READING
1.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each question.
Self-portrait of a Chinese mom

Amy Chua is the daughter of Chinese immigrants to the United States. Her parents, she
says, were “extremely strict but extremely loving”. She tried to raise her kids the same
way. Chua never allowed her kids to have a playdate, watch TV, participate in a school

play, or choose their own extra-curricular activities. The kids are also not allowed to “get
any grade less than an A” or “not be the No. 1 student in every subject except gym and
drama”. When her 7-year-old daughter failed to master a new piece on the piano, Chua
threatened her with no lunch, no dinner, no Christmas presents, no birthday parties for 2,
3, 4 years. Chua made her daughter work into the night, denying her even a break to go to
the bathroom. Then at last the girl made a breakthrough. She mastered the piece, and
wanted to play it again and again.
Unlike many Western parents who would have backed down, convinced that the child just
wasn’t ready or able to master the new piano piece, Chua believed that her child could do
it. But she wasn’t going to learn the piece without intense effort, and that effort wasn’t
going to happen unless the child was pushed.
What helps kids? To be allowed to choose for themselves, or to be pushed into
achievements that will pay off later in life? A more indulgent approach might seem more
caring. But, as Chua argues, her parenting style shows a concern for the long-term welfare
of her kids.

Advice for parents of teenagers

You’ve always brought up your children to come to you when they’re in trouble. You feel
it is your job to look after them when they are having problems. But now, as your children
are growing up, they don’t often want to share their problems with you. That’s perfectly
normal, so don’t worry! Of course, you want to get on well with your children, but that
means you have to give them some freedom.
Maybe they have fallen out with their best friend and feel upset and angry. Maybe they’ve
just split up with the boyfriend or girlfriend that they’ve been going out with. Maybe they
have been let down by a friend whom they trusted. Teenagers go through all these
problems. If they want to talk to you about it, then that’s fine. But if they don’t, don’t
force them. They’ll come to you when they’re ready.

__________ worried about what their children are up to and who they might be hanging

by the growing lack of (3) __________ between parents and teenagers. “In the past,

reluctant to repeat their act for (8) __________ of being subjected to more surveillance.
While these methods are perfectly legal, Andrew Hird said that he was “alarmed” by the

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, believed that personality and physical appearance

often divide people (3) ________ two types: those who are fat and short and those that are

Tall, thin people usually have smallish heads, long noses and bony faces. As far (8)
________ their personality is concerned, they tend to be shy and bad-tempered. They

often suffer (9) ________ stress and avoid physical activity, although (10) ________ they
do take part in sports, they are generally very good.
2.

Read the passage and choose the best answer.

When Usain Bolt was a young boy growing up in Jamaica, his parents took him to the
doctor because he couldn’t keep still. He was gifted at cricket, his first love. “But I just
happened to run fast. They said, try track and field, and I continued because it was easy
and I was winning. And my dad said I should concentrate on running because it’s an
individual sport and, if you do good, you do good for yourself.”
Nobody can hold a light to Usain Bolt - he is a one-off. There’s the size, for a start: 1.96
metres (ideal sprinters are thought to be no more than 1.85 metres). Then there’s the
scoliosis, a curved spine which means one leg is shorter than the other. This condition
should have made it impossible for him to have a career in sport. And the attitude - at
warm-up his rivals look as if they will explode with tension, but Bolt smiles, even dances.
And, of course, Bolt is said to be the fastest man ever, although he wasn’t even giving his
all when he broke the 100 and 200 metre records. Bolt maintains that he isn’t quite as cool
and laid-back as he appears to be. There are things that bother him. “I try not to let them,
but they do.” For example, he says he was so uptight before the junior world
championships final - where he became the youngest gold medallist at the age of 15 - that
he put his shoes on the wrong feet. “I’ve never been so nervous in my whole life. I was
shaking because everyone was expecting me to get a medal.”
Winning that race changed his whole life, but for much of the next three years he was
injured. That’s when Jamaica turned on him. His own people said he was undisciplined,
he partied too much. And yes, he did; but the truth was he was suffering with his spine.
People, he says, are quick to criticize. Even now, “People say I’m always partying. Well, I
do party. I work hard and I’m going to enjoy myself. I’m not going to let people hold me
back. That’s when the stress comes in and when you get stressed you start to lose it”. Bolt
arrived in athletics at a time when the profession had lost a lot of respect over drugtaking. Here was a man who looked and acted differently. In 2008, though, he had to beg

