H o w t h e P o r t u g u e s e c a m e to b e th e first E u r o p e a n s to e s ta b lis h r e g u la r

language, c o n d u c te d by sp e cia lists in linguistics w h o w o u ld settle lo ca lly , c tu ld
ac h ie v e m e a n in g fu l results. T h e n o b le m e rc h a n ts , for the sake o f th e ir b u s in e s s success,
e n c o u ra g e d the p rie s ts w h o tra v e lle d w ith th e m to h e lp in th e c o m m u n ic a t io n 'vith

local authorities in o r d e r to o b tain susta in ab le c o m m e rc ia l relations. A p a rt o f the g u n s
ac h ie v e d in th ese lucrative tra v e ls w e r e in fact d o n a te d to th e relig io u s O r d e rs , a b r m
o f p a rticipation in the e x p e n s e s w ith the b u ild in g o f n e w c h u rc h e s o f M a c a o o r with the
e s ta b lis h m e n t o f n e w relig io u s m issio n s. In th at respect, it c o n s titu te d a pow erful
incentive in the strife fo r learning oriental languages.

1634, in Hạ Noi, and Father Gaspar de Amaral needed to announce to the Superiors this fact,
