The Statue of Liberty is situated in New York Harbour. It was a gift to the United States from the people of
France. The statue's 300 copper pieces were transported to America on a ship. In 1886, the statue was the
tallest iron structure ever built. From the ground to the top, it measures 93 metres.
Lady Liberty holds a torch in one hand and a tablet in the other. On the tablet is the date of America’s first
Independence Day, July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. The statue is a symbol of freedom.
Approximately four million people visit the statue each year. The statue will be celebrating its 130th
birthday in October 2016.
