Surviving on a desert island
Many of us occasionally think about living on a desert island,
but few ever have the chance to experience it. In the TV series
‘Survivor’, sixteen people do just that. For forty days they live
together and compete against each other on a tropical island,
and at the end of the contest the winner receives one million
pounds. This is an extract from the diary of one of the
contestants, Mike Foster.

think

‘Having said that, there are real difficulties. We all miss people
back home – we’re so far away from everything here – and we
have disagreements and arguments. I’m finding it hard to live
without simple things, like soap and shampoo and a comfortable
bed, and we’re having some problems finding food, too.
Catching fish is quite hard, especially when the sea is rough.
We’re getting a bit better at fishing but I have dreams about
eating hamburgers or chocolate biscuits!

there are moments when you feel like staying here forever.

Job hunting on the Internet

1 After we (take) ____________ our exams, we went
travelling for a year.

2 While Julie was reading the newspaper, she (see)
______________ an interesting job advertisement.
3 Emily gave in her notice because she (not get)
____________ a pay-rise.
4 Nobody was in the living room when Sam got home. His
parents and his sisters (go) ____________ to bed.
5 Sorry I’m late. The train (not leave) ____________ until
6.30.

A recent survey asked students in their last year of school or
university how they were looking for their first job. Their
answers were many and varied. However, those who were used
to the Internet were having more success than those who were
employing more traditional methods, such as looking up
advertisements in the newspaper.
The possibilities on the net seem almost endless. By simply
typing the word jobs into a search engine, we got a list of nearly
thirty million websites coming up on the screen. With so many
to choose from, it would be impossible to find anything suitable,
so the next step is to look for something more specific. You
have to limit your search to the area you want to work in.

Complete the sentences. Use the past simple and the past
perfect.

/5

3

As an example, we chose law. Limiting the search meant that

‘only’ 196,000 websites appeared, and the search had taken just
0.46 seconds. The first website on the list was advertising 339
different jobs. As you can see, there were plenty of options.

Complete the sentences. Use the correct form of used to,
be used to or get used to.
1 I ______________ getting up early for work – it’s no
problem at all.
2 When Joanna first went to school, she ______________
cry every morning.
3 It took us a long time to ______________ our new
teacher.
4 It ______________ be easy to find jobs in this town, but
now a lot of people are unemployed.
5 They quickly ______________ life in the city. It was
much more exciting than living in a village.

Obviously, a lot of the available jobs are not open to school or
university leavers – they call for higher qualifications or more
experience. On top of this, there are factors that you must
consider yourself, such as where you want to work and what
salary you are prepared to accept. But there are lots of jobs out
there, and it’s certainly a good idea to look at the possibilities on
the Internet when you’re searching for work.

People have always been attracted to rock-climbing and plenty
of accidents have resulted from this hobby. Seventeen-year-old
Wendy Sherlock has fallen three times without any injury while
rock-climbing, but after her latest accident last Saturday, she is
lucky to be alive.
Wendy has been in hospital for two days after an eight-metre
fall from a rocky cliff in the Sanderson National Park. She
doesn’t remember much about the accident, and it’s not
surprising considering her injuries.
‘I’ve got quite a bad head injury – that’s the worst thing,’

Wendy explained. ‘But I’ve also broken my arm and a couple of
my ribs and there’s a problem with my left shoulder.’ She
doesn’t know how long she will have to stay in hospital, as the
doctors haven’t told her yet. However, she is realistic about her
recovery. ‘I’ll be in here for a while, because I hit my head

El Niño
What has caused the recent tropical storms, floods and droughts

Normally, winds blow across the southern Pacific Ocean from
east to west. In an El Niño year, they blow in the opposite
direction, bringing a current of warm water flowing back
towards South America. Coastal waters become two to three
degrees warmer. Sea levels along the South American coast can
rise by as much as fifty centimetres and this causes widespread
flooding. At the same time, South-east Asia and Australia are
left without the rainfall that they need.
Until recently, El Niño has usually arrived every five to eight
years and it has lasted, on average, for about eighteen months.
But now this pattern seems to be changing. El Niño comes more
often, and it lasts longer. Many scientists believe that this
pattern will continue in the future. According to their
predictions, El Niño will bring more rainfall and flooding to
California and South America, greater famine to countries like
Indonesia and worse droughts and forest fires to Australia.

