Except from the Native American Indian tribes inhabiting before the white
settler arrived and other ethnic groups came to America voluntarily for better
lives. The African- Americans were unluckily brought to United States to be
sold as slavery. At that time, enslavement was contradiction because of contrary
of traditional values of United States: freedom and equality of opportunity.
Therefore, it led to split between 2 sections: Southern, in which people viewed
slavery as a tool for economy; Northern, in which chose to make slavery against
the law. A minor of northern claimed that slavery was not acceptable in freedom
country and had to be abolished. However, a larger amount found them as a
threat which could take away their economic freedom. Until 1860, Abraham
Lincoln, trying to ban enslavement became the president of United States; the
southern states left the Union to form a new nation and meant the Civil War,
which the North was finally victorious and ended the slavery. However, the
African- Americans could not still readily assimilate due to discrimination,
especially most of southern states, in which the black people weren’t behaved
equally as the white. From until now, in the heart of United States, the AfricanAmericans still stand for bias hundred years ago left. For example, particularly
Trayvon Martin, a black boy, left the grocery store after buying some
refreshments to go home. Having wearing Hooded Jackets, he was suspected for
doing something wrong despite not guilty behaviour. He was shot by
Zimmerman, the policeman of that area. Zimmerman was prosecuted as murder
but acquitted with reason “self-defence”. Another highlight was the violence of
racism obeying groups in Charlottesville, Virginia. Obviously, despite standing
the same position, the black people still doesn’t have equal behaviour in front of
justice or laws.
Having not brought about a deep change in souls and minds of white American
although United States Supreme Court’s declaration, the black leader
determined to end racial segregation and discrimination. Martin Luther King,
Jr., was one of important Black leaders whose goal and ideas were largely
developed from basic values and make black a larger part in American culture.
And other leaders like Malcolm X, claimed a rejection of American values
because it was nothing more than culture. He believed that the black must

separate from whites and build their own society. However, most AfricanAmericans continued to look to King as their leader. By the way, we can see that
King’s actions had affect positively when 2 civil rights laws in the 1960s
removing racial segregation in the South and barriers that prevented black
people from voting. Relatively, King is the inspiration for non-white Americans


struggle against the racism. And now it’s clear that black people has a vital
position in America when many the blacks have achieved significant status in
all facets of that country like Obama, Steve Harvey, Michael Jordan, Richard
Wright, etc.
Thanks to civil rights laws of the 1960s, the African- Americans have a better
chance to assimilate. Besides, the bias and prejudice of whites reduced. Black
people became a part of the country, and had a dramatically high position in
everywhere, event in Congress. However, there was still a gulf between the
races, segregation expressions were still there. They could feel separateness so
that someone started to advocate the broad idea of Malcolm X such as Spike
Lee or Luis Farrakhan who form an organization “Million March Man”. His
angry voice appealed to many young blacks, who are searching for their
separated identity, and the one will validate their contribution. Fortunately,
people with good faith, both black and white, are working together for their own
pursuit. Of course, we cannot prevent the segregation completely because it will
take many years for USA to change their view about black people. However,
generally, the blend in lifestyle, working, activity between the races has been
relevant. It will be the future of USA, when blend between the races complete,
it will be the strong country not only about economy, army, science but also
national united spirit.
By the 1920s, the government decided to close the border to mass immigrant.
However, they greatly enrich the cultural diversity of the nation. Ultimately,
they didn’t cause major change to system of government, enterprise or values.
However, in 1965, USA made a change that allow immigrant to come and

eliminate all older laws. Therefore, it meant the new challenge- large number of
immigrants who are not Western or white, they come from Asia, Latin and
Caribbean. First time United States has seriously illegal immigrants. There are
many question were put, what the impact will be on society? Can American
expand enough to offer for them? The traditional values will be changeable?
Etc. But one thing cannot deny is that immigrants had greatly contributed to all
aspect of American society. They created the unique characteristic in USA:
multi-ethnic. We can call USA as the first universal nation, in which can be
viewed as a mosaic- picture made up of many tiny pieces with different colours.
However, due to unpredictable elements at present, especially threat of terrorist.
