Many people know that Jackie Robinson was a pioneer. He was the first African American to play baseball
in the modern major leagues. Robinson joined the National League’s Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Most

people do not know who the second African American ballplayer was.
It was Larry Doby. He joined the Cleveland Indians of American League just 11 weeks after Robinson’s
debut with the Dodgers.
He didn’t start out in life hoping for a career in baseball. He once said that he grew up wanting to teach and
coach in high school. But in 1942, while he was still in high school, he tried out for the Newark Eagles
Negro League baseball team.
“They gave me a tryout, and I made the team,” Doby said. “That’s how I got involved in professional
baseball.”
When he joined the Cleveland Indians, he faced the same troubles that Robinson did. He had to work very
hard to succeed, because of his race.
When he became manager of the Chicago White Sox in 1978, he was only the second African American to
manage a major-league team. Because of his outstanding career, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame
in 1998.

Questions 49 – 53 refer to the following form
Many people now think that teachers give pupils too much homework. They say that it is unnecessary for
children to work at home in their free time. Moreover, they argue that most teachers do not properly plan the
homework tasks they give to pupils. The result is that pupils have to repeat tasks which they have already done
at school.
Recently in Greece many parents complained about the difficult homework which teachers gave to their
children. The parents said that most of the homework was a waste of time, and they wanted to stop it. Spain and
Turkey are two counties which stopped homework recently. In Denmark, West Germany and several other
countries in Europe, teachers cannot set homework at weekends. In Holland, teachers allow pupils to stay at
school to do their homework. The children are free to help one another. Similar arrangements also exist in some
British schools.
Most people agree that homework is unfair. A pupil who can do his homework in a quiet and comfortable room
is in a much better position than a pupil who does his homework in a small, noisy room with the television on.
Some parents help their children with their homework. Other parents take no interest at all in their children’s
homework.
It is important, however, that teachers talk to parents about homework. A teacher should suggest suitable tasks
for parents to do with their children. Parents are often better at teaching their own children!
49. According to the writer, many parents would like their children______________
A. to do homework at school only
B. to do homework both at school and at home
C. to have less homework
D. to do more difficult homework

A. their children’s homework was too difficult.
B. their children’s homework was useful.

C. more time should be allowed for homework.