They found work easily enough, but it wasn’t exactly the type

one evening, Volkan saw a small advertising poster stuck on a
wall. It was asking for people to work as cleaners and it had a
phone number. They rang, expecting to hear about a job
cleaning offices. Instead, the manager of the cleaning company
employed them as cleaners of the city’s largest clock – Big Ben.
Volkan and Emir had never had a similar job before, but their
boss wasn’t worried about that. He simply wanted them to start
as soon as possible. His two previous cleaners had left suddenly
the week before, and he was desperate to find replacements. The
next morning, the two students were working 100 metres off the
ground beside the river at Westminster.

however. Not today or any day if you suffer from agoraphobia.
Pauline Proctor is one such sufferer. Her fear of being in open
spaces and public places means that she has had to stay inside
her house for the past four months.
Pauline used to go out to work, but she began to feel more and
more nervous about walking in the streets. She became terrified
of travelling on buses or trains, and her feelings of panic made it
extremely difficult to go shopping or visit her friends. At work
she found it impossible to speak in a meeting or go out for lunch

He made up his mind to try to produce one of these small

The technology was a challenge, but Philip was an electronics

A wasted journey
Although he had broken his leg a few weeks earlier, Kevin
Crowther was still looking forward to the Glastonbury music
festival. His family told him not to go and suggested that he sold
his ticket on the Internet, but Kevin was determined not to miss
the festival. He set out for Glastonbury early on Thursday
morning.
He had already decided that the best way to get there was by
hitchhiking. If you held out your thumb, a kind-hearted driver
would stop and you could reach your destination without
spending any money. Kevin was sure that his broken leg would
help – drivers would be more willing to stop for him if they saw
that he had an injury.

He was wrong. He waited for three hours until a woman offered
him a lift. Unfortunately, her car broke down ten minutes later,
and it was another hour before a lorry driver picked him up and
agreed to take him to Glastonbury. Kevin was relieved, as his
leg was hurting and he was feeling tired and hungry. But the
journey was unbearably slow. The road was busy and they were
held up several times in traffic jams.

Fame and privacy

One drawback of fame might be a lack of privacy – but not
every famous person has this problem. The fame of successful
writers creates less pressure than that of pop stars, because
although we know their names, we may not recognize their
faces.
The author of the best-selling Harry Potter books, J. K.
Rowling, has appeared in public more often than most writers to
give interviews, sign books and accept awards. When she makes

a public appearance, she’s met by crowds of young fans who
want to get her autograph. But Joanne Rowling doesn’t see
herself as a star. ‘It’s entirely possible for me to lead a very
normal life,’ she said. ‘Kids don’t turn up to see me personally.
I think I could be man, woman, old, young. I hope and believe
that the books are the attraction, not me personally.’

Earlier this year, the star footballer Peter Robson
(1) ______________ leave the pitch when he was injured in
a game against Liverpool. For the following three months he
(2) ______________ play football because of his injury, but
now he’s training again. ‘We (3) ______________ worry
about Peter any more,’ his manager said. ‘We’re confident
that he
(4) ______________ join the team next Saturday, although
the fans (5) ______________ expect too much from him in
his first game.’

3

J. K. Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter novel in a small flat
where she was bringing up her baby daughter Jessica. She now
earns more money than any other woman in Britain. She enjoys
the benefits of her success, but she would hate to lose her
freedom and privacy. In a recent interview she explained that
she worked best alone, and that it was important for her to
protect Jessica’s privacy as well as her own. The best moment
of her career was not in the camera lights – it was when she

heard that her first book had been accepted by a publisher:
‘What a moment! I walked on air for days.’

Look-alike
If you’re out shopping one day and think you see David
Beckham, the England footballer, you should look again before
you get too excited. It might not be David Beckham – it could
be Mark Lloyd.
Mark, who is employed as an assistant in an electrical shop,
looks very similar to the famous football star. ‘People are
amazed when they come into the shop,’ he said. ‘Some of them
really think it’s David Beckham who is selling them their
washing machine!’ He is often stopped in the street by fans who
ask him for his autograph, and he is used to people looking at
him and waving to him when he goes out.

‘The similarity wasn’t obvious when Beckham got his head
shaved or when he had short spiky hair. My boss wouldn’t have
been too pleased if I had had my hair cut like that,’ Mark said.
‘But these days I can see we do look alike.’ Mark has the
footballer’s blond good looks and the same smile. He is almost
as fit and well-built as Beckham because he loves adventure
sports. ‘I compete in the national windsurfing competitions, and
you have to be very fit for that,’ he said.

We asked if there were any advantages in having a famous face.
Mark told us that he had been offered money to appear as a
Beckham look-alike at public events and in TV advertisements.
‘I might accept one of these jobs some day,’ he said. ‘It could be
fun, and I would probably earn quite a lot of money. But if they

Marrying for money?
Matt Dawson seems a very happy 25-year-old, and he has
reason to be. He has been married for three years to Linda
Morroni. She is nineteen years his senior and millions of
dollars richer.

catch

They met six weeks before they got married, at a casino in
Las Vegas where Matt was working. At the time, Matt
claimed that he fell in love with her as soon as he saw her,
but all the signs of love point to Linda’s healthy bank

account. Recent revelations confirm this theory.
‘I was working a 50-hour week in a job I hated. It was
unbelievably boring. Then Linda came along and started to
throw her money about on the casino table. We got on
really well, but when I asked her out, I was pretty surprised
that she didn’t turn me down. To be honest, although I
liked her as a person, part of the attraction was that she had
so much money,’ Matt confessed. ‘That’s still the case, but
it doesn’t seem to bother her.’

