Key Activities

INTRODUCTION
Weather Report: Weather songs or chants (“What’s the weather like today?”- the
song downloaded from YouTube)
- Teacher asks three questions:
* What’s the day today?
* What’s the month?
* What’s the weather like today?
- Teacher answers each question and asks students to repeat, then writes the date and
draws / puts the weather symbol on the board. ( You do not need to ask students to
repeat fluently because they will answer these questions every English lesson)

Warm up and review:
 “Hello” song
- Play the CD 1 track 1 ( the “Hello” song ) to introduce the lesson. Students join in with the

words and do gestures as they sing (When they sing the last line of the song, get students to
jump up with their arms in the air as they say fun.).
- Play the recording one more time and ask students to sing along in chorus.
- Play the recording again. Students sing along chorally and do gestures at the same time.

It’s English time.
Let’s have fun.

Lesson presentation:
 Introduce Rosy, Tim, Billy, Hello / Hi, Bye
- Set a meaningful context to introduce new vocabulary (Today we welcome three new
friends. They are Rosy, Tim, Billy). Remember to introduce the names one by one while
showing the pictures.
- Students practice saying the names chorally and individually. (To improve their
pronunciation skills.)
- Do gestures with the puppets named Rosy and Tim to introduce the greetings and
farewell words Hello/ Hi and Bye.
- Students practice pronouncing the words chorally and individually.
 Point and say. Stick the stickers
- Have students open their Class book- p. 4 . They listen to the teacher and point to the
correct person in the picture part 3.
- Ask them to work in pairs. One student says a name and the other points to the correct
character picture.
- Students work individually to choose the sticker at the end of their Class book and

stick them on the suitable places in the picture part 3.
 Say “Hi/ Hello”
- Throw a ball to a student and say Hi. Then ask him/ her to throw that ball to another
student and say Hi or Hello.
- Continue this activity in the same way with the other students.
DEVELOPMENT
 Look, read and draw
- Hand out a photocopied sheet to each student.
- Ask students to look at the pictures and draw Rosy, Tim and Billy into the correct
column.

 Listen and chant
- Divide the class into groups of three. Give each group a character’s name.
- Play the recording - track 4.
- Students listen and practice chanting with gestures expressing the words Hello and
Goodbye.
- Do the chant with the class without music. Every time a group hears their name,
they stand up then sit down quickly.
- Repeat the chant more quickly.
- Continue in the same way until the chant is so fast that students cannot keep up.
 Introduce oneself by name:
- Use the teacher’s name card (e.g. Ms Trang) and the sentence card to introduce his/
her name to the puppet Rosy, Tim and Billy Hello! I’m Ms Trang. What’s your
name?
- Practice asking and answering in chorus and in pairs.
 Make and decorate the name card
- Give each student a piece of white paper (A4 – sized paper).

- Ask them to fold it into four parts then glue two parts together to make a 3D-shaped
triangle.

- Have students write their names in large letters on one side of the triangle.
Then they colour and decorate their name cards.
- Ask students to use their name cards to practice introducing their names in pairs.

CONSOLIDATION
 Musical chairs
- Take away one chair.
- Play the Hello! What’s your name? song ( track 6).
- Students take their name cards, move around the class and introduce their names
e.g. I’m Minh. to the classmates they meet on the way.
- Stop the music suddenly.
- Ask students to find a chair and take a seat immediately.
- The student without a chair will be out of the game.
- Take away one more chair.
- The game continues in the same way.
 Trace the lines and say ( Class book p.5)

Story time: “In the morning”
a. Signal for story time.

+Teacher points to the car in the picture “ Tom and Jerry” and asks “ What

- Ss give answers, then Teacher gives the right answer “ It’s yellow”,

“It’s red”
+Teacher points to another things in the class, asks Ss “What colour is
it?”and gets Ss’ answer with sentence pattern “It’s…….”
 Practice:
Teacher points to the new words “cat”, “car” and the new sentence pattern
“What colour is it? - It’s…..” and asks the whole class to read aloud three
times.
Teacher calls group A to read the new words and new patterns aloud, then
group B reads aloud, then group C….
Teacher asks group A to make questions and group B answers, and then
change the roles.
Teacher calls each pair to come up to the front, and practice the new
sentence pattern. (about 3 pairs)

* Game:
+Teacher will collect the objects from Ss such as: ruler, book, pen, pencil,
bag.ect…, and then put them on the table.
- Each pair of a group will go to the table, one person will pick up any
object and ask “What colour is it”, the other will answer “It’s ….”
- Group has the most correct questions and answers that will win.

Rule:
- Teacher throws a ball to a student, says “one”. The student who catches the ball

says “two”.
- Then that student can say “a number” and throw the ball to another student and the
student who catches the ball says the next number.
- The one who says incorrectly will be eliminated.

 Set-the-scene:
+ Teacher puts the dog’s and duck’s pictures on the board.
- Ss look at the pictures and realize ‘Tom’ and ‘Jerry’, ‘dog’ and ‘duck’.
+Then, Teacher says “ You have already known “Tom and Jerry”. Now, Can
you guess “Who they are?” ”. Teacher points to the pictures ‘dog and duck’
- Ss answer, then teacher gives the correct answers ‘It’s a dog’, ‘It’s is a
duck’.
+Teacher writes down the words “ DOG” and “ DUCK” on the board, then
spells these words “D O G” and “ D U C K”.
+Teacher asks Ss ‘What is the first letter of the two words “DOG and
DUCK”?. That is “ D”
+Teacher says ‘Can you guess what letter we are going to learn today?’

for each group)
* Game:
+ Teacher has four pieces of paper for ‘cat, dog, duck, car’.
+Teacher requests each pair to go to the board. One student will look at the
paper and do the action without speaking (St can make a sound). The other
will watch their partner’s action and guess the name of things.( give marks for
group having the right answer)

- Use pictures and letter cards to introduce the letter A a, B b in the upper- case and
lower-case.

