Items in a Series
Commas separate words or phrases listed in
a series. When and or or precedes the last
word or phrase in a series, a comma is
placed before and or or.


I purchased a rug, a sofa, and a lamp for my
new apartment.




You can contact me by letter, by phone, or by email.

Introductory Phrases and Clauses
An introductory phrase or clause is usually
followed by a comma.

Conjunctions
A comma separates two independent clauses
that are joined by a conjunction such as and,
but, or, and nor. The comma is placed before
the conjunction.



The architect submitted a proposal, but she was
not selected for the project.



Write your name at the top, and wait for further
instructions.
