WHEN A TEACHER BECOMES A LEARNER AGAIN
IN A MASSIVE OPEN ONLINE COURSE
“USING EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASSROOM”

During 5 years of teaching English, the so-called technologies I have frequently used include but
not limited to my laptop, videos and articles on the internet and a projector to show them on
screen. These things are considered innovative teaching compared to what I experienced in high
school. However, they are no longer new in the 21 st century with the boom of the internet. As a
teacher trainer; therefore, I need to train my students, pre-service teachers, to use quality
software/applications so that they are able to work well in the technological age. This can be
achieved only if I implement some of them in my classes. This leads me to an online teacher
professional development course titled “Using Educational Technology in the English Language
Classroom” from April 22nd to May 20th 2018. The course provides learners with technologies
assisting teaching and learning English skills and considerations associated with using them.

Currently, I am in the second week in which technologies for teaching reading and writing are
presented. I have three more weeks to go so many other tools will be soon revealed. Therefore,
this paper, instead of being a study on the use of technology, is a review of the MOOC course
and a strategic plan to apply newly-learned technologies in the upcoming semester in September
2018. It is hopefully a source of motivation and a guideline for teachers to “learn, unlearn and
relearn” (T. Alvin).
