TOPIC 1:
Organized tour to remote community and other countries is increasingly popular.
Is it a positive or negative development for the local people and environment?
Sample Essay

Remote community = secluded parts of the world, rural areas, remote area, remote and
un-spoilt areas, distant regions
Increasingly popular = the burgeoning growth, ever-increasing popularity, increment, rise
Positive = beneficial, perks
Negative = adverse outcomes, negative impacts, detrimental effects
The local people and environment = the locals and the environmental quality

Organized tours = package tours
Tourist arrivals, incoming tourists
Entertainment facilities, transport infrastructure, better amenities
Lush and verdant space, far flung retreats
Negative = adverse outcomes, negative impacts, detrimental effects
The local people and environment = the locals and the environmental quality
Organized tours = package tours

Tourist arrivals, incoming tourists
Entertainment facilities, transport infrastructure, better amenities
Lush and verdant space, far flung retreats

The past few years have witnessed the burgeoning growth of organized tours to secluded parts of
the world. From my perspective, this phenomenon brings both beneficial and adverse outcomes
on the locals and the environmental quality.
The ever-increasing popularity of package tours to rural areas offers definite perks. Regarding
the locals, they can enjoy the amelioration in the living standard. To achieve an increment in
tourist arrivals and cater for the growing demand of incoming tourists, more entertainment
facilities and transport infrastructure within these locations are often established and improved.
Such easier access to better amenities can bring more joy and make lives less difficult in remote
areas. As for the environment, tourists tend to show preference for lush and verdant space when
it comes to what countryside or far flung retreats has to offer. Thus, more trees would be planted
and the air quality would then be significantly improved.
Positive = beneficial
Topic sentence – The ever-increasing popularity of package tours to rural areas offers
definite perks
The locals:
Main ideas – they can enjoy the amelioration in the living standard.
support ideas (1-2 sentences) – To achieve an increment in tourist arrivals and cater for
the growing demand of incoming tourists, more entertainment facilities and transport
infrastructure within these locations are often established and improved. Such easier
access to better amenities can bring more joy and make lives less difficult in remote
areas.
The environment:
Support ideas – tourists tend to show preference for lush and verdant space when it
comes to what countryside or far flung retreats has to offer.
Main ideas – Thus, more trees would be planned and the air quality would then be
significantly improved.

However, there can also be certain negative impacts brought by this trend that are worth
mentioning. Firstly, the development of this mode of tourism may give rise to environmental
degradation. Organized tours often bring a massive number of tourists to remote and previously
un-spoilt areas. This can be explained by a significant amount of water and air pollution as

environmentally unconscious tourists may throw litter or spit on the streets. Secondly, tourists
should also be held accountable for causing enormous disturbance to the life of locals. Intrigued
by the exotic way of living that they hardly encounter in their daily life, some tourists may give
themselves the autonomy to interfere with local residents’ life such as freely going into their
houses to explore or asking too many questions surrounding their private lives.
Negative = Adverse outcomes
Topic sentence – However, there can also be certain negative impacts brought by this
trend that are worth mentioning
The environment:
Main ideas – Firstly, the development of this mode of tourism may give rise to
environmental degradation.
Support ideas (1-2 sentences) – Organized tours often bring a massive number of tourists
to remote and un-spoilt areas. This can be explained by a significant amount of water
and air pollution as environmentally unconscious tourists may throw litter or spit on the
streets.
The locals:
Main ideas – Secondly, tourists should also be held accountable for causing enormous

encounter in their daily life, some tourists may give themselves the autonomy to interfere
with local residents’ life such as freely going into their houses to explore or asking too
many questions surrounding their private lives.
In conclusion, both beneficial and detrimental effects on local people and the environment can
be seen as a result of the rise in trips to distant regions.

TOPIC 2:
There have been many inventions in human history, such as the wheel. Some people think
the most important thing is the internet.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
MODEL ESSAY

Inventions = discover
Internet = digital era

In the ancient era, the human race discovered how to create fire, invented the wheel and
laid the foundation for today’s printing technology. Later on, in the industrial era, they
built more complex machinery and started to use motorized vehicles. Although all these
facilities have proved their great significance to all mankind throughout history, some state
that the single most important invention is the Internet. From my perspective, such a
statement is an exaggeration, despite some benefits of the Internet.

