Well Planning Overview
• Session Objectives;
– By the end of this session, you should be able to:
• State the basic requirements for well planning,
• List main well types,
• List information included in a well plan and identify sources,
• Describe format of a well plan generally available prior to
drilling.

Well Planning Overview
• Introduction;
– Well Planning is one of the most demanding areas of
Drilling Engineering,
– It requires the integration of various engineering
disciplines, corporate polices and personal experience,
– The process may vary within drilling industry, but the
final aim is to drill a well safely that satisfies the
objectives set out in the well proposal,
– Well Proposal is usually issued by Petroleum Engineers
and describes well objectives.

Well Planning Overview
• Well Planning Requirements;
– Main requirement for well planning is to ensure that a

program is put together for drilling a well that has, at least,
the following characteristics:
• The well can be drilled safely,
• The well can be used to satisfy the well objectives,
• The well is drilled at minimum cost,

– It is not always possible to accomplish these factors due to:
• Known factors (equipment limitation, casing availability etc),
• Unknown factors (geology, pressure).

Well Planning Overview
• Well Planning Guidelines - Safety ;
– Sufficient Hydrostatic Head with fluid in hole - correct
density!
– Blow Out Prevention Equipment in good condition
– Casing designed to contain max anticipated pressure
– No kicks or swabbing
• Danger to human life and environment
• Damage to pay zone during kill operations

Well Planning Overview
• Well Planning Guidelines - Production & Cost;
– Completion starts with the first turn of the Bit!
(36”, 26”, 17 1/2”, 16”, 12 1/4”, 8 1/2”, 6”, 3 3/4”)

– Bigger diameter hole does not mean larger production,

– Need to balance contingency vs. cost,
– Well cemented production casing - no remedial work,
– Usable inside diameter - just big enough for ;
• Logging,
• Completion String / Test string,

– Completion string -tubing size vs. pressure, special
equipment (SSV, packer, dual string etc.).

Well Planning Overview
• Classifications of Well Types;
– Purpose :
• Exploration (Wild Cat): These are wells drilled in an area
that has not been explored before. (No offset data, very
little geological and pressure data available).
• Appraisal: These wells are drilled to determine how large
the reservoir is. (Some offset data always available).
• Development: These wells are drilled to enter a known
productive portion of the reservoir. (Good offset data
available),
– Production, Injection or Observation

– Profile :
• Vertical, Deviated, Horizontal or Multilateral

Well Planning Overview
• Data Gathering for Well Plan;
– The following set of information needs to be gathered for
well planning and are generally taken from offset wells;
• Bit records,
• Casing shoe depth,
• Electric and mud logs,
• Drillstem tests,
• Mud recaps,
• Drilling times,
• Hole problems,
• Bottom hole target.

Well Planning Overview
• Well Plan Format;

– Introduction:
• Well name,
• Location,
• Anticipated spud date etc.

– Program:
• Contains program information on formation and casing
depths, cement, floating equipment, wellhead, mud, bits,
hydraulics, logging and step by step drilling procedure.

Well Planning Overview
• Well Plan Format;
– Detailed Design Data:
• Consists of the engineering calculations that built into the
program. (Casing & Hydraulic designs).

– Testing Procedures:
• Outline BOP testing, kick control and evacuation
procedures (offshore).

– Vendor Recommendations:
• Service company recommendations, drilling rig contracts

with inventory.

Well Planning Overview
• Well Plan Format - Additional;
– Offset Well Data,
– Permits, Plots, Government Regulation, Safety:
• Copies of all required permits and accompanying plots are
excellent items to include in well planning.

– Prespud Meeting info,
– Well History File:
• The final act of well planning and performed after the well
has been drilled (DEE process),
• Compares AFE with actual on item by item basis,
• This will help for future planning.
