Philosophy of Education in Japan

The fundamental principle of education of Japan is in the perfection of
personality as a human being. Education emphasizes these points; respect for a
human being, social training, and efficiency in practical life.


Japan's educational objective
The Law defines the central aim of education as: “the full development of
personality, striving for the rearing of people, sound in mind and body, who shall love
truth and justice, esteem the value of the individual, respect labour and have a deep sense
of responsibility, and be imbued with an independent spirit, as builders of a peaceful
state and society.”


How do Japanese school operate?








New school years starting every April
An average school day on weekdays lasts for 6 hours
Summer vacation: 6 weeks, Winter and Spring vacation: 2 weeks
Every class has its own classroom, 1 teacher teaches all of subjects ( elementary)
One class: under 40 students

From grade 1 to grade 3, children will not have a quiz because the Ministry of Education believes that they need
to learn to be a human before they can learn to genious.

Some interesting facts about Japanese schools




Nearly all junior high schools require their students to wear a school uniform
In public elementary and junior high schools school lunch (kyuushoku) is provided on a
standardized menu, and is eaten in the classroom.




Students don’t skip classes in Japan, nor do they arrive late
Students in Japan have a strong sense of belonging in school, they don’t feel like outsiders, nor
do they feel left out.



Students in Japan actually feel happy in school (85 %).

what the teacher lectured.
