In this life …
When things are harsh …
When times fly so fast that we barely have time to enjoy ourselves…
When people rushes down crowded streets, worrying and thinking about businesses,
relationships and money…
Have you ever…
Halted a second to think, to feel and to sympathize with those who are much more
unfortunate than you, with those who are mentally and physically hurt and depressed,…
Just so you would understand that there are so many lives out there that need your help,
your care and your love….?
We, 6 teenagers though young, lack of experiences but still, we want to deliver you this
clip because with all our sincere, we believe that somewhere deep inside the heart of each
and everyone of you, there is a place for those children that have to leave their parents,
their friends, schools and teachers, children that every day have to suffer the pain from
illness, children that we still see smiling today would be gone forever tomorrow…
And, somewhere deep inside your heart, there are enough love to share with them all…
Among dozens of cancers known, blood cancer might be the one of the most malignant
cancer diseases. It is reported annually that tens of thousands of people diagnosed with
this disease. The percentage for incidence of blood cancer over 100000 males is 10.2%
and 5.8% over 100000 females. Among those suffering from blood cancer every year, the
number of sick children accounts for about 10%. Exceptionally in Vietnam, blood cancer,
developing more especially in children, tended to rise rapidly. Cancer treatment centers
have seen blood disease patients occupying more than half of their facility, unfortunately
with a majority of very young patients.
Signs that may indicate leukemia are quite similar to those of anemia, such as pallor,
fever, ease colds, anorexia, etc. Additionally, patients will often get continuous sweating
at night, a symptom clearly showing erythrocytes are being attacked. All of these signs
will occur when the number of white blood cell in bone marrow, “headquarters” of red
blood cells, increases rapidly, when leukemia has officially started attacking the body.
However, it is fortunate for us to have an opportunity to control this evil cancer early,
since leukemia, different to other cancers, leukemia will reveal itself very clearly once it

has declared offending our body, while other cancers, especially ones with tumors,
usually mask themselves silently before actually vandalizing the body. Therefore, the
detection of leukemia will be carried out with more ease, which would positively
contribute to the chances of success during treatment. But, sadly and ironically, there is
no permanent treatment for leukemia. This means that it is only possible to prolong the
lives of patients and they will never fully recover from illness, for we have not found an
effective way to control and stop the increase of white blood cells. Nevertheless, thanks
to science’s non-stop efforts, there are still several hopeful therapies. Most typical among
these, if not saying most promising, is to replace the patient’s bone marrow in order to
prevent the highest possibility of leukemia growth. In addition, the method of
chemotherapy is also widely used to treat leukemia. Results from chemotherapy have a

certain number of prospects, but also come with many consequences. These extremely
costly chemo doses, used in relieving pain and eliminate cancer cells, if used overdose
will expose our body to more weaknesses, degrading our resistance ability - a very
malicious thing for child patients. A science research also indicates that one of the most
effective methods employed is to keep the children’s spirit optimistic, cheerful as well as
passing on belief of life’s miracles to them.
Even until now, the deep origin of leukemia still remains a challenging quest to the
world. It is only known that the most prominent causes for this deadly “parasite” disease
are elements from the environment, such as exposure to radiation or chemical hazards,
etc. There are plenty cancer-specialized hospitals with sufficient means of treatment in
Vietnam, but the greatest difficulty lies within the patients themselves. Senior and wellexperienced doctors say, patients only come for treatment when the disease has turned too
severe. Economic condition also plays a vital role, as the cost for general treatment, not
excluding medication, never lies under 30 million VND. More ironically, most patients
are often deeply disadvantaged, not mentioning the fact that many of them are at the age
of school children.
Nowadays, in this world that we’re living in, people are becoming more selfish, and
sadly, care less about blood cancer. Yet there still are some organizations such as “Ước

mơ của Thúy” (Thúy’s Dream), “UNICEF”, “Melinda & Gates”, charity meals for the
patients and their families as well as scientist on all over the world are trying their best
each day to find out a way to save the kid’s lives. Each day, these people would lit up the
children’s hope, the hope of going to school, of a better life in a better world, in which
they wouldn’t have to suffer the pain they’re going through.
Although we have studied and researched a lot about Blood Cancer, still it affects us
strongly when we first arrived at the petriadic hematology department at the Hematology
and blood transfusion hospital hospital. Not until we saw how naïve the kids were, how
painful the cancer was and how worried and broken hearted their parents were that we
truly understood and sympathized with the children. Their dreams were simple: “I wish I
could go to school” or “I wish I could go through this”, “If there is miracle, I would wish
that the world didn’t have such thing as cancer”… yet hard to come true. We found
ourselves speechless, useless, helpless and powerless… we wanted to save the children
from pain, to bring them happiness and to give them a life like every other kids… but we
couldn’t. All we could possibly do is to try to make their life easier through the fairy
tales, the small toys. We and the children, together we folded the magic balls that carry
their plain dreams. Despite the fact that they soon would be gone forever, they are very
optimistic - in their own way, and there are always laughter in the small rooms in the
hospital. Little did we know, that behind those laughter are the gaunt faces of their
parents, their families, who are counting down each day they have left with their child…
No one could possibly leave the hospital without tears in their eyes and aches in their
hearts…

Though their lives are short, though their destiny are light, though they have to suffer
through so much pain, physically and mentally, deep inside these children’s heart is a
flame that would shine forever, a flame of hopes, of dreams to have a life like any
others… dreams though simple but would never come true…
Be their sunlight
warm their hearts

share their pain
show them you care so much about them that you would spend each night praying for
them…
make their life better…
with the your love for them, with the kindness of a true Vietnamese….!
Each and everyone of us is a separate individual, but we could only exist in this
community with the help and serve of the whole human society. We support each other to
live and we live to support others. Together, we would build up a better world.
