Nowadays, more and more parents decide to have children later in life. What are the reasons? Do
advantages of this outweigh disadvantages?

An increasing number of people now believe that embarking on the journey of parenthood is a decision
reached later in life. Many have been questioning the underlying motives behind this trend, and wonder
if it is a blessing or a curse to society. Personally, I believe the impact of this phenomenon is overall
positive.
The decision to postpone reproduction until later stages of life is rooted in the inability of newly-married
couples to support their babies financially. Indeed, when it comes to conceiving a child, parents should
brace themselves for a lifetime financial commitment. This is not limited to the medical cost of giving
birth and dairy products during early childhood but also extends to cover tuition fees in middle
childhood and adolescence. Such long-term expenses call for a stable income, which young parents often
lack due to the volatility of their career. It is, therefore, sensible that one delays childbirth until he is
certain that he could sufficiently provide sufficient conditions for his baby’s future development.
Despite its good intention, it is undeniable that this phenomenon would cause unfavorable changes to
the demographic structure. As a result, some cite the reduction in the labor force and the aging
population, for which late childbirth is to blame, as a hindrance to social development. Yet currently
overpopulation and the exhaustion of natural resources pose a more serious threat to society. Thus,
saving childbirth for a later phase of life would certainly ease the rapidly growing rate of the population
until a sustainable alternative source of energy is harnessed to meet the ever-increasing need of future
generations.
In conclusion, parents may delay childbearing to avoid enormous expenditure that raising a child entails.
While this practice could alter population growth and consequently lead to several issues, it is an
immediate solution to the present-day problem of energy scarcity.