AGREE
In this digital era, the Internet helps store, communicate and disseminate information in a fast
and convenient way. As a key method of storing data, there is an increasingly high number of
people uploading their files onto the Internet. Microsoft’s OneDrive, for example, is a cloud
storage that provide file storage services for tens of millions of people. Furthermore, as an
important means of communication, the Internet enables people to get in touch with their friends
easily. This can be clearly seen in the case of Snap Chat, a messaging application with millions
of users monthly. Finally, the Internet serves as an important tool that facilitates the
dissemination of information. An excellent example of this is Facebook, a social network that

acts as a virtual platform helping one spread their ideas whenever and wherever they want.
Topic Sentence: In this digital era, the Internet helps store, communicate and disseminate
information in a fast and convenient way
Main Ideas 1: As a key method of storing data, there is an increasingly high number of people
uploading their files onto the Internet.
Support idea: Microsoft’s OneDrive, for example, is a cloud storage that provide file storage

Main Ideas 2: as an important means of communication, the Internet enables people to get in
touch with their friends easily
Support idea: This can be clearly seen in the case of Snap Chat, a messaging application with
millions of users monthly.
Main Ideas 3: the Internet serves as an important tool that facilitates the dissemination of
information.
Support idea: An excellent example of this is Facebook, a social network that acts as a virtual
platform helping one spread their ideas whenever and wherever they want.
DISAGREE
Although the power of the Internet cannot be overstated, I firmly believe that there are even
more valuable inventions. The first is electricity, without which almost all electronic
devices cannot function. In other words, the Internet could be of no use if there were no
electricity. The second is engines, which can be seen in a great diversity of facilities, from the
old hydropower locomotives to today’s luxury solar-powered aeroplanes. If there were

no engines, people would have to use animal-powered or human-powered vehicles, which
are often much slower than their motorized counterparts. To illustrate, the top pace of an average
camel is 30 miles per hour, half that of a car on a highway. The final and most important
discovery, from my point of view, is mobile phones, which are the physical platform for various
forms of digital communication. Today, billions are using mobile phones to make calls and send
text messages on a daily basis, a much greater number than that of those using the Internet for
the same purpose.

along with the Internet, these three inventions will still be the cornerstones of future humanity.

TOPIC 3:
Some people think that it is more beneficial to take part in sports which are played in
teams, like football. While other people think that taking part in individual sports is better,
like tennis or swimming.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Sample Answer

Team sports = play in teams, work as a team, participate in team sports
Individual sports= play individually, solo sport, doing sport individually

Some claim that team sports such as football are more beneficial to players. Meanwhile, others
hold a belief that sports that are played individually have superior advantages. In my opinion,
both types of sports bring equal advantages.

TEAM SPORT
On the one hand, by participating in team sport, we learn to collaborate with others. In sport
fields, individual ambition takes second place to team objective. Every team member is working
towards a common goal. To achieve this goal, cooperation and coordination are of the essence.
Members must work as a team and achieve the maximum synergy even if that means someone
has to make certain sacrifices. For instance, a cyclist may take the leading position for half of the
game and then drop out so as to ensure the victory of his teammate. Or another case in point is
that in football, a player may have to sacrifice the opportunity to score a goal to pass the ball to
his team player if the chance of a goal being score is higher with his teammate.
Main idea: On the one hand, by participating in team sport, we learn to collaborate with others.

INDIVIDUAL SPORT
On the other hand, solo sports can bring players a number of benefits, one of which is the

cultivation and maximization of personal capacities. To be precise, when being without the
assistance of others, one has to exert himself to the utmost to come up with solutions to win, and
this challenges his own limits. For example, in tennis, a player has to strategize his ball serves,
predict where the ball falls and be agile in his movement, and he has to multi-task all these on his
own. Besides, when doing sports individually, people are liberated from the constraint of rigidly
following a previously agreed plan, thereby having the freedom to experiment on new ways of
playing. Therefore, such players often have a high sense of satisfaction.

In conclusion, each type of sports has its merits in cultivating players’ personality development.
It should depend on each player as to what sports they should do.

TOPIC 4:
Some people think that governments should ban dangerous sports, while others think
people should have freedom to do any sports or activity.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Sample Answers

dangerous sports = extreme sports
Individual sports=

The media commonly provide a barrage of news about dangerous sports, because the deaths and
injuries associated with them often make for spectacular headlines. As a result, some people
have claimed that all extreme sports should be banned, although I would argue that such a
policy would be out of all proportion to the real risks involved.
DANGEROUS SPORTS SHOULD BE BANNED
Those in favor of prohibiting people from taking part in dangerous sports tend to focus on the
risk element. Even when individuals may be physically and mentally prepared to participate in
extreme sports activities, and even when they have all the right equipment, the dangers are everpresent. For example, few sports are as challenging and fraught with danger as BASE jumping.
Participants hurl themselves off cliffs or tall buildings, and few escapes without suffering severe
bruising or acute abdominal pains which normally last for several days. In addition, although
sports equipment rarely malfunctions, this may still happen and the consequences may be fatal –
such as a BASE jumper’s parachute failing to deploy. The supporters of legislation to ban
dangerous sports argue that such tragic outcomes not only affect the individual victims, but also
leave mental scars which their families then have to live with for the rest of their lives.

