The pie chart below shows the main reasons why agricultural and becomes
less productive. The table shows how these causes affected three regions of
the world during the 1990s.
Summaries the information by selecting and reporting the main features,
and make comparison where relevant.

This is has been prepared by an examineras an example of a very good
answer. However, please note that this is just one example out many
possible approaches.

The pie chart shows that there are for main cause of farmiand becoming
degraded in the world today. Globally 65% of degradation is caused by too
much animals grazing and tree clearance consistuting 35% and 30%
respectively. A futher 28% of global degration is due to over – cultivation of
crops. Other causes account for only 7% collectively.
These causes affected different regions differently in the 1990s, with
Europe having as much as 9,8 % of degretion due to deforestation, while
the impact hof this on Oceania and North American was minimal, whith
only 1,7% and 0,2% of land affected respectively Europe, with the highest
overall percentage of land degraded ( 23%), also suffered from over
cultivation (7,7% ) and over- grazing (5,5% ). In contrast Oceania had 13%
of degraded famland and this was mainly due to over –grazing (11,3%).
North America had a lower propotion of degraded land at only 5% and the
main causes of this were over-cultivation (3,3%) and, to a tesser extent,
over –grazing (1,5%).
Overall, it is clear that Europe suffered more than farmland degradation
than the other regions, and the main cause there were doforestation and
over – cultivation

Some people think that parents should teach children how to be good

This is has been prepared by an examineras an example of a very good
answer. However, please note that this is just one example out many
possible approaches.

A child’s education has never been about learning information and basic
skills only, it has always incudes teaching the next generation how to be
good members of society. Therefore, this cannot be the responsibility of the
parents alone.
In order to e a good member of any society the individual must respect and
obey the roles of their community and share their value. Educating children
to understand the need to obey rules and respect other always begins in the
home and is widely thought to be the responsibility of parents. They will
certainly be the first to help children learn whtat is important in life how
they are expected to be have and what role they will play in their wold.

However, learning to understand and share the value system of a whole
society cannot be achieved just tip the ome. Once a child goes to school,
they are enerring a wider community where teachers and peers will have
just as much influence as their parents do at home. At school children will
exoerience working and living with people from a whole variety of
backgrounds from the wider society. This experience should teach them

how to co-operate with each other and how to contribute bto the life of
their community.

But to be a valuable member of any community is not like learning a simple
skill. It is something that an individual goes on learning throughout life and
it is the responsibility of every member of a society to take responsibility
for helping the younger generation to become active and able membes of
that society.
he three pie chart below show the changes in annual spending by a
particular UK school in 1981,1991 and 2001.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features,
and make comparisons where relevant.

The charts show how much a UK school spent on different running costs in
three separate years 1981, 1991 and 2001.
In all three years, the greatest expenditure was on staff salaries. But while
other workers salaries saw a fall from 28% in 1981 to only 15% of
spednding in 2001 teacher’s pay remained the biggest cost reaching 50%
of total spending in 1991 and ending at 45% in 2001.
Exdpenditure on resources such as books had increased nv to 20% by 1991
before decreasing to only 9% by the and of the period. In contrast the cost
of furniture and eqiupment saw an opposite trend. This cost decreased to

only 5% of total expenditure in 1991 but rose dramatically in 2001 when it
represented 23% of the school budget. Similarly, the cost of insurance saw
a rising trend , growing from only 2% to 8% by 2001.
Overall, teachers’ salaries constituted the largest cost to the school, and
while spending increased dramatically foer equipment and insurance, there

were correspoding drops in expenditure on things such as books and on
other workers’ salaries.

Nowadays the way many people interact with each other has changed
because of technology.
In what ways has technology affected the types of relationships people
make?
Has this become a positive or negative development?

his is an answer written by a candidate who achieved a Band 5.5 score.
Here is the examiner’s comment:
"The topic introduction has been copied from the task and is deducted from
the word count. This leaves the answer under length at 236 words, so the
candidates loses marks for this.

This answer addresses both questions, but the first is not well convered in
term of how actual relationships have changed. Nevertheless, there is a
clear opinion that the effects have been positive and relationships have
improved, with some relevant ideas to support this. There is a general
progression to the argument, with some effective use of time markers and
linkers. There is also some repetition, however. Paragraphing is not always
logical, and ideas are not always well linked. A range of vocabulary that is
relevant to the topic is used, including some precise and natural
experssions. There are quite a lot of mistakes in word form, word choice or
spelling, but these do usually reduce understading. A variety of sentence
types is used, but not always accurately. Errors in grammar and
punctuation are ditracting at times, but only rarely cause problems for the

reader."