- Use word cards apple, Annie to introduce sound /æ/ and boy, bat for /b/.
- Students practice the sounds chorally and individually to develop their pronunciation
skills
 Listen and chant
- Play the recording CD 1 track 8 & 12.
- Students practice chanting to improve their pronunciation skills.
- Students can use gestures ( such as put both hands on hips for boy and mime hitting a
ball for bat) or move around to point to the correct pictures which have been put on the
wall before. (apple and Annie)
DEVELOPMENT
 Back Writing
- Ask students to work in groups.
- Each group makes a line.
- Show a letter card to the students at the end of the lines. Then they write the letter
(use their fingers) on the back of the students standing in front of them and so on… The
last students ( the students standing at the beginning of the lines) run to the board and
write down that letter.
- The student with the correct answer will get one point for their group.
- The game will be played again with sounds but this time the teacher whispers the
sound instead of showing a letter card.
 Stick. Then circle and say.
- Have students to open their Class book. (p. 6 & 8)
- Ask them to work individually to choose the sticker at the end of their Class book and
stick them on the suitable places in the picture part 3.
- Then ask them to circle the sounds /æ/, /b/ and compare their work with the partner
while saying aloud the sounds.
CONSOLIDATION
 Air writing
- Divide the class into 4 groups: ‘apple’, ‘Annie’, ‘boy’, ‘bat’.
- Play the chants again.

- Students repeat the sound and the word for their group. The ‘apple’ group writes the
letter A in lower-case in the air as they say the word, and the ‘Annie’ group writes the
letter A in upper-case in the air as they say the word. Do the same way with the words
‘boy’ and ‘bat’.
 Circle the letter A a and Join the letter B b.
- Ask students to open their class book (p.6 & 8) to do this task. Remember to give an
example written on the board first. ( to make sure the students know how to do the
exercise clearly)
 Photocopied worksheet
- Hand out each student a photocopied worksheet.
- Model the activity in the front of the class.
- Have students do this task individually then they compare their work to their partner‘s.

Key Activities

INTRODUCTION
Weather Report: Weather songs or chants (“What’s the weather like today?”- the
song downloaded from YouTube)

- Teacher asks three questions:
* What’s the day today?
* What’s the month?
* What’s the weather like today?
- Teacher answers each question and asks students to repeat, then writes the date and
draws / puts the weather symbol on the board such as sunny, rainy, cloudy, etc.
( You do not need to ask students to repeat fluently because they will answer these
questions every English lesson)
Warm up and review:
 Lightning Flashcards
- Teacher stands in front of the class with the flashcards. (Rosy, Tim, Billy, A a, B b,
Apple, Annie, Boy, Bat)
- Students form two teams, each team in a line. The first student in each line stands
with his / her back to the teacher.
- Teacher says 1.2.3. What is it?
- Students quickly turn around and the first student who calls out the correct answer
wins a point for their team.
Lesson presentation:
 Introduce the numbers 1 and 2
- Set a meaningful context to introduce new vocabulary (Let’s go to the supermarket
with Rosy today. What does Rosy have in the basket? Can you guess?)
- Students make a guess of food, fruits, school things, etc.
- Use picture cards and word cards to review the word ‘apple’ and introduce the

- Play the recording (track 10). Students listen and point to the pictures in their Class
book as they hear the words.
- Then teacher and students sing the words of the song without the music while
demonstrating some actions ( clap hands once for one, twice for two or stamp feet)
 Introduce a short story
- Set a meaningful context for the story. (Today is the first day of the new school year.
Rosy and Tim go to school. What happens at school? Let’s guess.)
- Give a chance for students to think and guess.
- Have students look at the four pictures and identify the characters.
- Play the recording (track 13). First, students listen and point to the pictures. Then they
point to the characters in the second time. (Remind the students that stories in English
go from left to right.)
 Role-play
- Divide the class into groups of five (Rosy, Tim, Billy, Miss Bell and Mum).
- Play the recording again. Demonstrate some actions for the story.
- Students practice acting out the story. Teacher moves around and help them if
necessary.
- Finally, invite some groups to come to the front to play the roles in the story.
* Picture 1: Miss Bell holds her arms outstretched as she welcomes Tim to class.
Tim waves as he introduces himself.
* Picture 2: Miss Bell holds her arms outstretched as she welcomes Rosy to class.
Rosy waves as she introduces herself.
* Picture 3: Miss Bell bends down as she says Hello to Billy. Billy laughs and
waves his rattle.
* Picture 4: Rosy, Tim and Miss Bell wave goodbye to Billy and Mum. Mum waves
goodbye and Billy waves his rattle.

 Count and trace the correct number
- Ask students to open their Class book (p. 7) and do the exercise 3.
 Dice game
- Students work in groups.
- Give each group a dice (There is a picture of things on each side of the dice, e.g. one
apple, two boys, two bats, one bat, etc.)
- Students take turns throwing the dice, counting the things and say aloud.
 Reorder the story
- Students work in groups.
- Give each group a set of four pictures in the story.
- Ask students to work in groups to reorder the story and use glue to stick them on the
A4 – sized paper. Then acting out the story in groups.
