Women won their independence years ago. After a long struggle, they now enjoy the
same educational opportunities as men in most parts of the world. They have proved
repeatedly that they are equal and often superior to men in almost every field. The
battle for recognition has been won, but it is by no means over. Men still carry on the
sex war because their attitude remains basically (1) ___. Even in the most
progressive societies, women continue to be regarded as (2) ____ citizens. However
much men sneer at women, their claims to superiority are not borne out by statistics.
Let's consider the matter of driving, for instance. We all know that women cause
fewer accidents than men. Women have succeeded in any job you care to name. As
politicians, soldiers, doctors, factory-hands, university professors, farmers, company
directors, lawyers, busconductors, scientists and presidents of countries they have
often (3)____. And we must remember that they frequently succeed brilliantly in all
these fields in addition to bearing and rearing 25 children.Yet men go on saying that
there are many jobs women can't do. Top-level political negotiation between
countries, business and banks and etc. are almost controlled by men, who guard
their so-called 'rights'. They shun real competition. They know in their hearts that
women are superior and they are afraid of being (4) ____ at their own game. One of
the most important tasks in the world is to achieve peace between the nations. You

can be sure that if women were allowed to sit round the conference table, they would
succeed brilliantly, as they always do, where men have failed for centuries. Some
things are too important to be left (5) ____ men.

Although most universities in the United States are on a semester system,
which offers classes in the fall and spring, some schools observe a quarter system
comprised of fall, winter, spring, and summer quarters. The academic year,
September to June, is divided into three quarters of eleven weeks each beginning in
September, January, and March: the summer quarter, June to August, is composed of
shorter sessions of vary length. There are several advantages and disadvantages to
the quarter system. On the plus side, students who wish to complete their degrees in
less than the customary four years may take advantage of the opportunity to study
year round by enrolling in all four quarters. In addition, although most students begin

their programs in the fall quarter, they may enter at the beginning of any other
quarters. Finally, since the physical facilities are kept in operation year round, the
resources are used effectively to serve the greatest number of students. But there
are several disadvantages as well. Many faculty complain that eleven-week term is
simply not enough for them to cover the material required by most college coursed.
Students also find it difficult to complete the assignments in such a short period of
time.In order to combine the advantages of the quarter system with those of the
semester system some colleges and universities have instituted a three-term
trimester system. In fourteen weeks, faculty and students have more time to cover
material and finish course requirements, but the additional term provides options for
admission during the year and accelerates the degree programs for those students
who wish to graduate early.

Brown bears are found in Alaska and western Canada. They are first cousins of
the grizzly, each belonging to the species Ursus arctos. The chief difference in them
is size, as brown bears on the average are slightly larger. A full-grown male may
weigh 1,500 pounds and stand 9 to 10 feet tall. Like bears everywhere they are
creatures of habit that tread the same trails year after year. Brown bears have three
gaits: an even, deliberate one that takes them over rough or boggy ground at a
steady clip, a quick shuffle, and a fast gallop. They are not only surprisingly fast, but
also, for such huge beasts, amazingly inclines. Fishing the streams in summer, they
pounce on swift-moving salmon and snatch them with almost simultaneous
movements of their paws and mouths. Brown bears are excellent swimmers and love
to loll and wallow in the water on warm days. They are also curious and playful. Most