Nowadays the way people interack with each other has chaged because of
technogy. Yes, the technology has changed the people’s interaction in very
enhanced manner.
Earlier people use to jwait and try to find easy wayt to contact their friends
or relackives leaving far. In past there was no quick there was no qickly
technology to contact or to establish any communication between one
person to another person. The Drawback with past communication

systems was that it were very slow and were time talking process such as
telegrams, letter etc. People used to afraid to write their personal feedbacs
or things to their love ones due to insecure medium of communication.
When it comes to professional leveldfhd, the privacy and accuracy should
be maintain but, to that time there were no secure communications.
Now the things have chaged around, people from far distance contact their
loves one in an easy and quick ways which improves the Interaction
between people to people, has improved because the people are equipped
with high-tec technology which enhances the communication. There are
many many medium which are available now such as Internet, Calling
Cards etc.
The technology has provided the mobility faster which help peple to tslk or
to interack at any time anywhere in the world.
People can contact their friend or relackives any time they want. It has
become so easier and friendly to be in touch with your freriends, relackives
even with the unknow people.
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and
pollution problems.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
What other measures do you think might be effective?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your
own knowledge or experience.

This model has been prepared by an examiner as an examiner as an
example of a very good answer. However, please note that this is just one
example out of many possible approaches.
********
There is no doubt that traffic and pollution from vehicles have become huge
problems, both in cities and on motorways everywhere. Solving these
problems is likely to need more than a simple rise in the price of petrol.
While it is undeniable that private car use is one of the main causes of the
increase in traffic and pollution higher fuel costs are unlikely to limit the
number of drivers for long. As this policy would also affect the cost of public
transport, it would be very unpopular with everyone who needs to travel on
the roads. But there are various other measures that could be implemented
that would have a huge effect on these problems.
I think to tackle the problem of pollution, cleaner fuels need to be
developed. The technology is already available to produce electric cars that

would be both quieter and cleaner to use. Persuading manufactures and
travelers to adopt this new technology would be a more effective strategy
for improving air quality, especially in cities.
However traffic congestion will not be solved by changing the type of
private vehicle people can use to do this. We need to improve the choice of
public transport services available to travelers. For example, if sufficient

sky frains and underground trains systems were built and effectively
maintained in our major cities, then traffic on the road would be
dramatically reduced. Long distance train and coach services should be
made attractive and affordable alternatives to driving your own car for long
journeys.
In conclusion, I think that long term traffic and pollution reductions would
depend on educating the public to use public transport more and on
governments using public money to construct and run efficient system.

The pie charts compare home ownership and renting for 1991 and 2007 in
percentage terms. In 1991, home owner were the most popular type of
housing, accounting for 60%, or more than over half of all homes. The next
largest sector was social rented homes, amounting to 23% or nearly one-

third of homes. The remaining homes were mostly privately rented (11%)
with a tiny fraction being social housing (6%).
Sixteen years later, in 2007, the number of home owners had risen to 70%,
or almost three quarters of all homes. This was an increase of 10%
compared with 1991. Much of the increase in home ownership can be
explained by the decrease in social rented homes, which had dropped from
23% to 17%.

The percentage of privately rented homes had remained unchanged at 11%.
However, there were 5 million more homes in 2007 compared with 1991 so
the number of rented homes had increased despite the same percentage.
Social housing has decreased three-fold from 6% in 1991 to 2% in 2007,
and it remains the least popular type of housing.
TOPIC: Some people believe that media should be allowed to publish
information about the private lives of famous people. Others say that
everybody has a right to privacy and this practice must be controlled or
even stopped. Discuss both views.
We are living in a celebrity obsessed world where everything that famous
people do or say makes headlines. If media publishes stories about the
private lives of the rich and the famous, that is because there is an audience
for them. People want to know what celebrities do, say, wear, eat and drink.

Media merely satisfies this need because it makes sound business sense for
them.

Public personalities also have a private life that they want to shield from
others. Just because they are famous, the media doesn’t have the right to
publish all sorts of personal information about them. It has now become
fashionable to publish photos and stories that are demeaning to famous
people. This trend must be condemned. Everybody has flaws; however,
when a celebrity exhibits them it becomes news. People get some weird
pleasure from knowing that these famous men and women that they
admire are not perfect.