LEAVE IT FREEDOM
However, I support the view of those who contend that participation in extreme sports must be a
matter of personal choice. Firstly, overcoming physical challenges may be a springboard for
positive personal transformation. It may make a person stronger and more determined, and the
experience may be a life-changing one. Secondly, the rigors of preparation in order to take part
in mountain-climbing, white-water rafting or other such extremely strenuous activities
demonstrate that an individual is in peak health and physical condition. Finally, there is an
ethical aspect which dictates that a person should have the freedom to pursue the challenges
which they set themselves, even though this may involve a level of risk that others might find
unacceptable.
Topic Sentence: However, I support the view of those who contend that participation in extreme

In conclusion, while acknowledging the real risks, I would defend the right of any individual to
take part in the extreme sport of their choice.
TOPIC 5:

The news media have become too much influence in people lives today and this is a negative
development.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
This topic is only one point of view, and you just answer agree or disagree with this view, so
in the body of essay, all of paragraphs will be support for one view, agree or disagree.
Sample Answer
Many people believe that the news media have been exerting negative effects on people’s lives,
which is an undesirable phenomenon. I completely agree with this view.
AGREE 1
The scenario of the public’s growing dependence on news outlets in either print or non-print
forms means that people are being instilled with skewed or unreliable information. Many news
channels perpetually loop the same pieces of news all day long, hammering them in the minds of
unsuspecting audience. These media houses are often corporate sell-outs that publish news to
earn profits or boost their ratings, and negatively cater to the masses by putting out the most
sensational news stories. For example, XYZ — a popular news channel — often gives overlyfocused accounts of events such as the scandal of a celebrity or the anticipated demise of the
human race, simply to hook viewers.

AGREE 2
The freedom of news in sharing opinions about any issue is also thought to seed stereotypical
judgments into people’s thinking. This is an unfavorable situation, especially in developing or
underdeveloped countries where the majority of people are not rational enough to sift through

news and recognize the truth. As a result, the audience will be thrown into a state of panic and
jump to undesirable actions to protect themselves. For instance, the recent news that the state
will pay only 3000 US dollars maximum for those with savings account if a bank goes bankrupt
has made people withdraw all their money for fear of losing everything.

In conclusion, I believe that the influence of the media is excessively negative, leaving people
with distorted thoughts and fear.

TOPIC 6:
People are living longer. Some people think that it causes big problems. Others, however, think
the aging population has many advantages for business, government and for society in general.
Discuss both views & give your own opinion
MODEL ANSWER
Sample Answers

Living longer = aging population, elderly citizens
Big problems= negative consequences

There is little room for doubt that there has been a staggering growth in the proportion of elderly
people in many countries. In my opinion, I believe that this trend brings both advantages
and disadvantages to society as a whole.
DISADVANTAGES
On one hand, it is inevitable that the remarkable increase in life expectancy has some negative
consequences for some reasons. Firstly, the aging population can impose a heavy pressure on the

economy and the healthcare system as the more people retire, the heavier the pension burden the
state has to carry. Hospitals will be flooded with frail and infirm elderly citizens searching for
medical treatments while the labor force also suffers due to the shortage of productive workers
who often make the biggest contribution to society. Secondly, more old people would pose a
burden to families as parents would have to take care of older family members, and no doubt
aged citizens tend to be meddlesome and stubborn, causing frequent conflicts probably.
Topic Sentence On one hand, it is inevitable that the remarkable increase in life expectancy has
some negative consequences for some reasons
Main idea 1: Firstly, the aging population can impose a heavy pressure on the economy and the
healthcare system as the more people retire, the heavier the pension burden the state has to carry.
Support idea: Hospitals will be flooded with frail and infirm elderly citizens searching for

Main idea 2: Secondly, more old people would pose a burden to families as parents would have
to take care of older family members, and no doubt aged citizens tend to be meddlesome and
stubborn, causing frequent conflicts probably.
ADVANTAGES
On the positive side, the benefits of this development should not be underestimated. First, they
are able to contribute to some sectors such as teaching, management, scientific research and
politics thanks to their extensive experience. We often see top executives in their 50s doing
consultation sessions and help companies function more efficiently, or old teachers coaching

students for contests because of their vast knowledge and hands-on experience. Second, as most
people in modern times are busy with tasks at the workplace, elderly members like grandparents
can do the babysitting, relieving parents’ worries of their children lacking in moral support or
leisure activities.

