2.1 the Characteristic of
American business
a. The privately–owned and forprofit companies – True Business
When talking about business in
Americans, it is essential to become
familiar with two words: private and
profit
One of the most prominent example is
Apple Inc., formerly Apple Computer,
Inc. Apple is the world's largest

information technology company by
revenue and the world's second-largest
mobile phone manufacturer after
Samsung

b. Public, governmentowned-and-operated
institutions
On the contrary to those
privately owned, for-profit
business, there are also
public, governmentowned-and-operated
institutions. These
organizations and
institutions should not be
confused with businesses.
Americans often disagree
about the appropriate role
of government in the
economy

c. Non-profit
organizations
(NPO)
A nonprofit
organization or
NPO is an
organization that

does not distribute
its surplus funds to
individuals or
shareholders that
use these funds to
fund

2.2. Two kinds of American
Business
2.2.1. The
entrepreneur as hero
The entrepreneurs built
great industries out of very
little made them seem to
millions of Americans like
the heroes of the early
frontier days, who went into
the vast wilderness of the
United States and turned
forests into farms, villages,
and small cities. The
entrepreneur, like the
earlier hero of the frontier,
was seen as a rugged
individualist.

2.2.2. The organization Man/Woman as Hero
“The organization man/women” is seen as a less
perfect example of basic American values, but he

or she still commands great respect

situation in the present

Some American companies
have also started to outsource
their customer service and
technical support services to
countries such as India and
Ireland. American business has
become a part of a much larger
global economy.
Business and commerce is one
arena where the world is
increasingly “American.”

- The United States is the
world’s leading exporter and
importer, and its companies
spend more money
establishing and expanding
overseas operations than
those of any other nation.
- The United States cannot
compete with the abundant
supply of cheap labor that
exists in the countries of the
Pacific Rim and Latin America

American
Workforce

2.4.1 The changing in gender proportion.
- Before the 1960s
Traditionally, white males
have dominated American
business, earning the
highest salaries, achieving
the greatest successes, and
certainly wielding most of
the power, setting the
standards and the working
conditions for the rest of the
working population. Women
account for a small
percentage of workforces

- However times
are changing. First,
women are
accounting for a
high percentage in
the total number of
US workforce. The
Great Recession
accelerated a

profound economic
shift that has been
going on for years

2.4.2 The changing in
immigrant workforce

-

-

As enormous waves of
immigration during the last
century both augmented the
labor force and challenged
mechanisms of the labor
market
First, immigration Increases
the Supply of Labor. By far
the most important impact
immigration has on the
workforce is that it increases
the supply of labor
Second, immigration improves
technological innovation. Highskilled immigrant workers boost
innovation and in turn increase the
productivity and utility of their

surrounding workforce

3. In comparison to
Vietnam’s Business

3.1 The Characteristic of
Vietnam’s
Business
1.1. Private and comparison to Viet Nam’s
Communication:
Vietnam’s businesses
don’t often put emphasis
of individual outlook on
direct communication
with individuals. Unlike
America, Vietnamese
enterprises are likely not
giving any open door
policy. It is quite hard for
employees to approach
the boss with any
concerns, problems or
questions

Dress Code: Uniform

represent the company’s
image in Vietnam.

Management Style: In

Taking initiative: In Vietnam most
decisions are made by
committee. Individual
connections are not as important
as in many other Asian countries,
because no one holds absolute
power to make a decision.

Vietnam, the leader
plays an important role
in the business because
they are the only person
who can make decision
especially in important

3.1.2. Profit and comparison to
Viet Nam’s
It’s a big difference between Vietnamese and American economy,
Vietnamese
business is mixed economy, operating under the market mechanism.
Almost all
Vietnamese enterprises are small and medium enterprises. In America, the
private sector is the country's chief economic force meanwhile in Vietnam,
State
enterprise is the mainstream

3.2. The admiration for
successful individuals in
business and some typical
ones
Vietnamese admire the way a person can achieve these
things. They prefer businessman who become rich in
transparent way with his/her ability, and they doesn’t
appreciate people who is successful based on unfair
activities like using money or taking advantages of family
background, relationship, despite how rich this person is.
