and legal factors in preservation and
development of community culture.
