VIII. Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D. (1.0pt - 0.2pt / each)
During the teenage years, many young people can at times be difficult to talk to. They often
seem to dislike being questioned. They may seem unwilling to talk about their work in school.
This is a normal development at this age, though it can be very hard for parents to understand. It is
a part of becoming independent of teenagers trying to be adult while they are still growing up.
Young people are usually more willing to talk if they believe that questions are asked out of real
interest or not because people are trying to check up on them.
Parents should do their best to talk to their sons and daughters about school work and future
plan but should not push them to talk if they don’t want to. Parents should also watch for the
dangerous signs: some young people in trying to be adult may experiment with sex, drugs,
alcohol, or smoking. Parents need to watch for any signs of unusual behavior which may be
connected with these and get help if necessary.
44. This passage is taken from a _______________________________.
A. handbook for parents
B. school timetable
C. teenage magazine
D. book for children
45. Why do adults sometimes find teenagers difficult to talk to?
A. Because most teenagers are quiet.
B. Because teenagers don’t want to talk to other people.
C. Because teenagers think adults are not honest.
D. Because most teenagers hate adults.
46. When can you expect young people to be more talkative than usual?
A. When people talk to them, they are really interested and not just checking on them.
B. When adults give them a lot of money to spend.
C. When adults talk to them about something different from their work at school.
D. When adults talk to them about sex, alcohol and drugs.
47. Some teenagers experiment with drinking or smoking because ______________.

The sea has been rising relative to the land for at least 100 years, geologists say. During that
same period, the Atlantic Coast has eroded an average of two to three feet per year, the Gulf
Coast even faster. Many engineers maintain that seawalls and replenished beaches are necessary
to protect the nation’s shoreline. Too many people live or vacation in Miami Beach, Atlantic City,
or Martha’s Vineyard to allow their roads and buildings to simply fall into the sea.
The problem with seawalls is that they simply don’t work. One study has shown that,
in fact, seawalls make beaches erode faster.
Faced with the loss of their beaches, other communities have tried a simple but
expensive solution: replace the lost sand. These replenishment programs, however, are
costly and of dubious value. Another study has shown that only ten percent of replenished
beaches lasted more than 5 years.

VIII. Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D. (1 pt – 0.2 pt/each)
Up to about 1915, movies were short and programs were made up of several things. Then, D.W.
Griffith and others began making longer films which provided the same powerful emotional appeal as
did melodrama and presented spectacles far beyond what the theater could offer. Consequently, after
World War I increasing numbers of spectators deserted the theater for the movies.
This trend was accelerated in the late 1920’s as a result of two new elements. In 1927 sound
was added to the previously silent film, and thus one of the theater’s principal claims to superiority
vanished. In 1929 a serious economic depression began. Since audiences could go to the movies
for a fraction of what it cost to see a play, theater-going became a luxury which few could afford,
especially as the depression deepened.
By the end of World War II, the American theater had been reduced to about thirty theaters
in New York City and a small number of touring companies originating there.

3. One thing that made people choose the movies over the theater was ___________________.
A. World War I
B. the fact that films were less expensive
C. the fact that films were silent
D. the fact that films were shorter
4. By the end of World War II, __________________________________________________.
A. theater had become entertainment for the mass
B. the theater was no longer considered a luxury
C. professional theatrical performances were confined mainly to New York City
D. there were no theatrical performances outside of New York City
5. When the author of the paragraph says, “This trend was accelerated in the late 1920’s” he
means that ____________________________________________________________________.
A. many more people went to the theater than to the movies
B. the shift away from the theater to the movies was speeded up
C. the popularity of the theater was gradually increasing
D. the shift away from the movies to the theater was slowed down

A recent investigation by scientists at the U.S Geological Survey shows that strange animal
behavior might help predict future earthquakes. Investigators found such occurrences about
ten kilometers from where a fairly recent earthquake took place. Some birds made strange
sounds and flew about wildly, dogs barked and ran around uncontrollably.
Scientists believe that animals can sense these environmental changes as early as several days
before the disaster. In 1976 after observing animal behavior, the Chinese scientists were able
to predict a terrifying earthquake. Although hundreds of thousands of people were killed, the
government was able to evacuate millions of other people and thus keep the death toll at a
lower level.

People can depend on strange animal behavior to predict coming earthquakes.
Millions of people in China died from the earthquake in 1976.

earthquakes can save lots of people from being killed.
