samewaythatGooglesearchestheWeb,andyoucanevensee

HowGoogleWorks
BeforeyoucanunderstandhowGoogleworks,youprobably
shouldhaveabasicideaofhowtheWebworks.Whenyouvisit
awebsite,yourbrowserisactuallycontactingawebserver,a
computerwhosejobistodeliverwebpages.Sowhenyouclick
alink,yourbrowsercontactstheserverandsays,"Sendme
thispage."Theservertakestherequestandthensendsthe
pagetothebrowser,whichdisplaysitonyourcomputer.

AqueryengineThisiswhattakesyoursearchrequest,
sendsittotheindexer,andreportstheresultstoyou.

TheSpider
ThespiderpartoftheGooglesearchengineisanautomated
pieceofsoftware,alsocalledarobot,thatrequestsmany
thousandsofpagesfromhundredsofwebsitessimultaneously.
Whenitfindslinksonpages,itfollowsthose,andrequests
thoseaswell.
ThemainGooglespideristheGoogleBot,anditessentially

Thespiderssendinformationaboutallthepagestheyfindto

pagesenttoitbytheGooglespider.Notonlydoesitindex

everywordandeveryURL,italsokeepsarecordofwhere
everywordisoneverypage.


MultiplecopiesofthisindexarekeptonvariousGoogleservers.
Asingleserverwouldn'tbeabletokeepupwithallthesearch
requeststhataredone.

TheQueryEngine
TheonlypartofGooglethatyouseeisthequeryengine,and
youonlyseepartofthat.It'sthepublicfaceofGooglethat
invitingsearchboxatthetopofGooglepages.
Whenyoutypeasearchterm,aGooglewebserversendsyour
requesttotheindexer,whichishousedonmultipleindexing
servers.Theindexserverslookthroughtheindexandmatch
whattheyfindwithyourrequest.Theindexserverthensends
thatinformationtodocumentservers,whichretrievethecorrect
informationandformatitsoyourbrowsercanunderstandit.
Thatformattedinformationisthensenttoyourbrowser.
Anditallhappensinafractionofasecond.

Google'sSpecialSauce
Allthissearchenginelogicisnothingneworrevolutionary.This
technologyhasbeenaroundforyears,longbeforeGooglewas
aglimmerinitsfounders'eyes.
SowhyisGooglesogoodatwhatitdoes?
Googleusesbetteralgorithmsthananyothersearchengine,
andconstantlyrefinesthem.Algorithmsaresetsofrulesfor
performingaparticulartask.InGoogle'scase,itsalgorithms
areresponsiblefortakingyoursearchrequestanddeciding

whichresultstoshowyou.

AlgorithmAsetofrulesforperformingatask.In
Google'scase,algorithmsarewhatdetermines
whichpagesitsaysmatchyoursearchrequests.

Google'salgorithmsaren'tparticularlyeasyformeremortalsto
understand,they'rechangingallthetime,andthey'renotmade
public.Googleusesmorethan100factorsinitsalgorithms.For
everysearchyoudo,itconsidersallofthosefactorsandthen
calculatesascoreforeverypossiblematchingpage.Thepage

Someofthemetricsarefairlyobviousthesearchtermneedsto
appearonapage,forexample.Google'salgorithmsalsofactor
inthenumberoftimesthetermappearsonapage,whether
thetermappearsonaprominentpartofapage,whetherit
appearsinthetitleofapage,andmanyotherfactors.
Noneofthisisparticularlyrevolutionary,either.Manysearch
enginesdothesamething.
Google'srealbrillianceisinharnessingthecollective
intelligenceoftheWebtofigureoutwhatwastrulyrelevant,
insteadofmerelyrelyingonthesekindsofrules.Googlealso
givesagreatdealofweighttothenumberandkindsofpages
thatlinktoawebpage.Forexample,Googlefiguresthatifa
webpagehasmanysiteslinkingtoit,theoddsareverygood
thatthepageisanimportantone.Andifimportantsitesare

linkingtothatpage,it'sevenmoreimportant.
SoGooglecalculatesapagerankforeachpage,andthatpage
rankbecomesaveryimportantpartofthecalculationaswell.
Forexample,youdoasearch,andGooglefindsyoursearch
termfivetimesonapagetowhichhardlyanypageslink,but


threetimesonapage(suchasontheNewYorkTimeswebsite)
thathasmanysiteslinkingtoit.Themoreimportantpage(the
NewYorkTimespage)appearshigheronthesearchresultslist,
eventhoughthesearchtermappearsonitlessfrequently.




WhyUseGoogleTools?
Google,asmentionedpreviously,ismorethanasearchengine.
Itprovidesawholecomplexofsitesandservicesthatthisbook
referstoasGoogletools.Thesetoolsincludethingssuchas
Gmailwebservice,GoogleLocal(previouslycalledGoogle
Maps)searchservice,andGoogleDesktopforsearchingyour
computer.
Googleissuchagreatsearchsite,butwhybotherusingGoogle
tools?Thesetoolsareinmanywaysasremarkableasthe
Googlesearchengineitself.Someofthesetoolsarespecialized
versionsofthesearchengine.Forexample,Froogleisthe
Googleserviceforfindingonlinebargains,andGoogleNewsis
theservicethatdeliversthelatestnews.
OthertoolsareextensionsofGoogle.TheGoogleDesktop
extendsGoogle'spowertoyourPC,forexample.Andthe

GoogleToolbarenablesyoutosearchGooglenomatterwhere
youareontheWeb.
StillothertoolsaregreatservicesfortheInternet,suchas
Blogger,whichenablesyoutocreateyourownblogs;Gmail,
itsemailservice;orGoogleTalk,whichenablesyoutochat
withfriends.
Soifyou'reaGoogleuserandhaven'tusedanyofitstools,this
