PROJECT GUIDE
IE1 LISTENING AND SPEAKING
MOVIE REVIEW
1. Instructions for the project
The project requires students to work in groups, watch and review a movie of their choice in order to
practice their listening and speaking skills as well as develop those of teamwork, analysis and
presentation. The product of the project is a group presentation about the movie. The basic requirements
for the project are listed below.

Students work in groups of 4 or 5 students.

Each group of students is required to watch a movie of their choice. The movie main language
must be in English. Its content should be appropriate and approved by the instructor. Students can
enable English subtitles if necessary.

Each group should inform the instructor about their movie title in Week 6. Half of the groups will
present their movies in Week 9 and the rest in Week 10.

The project is worth 10% of the course credits.

Failure to complete the project can result in students’ bad performance in the course.

2. Presentation requirements

The presentation should last about 15 minutes.

Each group member is required to participate in the process of preparation and presentation. The
assessment is not only on group performance but individual work as well.

The presentation should consist of the following parts:
 Background: brief information about when, where and how the movie was made and about
the director
 Characters: brief information about protagonists and antagonists as well as their
relationship
 Plot: summary of the story in the movie
 Awards/ Achievements/ Viewers’ feedback: brief information about awards, achievements or
viewers’ feedback on the movie
 Reflection: the group’s thoughts, feelings and/ or comments on the movie regarding the
plot, directing, acting, overall effectiveness, etc.
 The group’s favorite part: The group shows their favorite part, raises one or two questions
and leads the class discussion. (The discussion can also be led by the instructor.)

3. Timeline
Week 6:

The instructor introduces the project and guides the students to form groups.

Week 7:

The students inform the instructor about the movie titles.

Week 8:

The instructor informs the student about the approved titles and provides some
instruction regarding the presentation skills.

Week 9:

The first groups present the movies.

Week 10:

The last groups present the movies.

4. Assessment
The project is worth 10% of the course credits and graded on the scale of 100 points based on the
following criteria.
Attendance (20 points)
- All of the students must be present on presentation days.
- All of the group members must participate in the preparation and presentation.

Organization (20 points)
- The organization should be organized logically in order that it is easy for the audience to follow.
- Students should introduce their team and the agenda they will follow. Tasks should be assigned
reasonably among the group members. Handouts can be used if necessary.
Content (40 points)
- The content is advised to include the recommended parts in presentation requirements. Students
may have their own adjustments so that the movie is reviewed thoroughly and effectively.
Presentation skills (20 points)
- Students should have an appropriate style of presentation. They should have clear voice, steady
rate of speaking, good posture and eye contact.
- Students should not read (e.g. note cards, handouts or slides).
- Students should engage or attract the audience to their presentation.
