English is spoken as a first language by just under 400 million people in the United States, the United
Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc. It comes after Mandarin and then Spanish as the
language with the most native speakers.
However, English is learned most widely in the world as a second or foreign language. Around a billion
people all over the world use English not as their second or foreign language. All its speakers put together,
English is probably the most commonly spoken language in the world.
The question, though, is not actually the number of speakers; English is the language of commerce,
international communication and science all over the world. It is one of the official languages of the United
Nations, of the European Union, and of many other international organizations. English has now become a key
language in the world through newspapers, books, the telegraph, the telephone, radio, television, and the
Internet as well as the rise of the United States as a superpower.