Main idea 2: Second, as most people in modern times are busy with tasks at the workplace,
elderly members like grandparents can do the babysitting, relieving parents’ worries of their

In conclusion, for the reasons I have mentioned above, it seems to me that an aging population
has both merits and drawbacks on society, largely depending on how we react to it.
TOPIC 7:
More and more people in the city live in homes with small spaces or no outdoor areas.
Do you think it is a negative or positive development?
Sample Answer

City = urban
Live in home = live in houses

Small space = cramped space and few
Outdoor areas

It is true that an increasing number of people in urban areas are living in houses with cramped
space and few or no outdoor areas. I think this is a negative development for some reasons
below.
NEGATIVE 1
Firstly, stuffy living conditions can affect people’s moods. When there is little space for us to
move around the house, we just lose our temper and get irritated being surrounded by four brick
walls. Worse still, some space outside at the porch such as a garden with beautifully grown
flowers can be a good remedy for people’s stress and anxieties. Without such spaces, the tension
level just rises dramatically as when taking a look outside, what we can see is the bumper-tobumper traffic with cars honking and dust drifting everywhere in the air, making house owners
moody all day.
Topic Sentence Firstly, stuffy living conditions can affect people’s moods. When there is little

NEGATIVE 2:
Secondly, convenience and productivity also suffer as a consequence. Families with many
generations living under the same roof would often complain about the lack of privacy when
their houses are too small and narrow. The kids will feel humiliated and ashamed if they plan to

invite their friends over for playing, or the father may have to abandon his hobby of playing
saxophone so as to save others the nuisance of loud noises from his instrument. As for me,
sometimes I cannot concentrate on my schoolwork, seeing others walk back and forth in the

house. This just makes me get distracted and I often have to wait others to sleep and then do my
homework.

In conclusion, from what I think and from my personal experience, living in a small house is too
disadvantageous, so this is definitely a negative development on the whole.

TOPIC 8:
Solving environment problems should be the responsibility of an international organization
rather than each national government.
Do you agree or disagree?
MODEL ANSWER
There is no doubt that environment-related issues ought to be held responsible for by an
international organization instead of individual countries. I disagree with this statement for
some reasons.
DISAGREE 1
There are numerous environmental issues such as climate change, melting glaciers and
intensifying greenhouse effect happening on a global scale. As the argument goes,
an international organization would act as a leader, issuing principles for all member countries
to conform to or it will have sufficient financial capabilities to support the improvement of the
environment. Cited cases are the Kyoto protocol has contributed to the slowing down of climate
change on the earth, or the United Nations’ support for Third World countries have helped

improve the air quality there. This argument, however, fails to take into consideration the fact
that compulsion often backfires if an individual nation has no intention to cooperate, or
the incentives provided can make recipient countries over reliant and avoid coming up with
innovative ideas to resolve their country’s environmental situation. This in the long term exerts a
negative overall global effect.

DISAGREE 2
I side with those who think that each governmental body should take responsibility for
addressing domestic environmental problems. Firstly, this practice would have a chain
effect, benefiting not only the host country but also neighboring nations. For instance, if
China diminishes its emissions by downsizing its industrial activities to a certain acceptable
level, the air contamination in Hanoi would be reduced as a consequence. Secondly, the root of a
complete resolution of environmental issues comes at grassroots level, only achieved by the
efforts of a country’s government. If walking or cycling are promoted amongst those with an
inclination to use private vehicles, this can help diminish the colossal volumes of exhaust gas

and ameliorate the communal air quality. Or, if people are encouraged to participate in
the international Earth Hour when everyone is asked to turn their lights off in sixty minutes, huge
amounts of power can be minimized. Enacting such events which are aimed at creating a mindset
shift in the public regarding environmental protection and promoting a simple lifestyle can only
be conducted by a country’s government.

government rather than an international organization.
TOPIC 9:
The increase in people’s life expectancy means that they have to work older to pay for their
retirement. One alternative is that people start to work at a younger age.
Is this alternative a positive or negative development?
Sample Answer

As people’s life expectancy is becoming higher every day, older citizens have to devote more of
their time to work. However, some decide to work at a younger age. From my own perspective,
this trend is positive.

POSITIVE 1
Entering the workforce at an earlier age can be a good choice for people’s better financial
circumstances when they become old. The younger a person is, the more energetic and persistent
he or she is in their job. Without a shadow of a doubt, youths can perform most office-related
tasks with their zeal and the best degree of their productivity. They are less absent-minded and
would make fewer blunders and work while being capable of multi-tasking. Given this,
promotion prospects are promising and they are likely to climb up the career ladder within some
years. As a consequence, their income could be colossal enough to well afford them for the
future retirement life.

POSITIVE 2
Besides, unlike the old citizens who might choose to start work late or fail to make headway in
their career progression, the proactive young individuals would have been wise if they opt for
this alternative of working early. There is more time to sample different work environments,
learn new skills and meet people from diverse backgrounds without having to concern

themselves about the low salary or missed opportunities triggered by job hopping. They can do
this as long as they like since the youth age permits experience and gives them plenty of freedom
to pursue their dreams. The salary then still accumulates in value, but the youths have job
satisfaction and live their life to the fullest.
