Function
• Wh- questions ask for information. They cannot be answered with a yes or no.
Singular and Plural
•
Use is for singular subjects and are for plural subjects.
• Who asks about people.
• Who are you?
• Who is your leader?
• What asks about things.
• What is your language?
• What are your names?
• Where asks about places.

• Where is your spaceship?
• Where are we?
Why asks for a reason.
• Why are you here?
• Why are their heads so small?

Contractions

We often use contractions for wh- questions with is in speaking and informal writing.

We usually give short answers to wh-questions. We can give long answers too.

2) Sentences without auxiliary verbs.
-Change the main verb to its Base form.
-Sentences without an auxiliary verb need to have a form of the verb “do” inserted.
-Place the wh word in the initial position

-when the subject of the sentence is not known, there is no inversion.
-Just add the wh word to take the place of the unknown subject

With HOW there are a number of other expressions that are used in questions:

How much – refers to a quantity or a price (uncountable nouns).

• How much time do you have to finish the test?