his coach to let him run the 100m at the Beijing Olympics. It took a lot of persuasion
because Bolt had been running the distance for less than a year and was surviving on a
diet of junk food. Despite that, not only did he win gold but he broke the 100 metres
world record.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It’s more important to
keep old friends than to make new friends. Use specific reasons and examples to
support your answer. The following outline is necessary for your writing.
Introduction
• I think making an effort to keep one’s old friends is more important than making
new friends.
- If you are friends with a person for a long time, you have a responsibility to that
person.
- By making an effort to keep your old friends, you’ll monitor your actions and be
a better person.

Body

Paragraph 1
• All relationships involve trust.
- If you are friends with a person for a long time, you have a responsibility to that
person.

Example: Helping in difficult situations, telling secrets and problems.
• If you did not make any effort to maintain your friendship, you would not be
fulfilling your responsibility and you would be betraying the friendship.
Paragraph 2
• Trying to make long-term friendships makes one a better person by encouraging
one to act in a less selfish manner.
Example: A person who never worries about keeping his old friends would have no
basic control over his behaviour and end up hurting his friends.
Conclusion
Summary: You make new friends throughout the course of your life, but your first
priority should be to make every effort to maintain your relationships with your
closest friends.

How do I manage difficulties with hearing?
When caring for someone who has hearing loss or is deaf, it’s important to:

- make sure you have their attention and stand in front of them when speaking.

- look at the person as you speak.
- speak slowly and clearly, but do not over-emphasise or distort your lip
movements as this can make it difficult for people to read your lips.
- not shout - although sometimes it may be necessary to speak louder.
- remember that shouting can make it hard for people to lip-read.
- try to use body language and facial expressions when you speak as this helps
give the person you are speaking to some context in case they missed part of
what you said.
- write messages down so they can read them if it’s appropriate.
- understand that beards, moustaches, chewing and putting hands in front of your
face can obscure communication.
- avoid talking in a noisy environment, or try to reduce background noise when
possible.
- speak directly to the deaf person and not to the interpreter if an Auslan (sign
language) interpreter is present.
- make sure that hearing aids are functioning, being used effectively and checked
regularly
- install visual smoke detectors in the house.
- investigate other visual alerts such as alarm clocks and front door alerts.
- install assistive-listening devices such as volume-controlled phones for

Caring for a child with a disability

If you have a child with a disability, you need to know about the various services in place
to support you. Legally, a child is someone under the age of 18 years. Often however,
parents (or other family members) continue to care for children with disabilities long after
they reach adulthood.
Children with disabilities are entitled to the same services and family benefits as all other
children. The emphasis in the following information is on those services and payments
specifically related to disability. They apply whether the child was born with the disability
or acquired it later.
You can find more information on services and supports in our booklet “Entitlements for
children with disabilities”.
Providing for a child with a disability

Parents have an obligation to maintain their children until adulthood. Although a child
with a disability may be maintained by their parents after the age of 18, this does not
provide them with any special entitlement to provision in a parent’s will.
You may use a covenant as a tax-efficient way to give money to a child aged over 18, but
this could affect the child’s entitlement to Disability Allowance.
If you want to make specific provision for your child, you should get legal advice. One
option is a trust from which your child may benefit after your death. Many parents use
discretionary trusts to provide for a child with a disability without affecting entitlement to
benefits.
Most public sector occupational pension schemes, and some private sector schemes, have
provisions that allow for the pension arrangements for dependent children to continue for
the lifetime of a permanently incapacitated child.