Matt has a relaxed attitude towards their relationship. ‘Who
knows what will happen? We just take each day as it
comes. We haven’t got any children so we can do what we
like. We do lots of travelling – we’re planning a two-week
cruise in the Caribbean next month. We buy expensive
clothes and eat in fancy restaurants. When life’s this good,
why worry about the future?’

The history of video games
Just over fifty years ago, a young American engineer by
the name of Ralph Baer was asked to build the bestever television set. Baer was very talented and he didn’t
find the task difficult. He had wanted to go further than
his original objective and incorporate some kind of
game into the TV set. Unfortunately, however, his
superiors turned down the idea and he never got the
chance.
Two decades later, Ralph Baer’s idea, which had
seemed unrealistic in the 1950s, became a reality. A
team of engineers carried on his work, and in 1972 they
produced the first video games. These were extremely
simple by today’s standards. The first video tennis
game, for example, consisted of one short white line on
either side of the black screen and a white dot moving
from side to side to represent the ball.

A: What (1 you / do) ___________________all

B: In the park. They (3 build) ___________________

5 Sam’s teacher was cross with him because he left /

The simplicity of these early games would not be
satisfying enough for today’s more sophisticated
consumers. Since the 1970s, computer games have been
getting more and more complicated. The graphics are
more realistic because they are computer-generated, and
a great deal more money is spent on them by both
customers and manufacturers. The games have also
become more violent; in fact, they are often blamed for
the rise in teenage violence in some countries.
And what about the companies involved in developing
computer games? You might be surprised to find out
that Atari, in spite of its Japanese-sounding name, is
actually an American company; that it was an
American, too, who set up the Japanese company Sega;
and that Nintendo, despite its modern image, has been
trading for more than a hundred years.

On your next summer holiday, will it be hotter than in
past years? If you go skiing next winter, will you be
skiing on less snow? If the answer is ‘yes’ to either of
these questions, then you will have been directly
influenced by the global climatic change known as the
greenhouse effect.
The greenhouse effect, contrary to general belief, is in
fact a very necessary natural phenomenon. If the
Earth’s atmosphere did not keep in any of the heat we
get from the sun, our planet would be far too cold for
us, and for any animals and plants, to live. The
problem, however, is that pollution has changed the
atmosphere in the last hundred years or so, and this has
caused the greenhouse effect to increase too much.

3 I forgot to post / posting the job application and

4 She’s very independent. She enjoys to live / living
on her own.
5 Can you imagine not to be / being able to see?

There have been many rises and falls in temperature
throughout the history of our planet, for example during
the last Ice Age. But the big problem now is one of
time. Today’s temperature changes are happening very
quickly. Calculations over the past century have shown
that the average global temperature has risen about half
a degree Celsius. That might sound like a small change
in a long time, but our planet and all its inhabitants are
used to changes over millions, not hundreds, of years.

/5
VOCABULARY

If we don’t take serious measures to stop this rise in

could.

step further.
Our mind is an amazing tool. As well as dealing with
reality, it can create the unreal through imagination.
Our imagination is often limited only because we don’t

new high-tech company is hoping to help.
‘I decided to investigate this area after seeing Total

says Charlie Boshell, founder of a new ‘virtual holiday’

Cricket – an incomprehensible sport

Complete the sentences. Use the correct passive form of
the verbs in the box.

Cricket is said to be the most English of sports, and it is
true that, in all but a few English-speaking countries, no
one has a clue how it is played.

1

Cricket was invented as an official sport long before
England’s other well-known sporting invention, football.
So why has football become the world’s most popular sport
while cricket is played only in the Commonwealth – those
English-speaking countries that formed the old British
Empire? The answer may be found in the simplicity of
football and the complexity of cricket and, possibly more
importantly, in the time they take to play. Whereas a match
in most modern sports lasts a maximum of a few hours, an
international cricket match can take five days to complete,
and even then the final score is quite likely to be a draw.
Despite the time factor, cricket is popular in a number of
countries around the world, from Australia to India and
from South Africa to the Caribbean, so it must have some
attractive qualities. Luis, a Chilean living in England who
is interested in the sport, gave his opinion. ‘I would say
that cricket has a special appeal that other sports don’t
have. You don’t have to concentrate on the action from
start to finish of a match, and this usually makes it a
relaxing, friendly event. If it’s a sunny day and the teams
are playing well, I can’t think of a better way of spending
my time.’
