III. Reading
A. Read the passage then choose the best answer: (1.25pts)
Music influences people in different ways or the same person differently at different times. Music may
seem to influence people differently. That is because people can react differently to the music. We are able to
apply a choosing process to the music we hear. If someone hates jazz, then a jazz piece with a positive effect will
probably not make him feel good. A happy song might appear to make an angry person angrier, yet it is not the

music itself that is creating the anger; rather it is the positive effect of the music. The angry person does not want
to accept the song's happy feeling: it points out his already existing anger, and makes that anger come to the
surface. When a piece of music is played and we are listening to it, our body, mind, and feelings are being
affected. The musicians of ancient cultures such as China, India, Turkey and Greece understood the effects of
music. In fact, Pathagoras, in ancient Greece, introduced a whole science that concerned them. Because the
musicians of these ancient cultures understood these effects, they created music that was positive, uplifting, and
beneficial. Once the effects of music are better understood, the next step is to gain a better understanding of the
music around us, and what effect it is actually having.

The climate in Bach Ma National Park is tropical with two distinctive seasons caused by the
monsoon winds. The weather conditions in the park area can change very quickly. In the morning, it is
sunny but it may be cloudy with heavy rain in the afternoon. Because of the proximity of the sea there
are often strong winds. Admittedly, the park supports a very large number of plant and animal species.
This is partly due to the variations in altitude and also because the park is located within the transition
area of two bio-geographical zones containing species from northern and southern Vietnam. The

vegetation includes two main formations: tropical lowland forest below 900 m and sub-tropical forest
between 900 and 1450 m – the latter being the richest and less disturbed by human influence. The flora
of Bach Ma includes at least 1,400 species which represent around one-fifth of the entire flora of
Vietnam. The fauna is considered to contain half of all mammals known in Vietnam. 43 species of
mammals have been identified in the park and further 76 species have been listed as potentially present,
considering their overall range of distribution. Nine species of primates have been confirmed in Bach
Ma. 330 species of birds that have been observed in the park represent over one-third of the species
found in Vietnam.

fish. Thus, the whale has adapted to marine life. Nevertheless, though the whale resembles the
fish externally, it still has the characteristics of a mammal.
One important difference between the whale and a fish is that the baby whale is born alive. It is
not hatched from an egg. Furthermore, the baby whale is fed on its mother’s milk just like other