On the flip side, there is a symbiotic relationship between celebrities and
the media. One depends on the other for their existence. Celebrities need
media exposure to remain celebrities. They are desperate to stay in the

news. They need media attention to build their career. They become
conscious of their right to privacy only after they have established
themselves in the industry. At that stage, however, they can’t expect the
media, which fuelled their growth, to stop writing about them.

To conclude, as long as people want to know about the private lives of
famous personalities, media will oblige them with photos and stories.
However, I believe that public personalities also have a right to privacy.
Although I wouldn’t say that media should stop writing about famous
people, I do believe that they should draw a line. Media must resist the
temptation to publish
stories that can destroy lives and careers.
The graph gives information about drinking habits of the US population by
age. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main
features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The bar chart shows information about people’s drinking behavior by age
group in the US. Several trends are evident.
The highest proportion of those who never drink (nearly two-thirds) was in
the 16 to 24 years group. The proportion tended to decrease with age. Only
40 per cent of people aged 65 to 74 had never drink.
On the other hand, the percentage of those who had quit drinking tended to
increase with age. Only 5 per cent of those in the youngest age group (16 to
24) were ex-drinkers, as opposed to roughly 40 per cent of those aged 65 to
75.

The percentage of those classed as heavy drinkers also showed a distinct
pattern. People in middle age (35 to 54) tended to be the heaviest drinkers

– approximately 13 per cent of the total. A relatively small proportion of
those in the youngest age group, and an even smaller percentage of those in
the oldest group (roughly 3 per cent) drink heavily.
Overall, age appears to be a significant factor in patterns of drinking
behavior.
TOPIC: Scientists and the news media are presenting ever more evidence of
climate change. Governments cannot be expected to solve this problem. It is
the responsibility of individuals to change their lifestyle to prevent further

damage.

What are your views?
Recently scientists worried about climate change have urged governments
to introduce measures to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that are
seen as its main cause. Simultaneously, politicians and environmentalists
have urged individuals to make changes to their lifestyle. I shall argue that
governments and individuals should take join responsibility for this
problem.

Firstly, industry accounts for a large proportion of the greenhouse gas
emissions, and this can only be controlled by government action. Measures
could be taken to discourage pollution, such as limiting or taxing the use of
fossil fuels. Alternatively, subsidies could be offered to industries to clean
up their production processes. If these ideas were adopted, I believe that
businesses

would

regard

pollution

as

a

financial

issue.

Secondly, only discussion between governments can ensure that solutions
are successful. The Kyoto agreement, for example, tried to reach global
agreement on how to address the problem. Without such co-operating, it
seems to me that efforts to reduce fuel consumption are unlikely to be
effective.

However, national and international policies will only succeed if individuals
also change their lifestyle. For example, people could think more carefully
about how they use energy in their homes. By using less electricity,
installing energy-efficient light bulbs and electrical appliances, or investing
in

solar

panels,

individuals

can

make

a

real

difference.

In addition, I think individual attitudes to transport need to change. Instead
of making short tips by car, people could choose to walk, cycle, or take a
bus. Since cars are a major source of the problem, changing our behavior in
this

area

would

have

a

major

impact.

In conclusion, I would maintain that only a combination of international
agreement, national policies, and changes in individual behavior will
succeed in preventing further damage to the environment.

TOPIC: Popular events like the football world cup and other international
sporting occasions are essential in easing international tensions and
releasing patriotic emotions in a safe way.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
The World Cup football match and the Olympics are held worldwide with
great national support and expectations. As a fan of those competitions, I
agree with the idea that sporting events can be necessary for international
relations and national unity. In this essay, I will think about the effects of
these popular sporting events.
First of all, the World Cup, Olympics and other international games work for
easing tensions among different nations. For example, South and North
Korea have football games regularly which give two nations a chance to
understand each other deeply. In the mid 1990s, a hundreds of North

Korean supporters came to South Korea with the footballers and they were
very excited during the sporting events. Even if it sounds ridiculous, many
South Koreans were quite surprised at that moment when North Koreans
shouted and cried during the match. We all realized that they were very
normal sports fans even though they were occasionally very secretive.
Through the sports, two divided nations could reduce their political and
ideological tensions and could feel the patriotic unity.
On the other hand, some sports matches can make international relations
worse. For instance, football or baseball games between Korea and Japan

are always big matches in two countries where full of tensions overflow.
Sometimes, after the matches, the two rivals blame each other and their
patriotic emotions explode in an aggressive way. Even much worse scenario
is that the troubles caused by losing games affect the players directly. As far
as I know, a couple of Korean players in Japan are suffered from invisible
discrimination after the match between two countries.
In conclusion, I think that international sporting occasions can be one of the
good ways to ease tensions or to release patriotism safely. However, I
believe that games can not be the fundamental ways for the sound
patriotism or peaceful international relations.

