My favourite boss was a woman who was younger than me. She had not had a formal university
education. She went straight from school to a travel firm in Cardiff, which is the capital of Wales.
The firm, which organised business travel and holidays for top executives, was one of the biggest travel

firms in the UK. One of the top executives, who met her when she was organising his firm’s company
trip, was really impressed with her. He hired her as his PA, which meant she was able to accompany him
around the world. When he retired she succeeded him as Chief Executive and the company went from
strength to strength.
She was a leader who was fair but firm and was willing to deal with difficult issues immediately. Her
employees, who all spoke very highly of her, were very motivated. She had a clear strategy for the

Her husband, who worked with her in the business, described her as a superwoman. ‘She has enormous