The bar graph below shows the numbers of male and female research
students studying six computer science subjects at a US university in 2011.
Summarise the information by selecting and report in the main features,
and make comparisons where relevant.

The bar chart shows the gender distribution of students doing computer
scientific research across a range of disciplines at a US university in 2011.
In five of the six disciplines, males outnumbered females. Male students
made up a particularly large proportion of the student group in subjects
related to the study of programming objects: mathematics, programming,
and engineering. The gender gap was particularly large in the field of
mathematics, where there were five times as many male students as female
students.

Men and women were more equally represented in subjects related to the
study of computer science: natural sciences, psychology, and linguistics. In

natural science, there were nearly as many women [approximately 200] as
men [approximately 240]. This was also true of psychology. Linguistics was
the only discipline in which women outnumbered men [roughly 110
women vs. 90 men].
Overall, the chart shows that at this university, computer science subjects
continue to be male-dominated; however, women have a significant
presence in fields related to psychology and the computer sciences.
TOPIC: Some people say that the Internet is making the world smaller by
bringing people together. To what extent do you agree that the internet is
making it easier for people to communicate with one another?
Nowadays, due to the advancement of technology new inventions are
coming into existence. It is a certainty that necessity is a mother of
invention? Internet is just like a wonder box, which contains every type of
information. Besides it has also proved as a very important tool to connect
people with each other.
In today's modernized era nobody has sufficient time to write letters to
their loved ones. Moreover it also takes longer to send or receive any
information. But through an internet it is an easiest way to send massages
to our loved ones. Either it can be in the form of an e- mail or by text

messages from internet to cell phones. We can send and receive messages
straight way.
In other hand today's youth generation mostly prefer to do chatting on the
Internet. Through this chatting we can write messages and straight way can
get their reply. Moreover, “voice chatting” is going to be very popular dayby-day.
As it is a reality that advantages and disadvantages are like both sides of a
coin, which usually runs parallel. So like other things internet also have
some downsides, like people are facing some health problems for example,
poor eye-sight, back ache, migrane. Today's teenagers usually prefer to

spend their time on internet rather than to participating in other physical
activities, so that's why they are going to be weaker in their physical health.
To conclude, I would like to say that internet is one of the most modernized
and most successful tools, not only for communication, even to get most
relevant information regarding every field in a very short period of time.
The pie charts show the average consumption of food in the world in 2008
compared to two countries; China and India. Write a report to a university
lecturer describing the data.

The graphs illustrate the consumption of 4 types of food used in the word in
2008. The figures are compared to the amounts of food used in china and
India in the same year.
As an overall trend, the two countries showed different food consumption
from the world average, while processed food consumption still had the
largest percentages in all the three charts.
In particular, processed food consumption was the highest in the in the
world, accounting for 41%, which was followed by vegetables and fruits at

29% and animal food at a quarter. Only 4% consisted of nut and seeds
consumption.
Likewise, China used processed food in the largest proportion of 39%.
Animal food showed the same figure as the world’s average, 25%. Vegetable
and fruits was used at 23% while nuts and seeds showed less than a half
figure.
In India, both vegetable and processed food were used the most in the year
2008 with percentages of 34% and 32% respectively, nuts and seeds used
in this country showed the largest proportion among the three charts given,
making up 19% at this time.

TOPIC: In many countries, sports and exercise classes are replaced with the
academic subjects. Discuss the effects of this trend.
Over the past few decades, academic subjects have become increasingly
important in this fast-changing information-based society. Nowadays, there
has been a growing debate as to whether it would be more effective to
replace physical education classes with academic subjects. Despite the
importance of sports, I highly believe that it is inevitable and more efficient
to focus more on academic subjects for several reasons.
Those who argue that sports and exercise classes are needed in school base
their case on the following arguments. First of all, sports are a good way to
